It wasn’t long ago that BioWare writer Daniel Erickson went out on a limb to insult Final Fantasy XIII, saying it had no right to call itself a RPG. Ironically, another BioWare employee - Mass Effect 3’s art director Derek Watts - has recently admitted that the sci-fi series owes a lot to the 2001 CG film Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within.

In the latest issue of Xbox World 360 magazine Watts is quoted as saying:

The Waiting Game - Demon's Souls BadgeThere comes a moment in every gamer’s life when we sit back with satisfaction as the credits roll and think to ourselves: “That’s got to be one of the best games I’ve ever played.”

Unfortunately, just like you eventually get hungry after digging in at an all-you-can-eat buffet, that sense of satisfaction fades with time and an appetite for more gaming goodness gradually takes shape in your belly. The one thing that can get your adrenaline pumping and intensify that hunger is the announcement of a sequel or addition to this game series you’ve irrevocably pledged yourself to.

Think about how ecstatic Call of Duty fans get when a new game in the series is announced - they know it’s coming (one a year without exception it would seem) but that inevitability doesn’t seem to dampen their enthusiasm one iota.

I recently experienced this ‘hunger’ after completing Demon’s Souls for the second time. Although I have encountered people online (a PSN friend from Singapore springs to mind) who get endless hours of entertainment from this title’s cooperative and Player VS Player (PvP) features, I found myself craving new worlds to explore and new behemoths to take down (with a little help from fellow demon hunters of course).

The 28th annual Golden Joystick Awards took place today, an awards event that invites the gaming public to vote on their favourite games in order to recognise the year’s best titles.

28th Annual Golden Joystick Awards Logo1 543 309 votes came in this year and determined that Mass Effect 2 was the ‘Ultimate Game of the Year,’ as well as ‘RPG of the Year,’ while Assassin’s Creed II, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 and Plants VS Zombies also got a nod apiece.

2010’s edition of the Golden Joystick Awards included games released from August 2009 until August 2010, and the winners this year were:

With the release of EA and Bioware’s epic space opera RPG earlier this year in Mass Effect 2, the companies decided it would be best to add an extra incentive for gamers to purchase an original copy of the game by incorporating the ‘Cerberus Network’ into the online interaction portion of the title, meaning that if you wanted access to exclusive new downloadable content (DLC), you would have to go through this distribution network to get it with a one-time-use code included with the game.

In an interview with Joystiq, executive producer on Bioware’s Dragon Age 2, Mark Darrah, has confirmed that the developer’s next epic fantasy RPG will include a similar network for distribution of exclusive DLC:

EA announced today at GamesCom that Mass Effect 2 will be coming to the PS3 in January 2011. According to EA, the PlayStation 3 edition will include the full game with hours of bonus content.

EA have not indicated whether Mass Effect, the first game in the franchise, will be ported to PlayStation 3, so how Bioware intend to solve the problem of players not having played the original Mass Effect (this was designed as a trilogy, with continuing story, remember) has not been indicated, but EA assure us that the PS3 version of Mass Effect 2 will be the “perfect introduction” to the franchise.

Mass Effect 2 was originally released on Xbox 360 and the PC in January 2010.
