The latest Media Create software chart covers the public holiday studded Golden Week period - a time for Japanese residents to go on vacation or relax at home. This week’s chart doesn’t have any new entries but makes for fascinating viewing nevertheless. The composition of the top ten is simply incredible - seven Nintendo published titles, four Mario games, and six 3DS titles. Clearly Nintendo came, saw and conquered during Golden Week!
The gap between Mario Party 8 and Mario Party 9 must be the longest in the series history, and it was certainly needed because the franchise was becoming stale, with each new release feeling the same as the last despite attempts to use new input mechanisms. Mario Party 9 is a bit of a departure from previous entries in terms of base game mechanics but retains a variety of mini-games at its core, so if you’re in the mood for four-player mini-games with a some waiting around in between, then this game is for you.

EA’s FIFA Street took the number one spot on the UK Software Chart this past week, driving last week’s winner, Mass Effect 3, into second place (sales down 74%). It’s been just over four years since the last FIFA Street, but this reboot has outperformed all the other FIFA Street’s opening week’s sales.
As expected, Mass Effect 3 has trumped all to become the top-selling game in the UK this past week, taking on heavyweights like SSX, FIFA 12, Mario Party 9 and newcomer Street Fighter X Tekken.
EA’s latest action snowboarding game makes an effortless move to the top of Chart Track’s UK Software Sales listing this week after a hiatus of over five years and a debut appearance on the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3.
Even in this day and age of internet scoops, Nintendo managed to surprise us with a few announcements at the publisher’s E3 press conference this year.
At the top of the list was the Wii U, Nintendo’s next home console and the successor to the Wii. The tablet-like controller for the Wii U has a touchscreen, dual analogue circle pads, motion controls, speakers, a microphone and a camera. The controller screen can be used instead of or along with HDTV.
One of the surprise announcements to come out of E3 this week was Mario Party 9.
However, even though the publisher managed to surprise us with the reveal, it’s no real surprise that they’ve started development on a sequel to Mario Party 8, which became the fastest selling title in the popular Mario Party series.
