Yesterday, SEGA and Platinum Games officially announced the pair’s next collaboration in the form of the intriguing multiplayer brawling game, Anarchy Reigns, with a couple screenshots and details to go along with the unveiling.
To keep those levels of intrigue high, a teaser trailer for Anarchy Reigns has just been released featuring focussed looks at three of the included characters, one of which is Jack from Platinum Games’ Wii-exclusive (and very gory) MadWorld.
The teasing begins:
News from Japanese game magazine Famitsu has revealed that Platinum Games (Bayonetta, Vanquish) is currently working on a new title for both Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 entitled ‘Max Anarchy.’
Rather than focussing on a single protagonist as in their previous titles, this game will feature an online mode with support for a “large number” of players, according to Platinum Games’ Atsushi Inaba.
Platinum Games’ (MadWorld, Bayonetta) new game was recently revealed, and by the looks of the CG (but imbued with live-action) trailer, this new title is going to once again take on the third-person action genre with all guns blazing… literally.
Entitled Vanquish, the story for the game is kicked off by an attack on the United States by an unknown enemy (could be aliens, could be human terrorists), and you are sent into battle as a suited up warrior of possibly ‘one-man-army’ proportions.
Other than these few details, nothing else is known about Vanquish, other than the fact that Resident Evil creator Shinji Mikami and Okami producer Atsushi Inaba are involved in the project.
You can watch the intriguing, excellently produced trailer for Vanquish below:
Platinum Games, creators of MadWorld and Bayonetta, and comprising former Capcom luminaries, has posted up a countdown clock that is equal parts groovy and confusing.
The page contains visuals that would remind one of a New Year’s party in the 70’s, with all kinds of garish colours and shapes spinning and swirling around, occasionally forming shapes.
In the centre of the nausea-inducing movement is a countdown clock, presumably made up of split-seconds, ‘rapidly’ falling to zero.
Check it out for yourself over here, and if you have a clue as to what it could all be about, be sure to comment below – I’d love to know!
After taking a bit of a gamble on publishing mature titles such as The Conduit and MadWorld on the Wii, and seeing poor sales of those titles as a result of the seemingly impenetrable and unpredictable market surrounding the console, SEGA has decided not to pursue the development of any further non family-friendly titles for the Wii.
According to SEGA of America’s studio director, Constantine Hantzopoulos, and once again speaking to the guys of the ‘4 Guys 1Up’ podcast, the publisher will “probably not” develop or publish any more mature Wii titles. Hantzopoulos said:
There is always much discussion about how there aren’t any ‘serious’, or ‘mature’ games on the Wii. If MadWorld is such a game then I can do without them on the console. It was certainly touted as a game aimed at an audience who thinks of themselves as ‘serious, mature gamers,’ a real oxymoronic statement. Sega seems to think that said gamers want violence in the place of good, varied gameplay because the one thing MadWorld has in excess is violence. I would argue that they want violence and good gameplay – one out of two doesn’t cut it unless you are thoroughly entertained by mindless violence. For my part, I could also do with just one out of the two, as long as that one is gameplay.

Platinum Games’ ultra-violent black-and-white Wii brawler, MadWorld, was released in the US last week, so what tips and tricks do the creators of the game have for gamers?
SEGA’s senior localisation producer, Patrick Riley, told MTV Multiplayer Blog the top ten things all players of MadWorld should do once they find themselves in the throes of the game. Here’s one of the suggestions:
“No. 4. If the bat is available in the level, save it for the boss fight.”
Short and sweet, although gamers in Europe will have to wait until March 27th to try that one out and see if it’s a useful piece of advice.
Read the rest of the top ten things to do in MadWorld below:
SEGA and Platinum Games have been releasing a series of promotional videos for MadWorld, their upcoming ultra-violent brawler, featuring two sportscasters commenting on what’s currently going down in the world of MadWorld.
Here is the third episode in the series, called Death Watch, which contains the same dryly-delivered remarks and observations as the first two episodes, making for some good comical relief:
MadWorld releases on Wii in the US on March 10th and the UK and Europe on March 20th.
While the US got a confirmed released date for MadWorld some time ago, the UK has had to wait a bit for news.
MadWorld, Platinum Games’s ultra-violent brawler on the Wii, is definitely being created for a hardcore audience, something that producer Atsushi Inaba is hoping people will realise:
“The first main concept was to make a fun game. We wanted to make a game with impact, action and entertainment and also a game that is very different from the existing games on the console.
“In terms of the violence, we expected to have some criticism. But at the end of the day we are creating a game that is suitable only for a mature audience. Some people may take offence but you just can’t please everyone. I hope that gamers will appreciate the game as a form of entertainment and not focus on the irreverent violent content.
“The Wii is the most popular console in the world but there are not many games tailored to adult gamers, so we thought we’d be able to give this audience something the console has been missing.”
MadWorld releases in the UK on March 20th (a month from today). Catch a glimpse of what the game’s about with this uncensored trailer.
With the announcement of a US release date for MadWorld came a great little bit of media called MadWorld Death Watch, which featured two ‘sportscasters’ giving viewers play-by-play (and colour) commentary on events happening in the latest round of MadWorld.
Here is episode 2 of the Death Watch trailers, with similarly humorous comments, jabs and insults.
MadWorld, an ultra-violent, black and white romp through a crime-ridden city for the Wii, releases in the US on March 10th, while it is expected to release in the UK and Europe later that month.
Platinum Games’s upcoming ultra-violent brawler for the Wii, MadWorld, has been given a March 10th release date in the US, while the UK and European release date still sits at a nebulous window of ‘March.’
Go celebrate the announcement of the release date by watching the latest trailer to be released for MadWorld, which sees the on-screen actions getting play-by-play and colour commentary, in what amounts to a pretty hilarious video.

