Major Nelson recently updated the ‘ole blog to announce that the second annual ‘Summer of Arcade’ on Xbox LIVE Arcade will be kicking off in just under two weeks time, on Wednesday July 22nd.
Last year’s ‘event’ saw a flurry of excellent releases on Xbox LIVE Arcade, including Geometry Wars: Retro Evolved 2, Braid, Bionic Commando Rearmed, Galaga Legions and Castle Crashers, all releasing within a month of one another.
Can the Xbox LIVE Summer of Arcade 2009 hope to compare to last year’s effort?
In an update on their Twitter account, Capcom have announced that Marvel VS Capcom 2, a port of the classic 2D fighter by the same name, will be releasing on Xbox LIVE Arcade on July 29th (a Wednesday, naturally) for 1200 MS Points.
An official date for release on the PlayStation Store is said to be coming soon, but logically should appear the following day (a Thursday) as PlayStation Store content usually does. Don’t hold your breath though.
Thought to be releasing today after a reveal via Marvel Entertainment’s quarter one financial report, it’s now been confirmed that today is indeed not the day that Marvel VS Capcom 2 releases, although a few new screenshots have been released in its stead.
The much admired 2D fighter, featuring characters from the lineage of Capcom games, as well as fan-favourites from the Marvel universe, is set to release on Xbox LIVE Arcade and the PlayStation Network around the end of July, give or take, according to a Twitter tweet by Capcom by Capcom:
“MvC2 is not actually coming out on June 29, sorry guys. Not sure where that rumor came from, but it’s going to be closer to the end of July.”
In the meantime, though, you may as well enjoy some new screenshots from the game, below:

That’s right 2D fighter fans, Capcom have announced an online-enabled, screen-filter featuring version of Marvel VS Capcom 2, heading to Xbox LIVE Arcade and the PlayStation Store this Summer for 1200 MS Points and $15 respectively.
This version of Marvel VS Capcom 2 will include the option of turning on a ‘screen filter’ effect that supposedly smoothens out the frames of animation to make them look more crisp and high-definition looking, although the team didn’t redraw any of the art.
