The NPD Group has released its sales report of the videogame industry in the US for the month of September, sadly the first of its kind to not include exact unit sales.

NPD no longer reports the unit sales figures for the Top 5, neither does the Top 10 show a single title on a single platform but rather the combined sales of an individual title across all platforms.

Just like a winding, downward-spiralling life of crime, 2K Games just keeps trying to pull you back into Mafia II with offers of downloadable content (DLC), this time flashing four packs of the stuff from beneath its collective overcoat.

Like an addict, we can’t help but feel tempted.

Halo: Reach Logo 2

Last week, September 14th, Microsoft’s Halo: Reach released in the UK (and around the world) and effortlessly provided the company with its biggest ever launch week in the region, and added up to the 5th biggest launch in the UK ever.

The only games that stood in the way of Halo: Reach’s ability to become the number one biggest launch are Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 (both the Xbox 360 and PS3 versions), GTA: San Andreas (PS2) and GTA IV (Xbox 360).

Following on from the previous set of downloadable content (DLC) for Mafia II, 2K Games has announced that a new story-based adventure for the mobster-themed game will be released later this year for Xbox 360, PS3 and PC.

Somewhat lamely called “Joe’s Adventures,” this DLC will follow the adventures of Joe Barbaro, childhood best-friend of the game’s main protagonist, Vito Scaletta.

Despite a 58% drop in sales compared to the week previous, 2K’s mobster-themed action game Mafia II has managed to remain at the top of Chart Track’s UK Software Sales listing for the third week in a row, fending off advances from Ubisoft’s HAWX 2, as well as a host of new releases.

[Update] You can find an extended list of best-selling software, which includes the top twenty selling titles for the month of August, over here. [End of Update]

Xbox 360 PartyThe NPD Group has released the latest round of sales figures for the videogame industry in the US for the month of August 2010, and unfortunately the research and sales tracking firm doesn’t have especially good news for us number nuts, announcing that industry revenue in the region dropped by ten percent compared to August 2009.

Overall sales in the industry stood at $818.9 million for August, down $91.4 million from the same period last year. Year-to-date, industry revenue accumulated during 2010 is roughly $720 million behind 2009 during the same timeframe - from January to August 2010, the industry has generated $8.37 billion.

The world of Mafia II is one of incredible detail, and attention to detail. The city of Empire Bay that plays host to your anti-social adventures is crammed with fine touches, like smoke billowing out of street vents and eye-catching lighting and colour, as well as overarching and complicated designs, like winding suburban paths, sprawling city streets, and filthy scrapyards.

Empire Bay is an enormous place, bustling with activity. The rush of 1940’s style cars over the roads and the movement of inhabitants across pavements combined with a cacophony of city sounds makes for a real ‘living, breathing’ city. If you want to get away from the hustle, take a trip into the greenery of the hills at night and spy vast vistas below you, with a constellation of towering skyscrapers and simple homes spilling into the starlit sky above.

Arriving back into Empire Bay at dawn via one of the immense, yawning bridges changes the complexion of the city again as the sun creeps over the brick and concrete of the world, stretching rays of light over the landscape ahead to transform buildings into intimidating silhouettes that sit imposingly in front of you, all set against an inviting pale orange sky – quite a contrast!

With all of the razzle-dazzle detail, visual excess and expansive scenery, however, Mafia II simply doesn’t deliver a game equal to its presentation, and instead contents itself with stringing players along on a linear story-based crime caper that, although delivered extremely well, requires far too much unnecessary and stringent work on the part of the player to fully enjoy.
