At the top of the list was the Wii U, Nintendo’s next home console and the successor to the Wii. The tablet-like controller for the Wii U has a touchscreen, dual analogue circle pads, motion controls, speakers, a microphone and a camera. No time to explain! Too many screenshots!

OK, I’ll explain a little bit!

In order to better plump up the release schedule for Nintendo’s 3DS handheld, the company is currently working on a few titles that long-time fans of Nintendo may get a little excited about.

We’re talking about re-releases of classic titles such as The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of time, Starfox 64, and what looks like a hybrid between Mario Kart 64 and Mario Kart Wii (also known as Mario Kart DS).

Currently, these games exist as technology demos for the 3DS’s stereoscopic 3D ability, but represent games that Nintendo will in fact release at some point in the future.

Have a look at some released screenshots for these games below:

RC Mario Kart - MarioHow much do you love Mario Kart? Enough to buy a set of remote controlled karts and race them around your living room?

Dang, you don’t need to be a Mario Kart fan to do that!

It does help, though, that the theme of these particular remote controlled karts is ‘Mario Kart,’ because one of their greatest features would otherwise not have been included – working power-ups.

Developers at Bizarre Creations have stated on numerous occasions that they don’t mind that their latest action racing game, Blur, is being compared to Nintendo’s power-up infused Mario Kart series of racing games. They’re even honoured that Blur can measure up to such a distinguished and long-running franchise.

It seems as though Blur’s marketing team has other ideas.

While this latest trailer for Blur is rather funny, it’s always a little worrying when one game needs to belittle another ‘competing’ game to get ahead. Can’t Blur stand on its own features?

It’s all fun and games until someone gets hurt:

A Frenchman by the name Remi Gaillard has gone and done what a lot of Mario Kart fans probably wish they could do - race a Mario kart in real life. Gaillard takes to the streets with his customised racer, picking up power-ups and throwing banana peels at cars. His little speedster is surprisingly zippy…

If you need a bit of a smile today, watch this video for a good laugh, but keep watching for the awesome end event:

Have you heard the Mario Kart love song yet? It’s quite simple really, a song about Mario Kart and love, but singer Mark’s simple lyrics (“You be my princess, I’ll be your toad”) promise to make even the most hardened Mario Kart fan blush slightly.

I had the pleasure of spending my Friday evening at Spur endeavoring to outwit, outplay and outlast my fellow gamers over dinner.

Yes, ladies and gentlemen we took our DS’s out into public and unsheathed them in plain view of the general public. We had Phat ones, finger printed Lite ones, pinks, whites and blacks too. It was a scandal second to none and naturally this exhibition did not go unnoticed. Waiters and patrons alike stopped dead in their tracks to ogle and quiz us on their way to the salad bar.

The amount of interest generated by the nine of us playing Mario Kart whilst chowing down between races was quite phenomenal. The men were naturally polite and let us get on with our “hardcore” gaming session however the ladies were darn outspoken. What is it that you are doing? Are you all playing the same game? Fortunately I was more than happy to share the joys of the Nintendo DS to them. In summary it went like this…”It is called a DS Lite which just launched in South Africa! Lots of fun with games for kids and adults.” I am not sure they believed the adults part and I didn’t have time to share the joys of Brain Age or Nintendogs.