In the extremely violent universe of MadWorld (which is vaguely reminiscent of RoboCop, for some reason), only Jack can rescue the city from the consequences of a $100 million ‘game of death’ that has engulfed residents in its vicious claws. Dramatic, but true.
The trailer below (hilariously titled a ‘holiday’ trailer) shows the current situation in the city, as the protagonist, Jack, comes to the rescue. Gallons of blood and gibs ensues. Watch only if you are strong of heart and sturdy of bowels.
From screenshots and videos of MadWorld, we can determine that it will be one of the most violent games ever released, and certainly the most gruesome on the Wii, its exclusive platform. Now, following controversy over the violence, Sega has announced that they are actively working with the ratings boards to ensure MadWorld will get the appropriate rating on its release.
A marketing representative for Sega, David Corless said: “Yes, it’s violent. We don’t try to hide that, but as publishers, we see it as a fantasy game - it’s fantasy violence. It’s over the top. It’s cartoony. We also take the violence very seriously. We are working with the age rating boards, with PEGI and with BBFC. We’re not at the end of the game’s development, but we’re working with them now to make sure that we don’t go over the top.”
While Sega are publishing the game in development at Platinum Games, they also worked with the ratings boards on another of their published games, Condemned 2, and that turned out pretty grisly. Nothing to worry about, then?
Despite Sega announcing House of the Dead: Overkill yesterday at Leipzig, the game will not see a release in Germany. Shortly after revealing the new game, Sega delivered a brief press release stating that The House of the Dead: Overkill and Madworld (both Wii exclusive titles, published by Sega) would not be released in Germany.
This is not the first setback that has plagued Madworld. Mediawatch-UK has already called for the title to be banned in the UK, alleging that it will spoil the family fun image of the Wii.
Germany has strict censorship regulations and it seems that Sega has predicted that The House of the Dead: Overkill would be banned in any event. Sega Germany “deeply regrets this decision” but “based on the images shown so far, an ESRB release would be possible but very unlikely.”
It is doubtful that Sega will change the game play so the titles can be released in Germany. This is not the first title that German gamers will miss out on, Gears of War was also effectively banned in Germany in 2006. Microsoft did not release Gears of War in Germany after the game was refused a rating there.
Dead Rising suffered a similar fate in 2006. The game was denied a rating and since Microsoft does not allow unrated games to be published for the Xbox 360 in Germany, Dead Rising was effectively banned in Germany.

If you haven’t seen anything to do with the awesome Wii game MadWorld, coming from ex-Capcom group Platinum Games, then have gander:
How awesome! Some people, however, don’t share the enthusiasm the gaming world has shown for MadWorld. Mediawatch-UK, Britain’s longest running pressure group, campaign for decency in TV, films and games. According to them, MadWorld just isn’t decent, with John Beyer, the director of Mediawatch-UK saying, “I believe it will spoil the family fun image of the Wii.”
“I hope the British Board of Film Classification (BBFC) will view this with concern and decide it should not be granted a classification,” said Beyer. “Without that it cannot be marketed in Britain. What the rest of world does is up to them. We need to ensure that modern and civilized values take priority rather than killing and maiming people. It seems a shame that the game’s manufacturer have decided to exclusively release this game on the Wii.”
Essentially, Mediawatch-UK doesn’t want MadWorld to be released in the UK when it’s released worldwide early next year on the Wii.
