El33tonline Question of the Day

There’s been a lot of moaning and grousing following the release of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 and Battlefield 3 about how gamers are now being inundated with titles in the ‘modern military shooter’ genre, and how the action category of games now needs a change after following this trend for too long.

Sound familiar? This was the same sentiment expressed when World War II shooters were all the rage - gamers had grown tired of them, and with the release of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare, we got the change we wanted.

The military shooter isn’t the only popular gaming trend that some would rather see go away, so this Question of the Day asks:

What popular game trends do you want to end?

Electronic Arts LogoEvery year (and every few months), EA shuts down online server support for a selection (and in same cases, an entire crop) of its games to make way for the support of future online-enabled titles, ostensibly to provide better features and support for the new blood.

Last year, the biggest shock was the discontinuation of server support for EA’s Lord of the Rings: Battle for Middle-earth strategy games, and this year the list of games set to be without official features includes games from the Battlefield, Need For Speed and Tiger Woods franchises, amongst others.

Here’s the message and new list of games from EA:

Medal of Honor Xbox 360 Box Art EA has proudly announced that the publisher’s latest first-person shooter, Medal of Honor, has gone on to sell over an impressive 1.5 million copies during its first five days on sale around the world, now having exceeded day one sales forecasts in North America and easily snatching the No. 1 spot on the UK’s weekly software sales chart.

In addition, EA CEO John Riccitiello mentioned during a television appearance (in a FOX Business TV segment) that Medal of Honor has so far generated $100 million.

If that wasn’t exciting enough, EA has announced that a set of ‘free’ downloadable content for Medal of Honor will release in early November.

Let’s talk about the future of videogames, you and I.

Let’s speak about a time when blockbuster, triple-A titles across a single genre of game are all indistinguishable, save for their stories. Let’s ruminate on the possibility that these games will take very little risks, gameplay-wise, but deliver a fantastic film-quality narrative over six hours of entertainment. Let’s whisper quietly about a future where gamers purchase one title over the other because of that narrative and the game’s setting, rather than the promise of some great new videogame technology or gimmick.

And just for one second, let’s compare videogames and movies, and suggest that, in the future, audiences will flock to one videogame over the other (despite their similarities) simply because, in one, the special effects are better and the explosions are bigger - much like the pattern of results shown at the close of a Hollywood box-office weekend.

My friends, the future is now.
