In general, the Fable series of action RPGs from developer Lionhead Studios and Microsoft have gone from strength to strength, each introducing key new elements that improve the new iteration over and above the previous one.
Fable III, while still wholly enjoyable and excellent overall, left a few critics cold and some gamers had more than a few complaints about how the developer handled the rush towards the end-game, while bugs shipping with the completed product (but then patched) mired the experience, too.
Lionhead’s Fable III launched itself into the big, big world of videogames at the end of October to a bit of a mixed reception. Some franchise fans were a tad disappointed with a few of the game’s nonsensical restrictions, while others (like El33tonline’s Oltman) thoroughly enjoyed it.
But most of all, players of Fable III discovered the game to be… kinda buggy, with tales of woe coming in from all corners of the gaming world speaking of game-stopping errors and other peculiarities. In an effort to fix some of these issues, Lionhead has recently deployed an update for Fable III, and perhaps silence some of the naysayers.
The full list of patch notes for Fable III follows below:
The new Understone Quest Pack for Fable III is now available on Xbox LIVE Marketplace for 400 MS Points.
You’ll be able to access three unique experiences with the add-on, including journeying through the mysterious Understone town. You’ll also be able to own new houses and stalls as well as conquer new creatures.
Now that Lionhead and Microsoft’s Fable III has been available in the wild for a suitable amount of time, it’s been announced that downloadable content (DLC) will soon become available for the epic action RPG.
Releasing next week, an add-on called the ‘Understone Quest Pack’ will hit Xbox LIVE Marketplace in an effort to provide players with even more adventures to overcome, while continuing to expand the sprawling land and lore of Albion.
From a post on Lionhead’s blog page:
“Tomorrow Fable III comes out in the USA, followed by Europe this coming Friday. Because we haven’t really spoken about LIVE Co-Op, we got Ted and Lewis in front of a camera last week to show off this new and exciting feature in Fable III…
“It’s not really a video diary because we didn’t have enough time to polish it, but hopefully it demonstrates Live Co-op well!”
Well, that takes care of my bit (except I should add that couch co-op is also confirmed in the video). Take it away, ‘not a video diary from Ted and Lewis’:
Microsoft has released the launch trailer for Lionhead’s upcoming action RPG, Fable III.
Watch the Revolution Launch Trailer below and look forward to Fable III releasing on the Xbox 360 on the 26th of October in the US, and the 29th of October across Europe, the UK and South Africa.
I’ve read and heard about Peter Molyneux’s effusive and legendary game demonstrations in the past, but even after watching and listening to these selfsame demonstrations with video and audio, I’ve only ever been half-way to appreciating what makes a ‘Molyneux Demo’ anything special.
But after recently receiving a behind-closed-doors gamescom presentation on Fable III from Peter Molyneux himself, I now fully appreciate what makes his demos so special and memborable: Even if it’s all according to script, and even if it’s artificial at some level, Molyneux speaks with a passion and sincerity that anyone in the games industry would do well to emulate, as he effortlessly enraptures listeners with infectious enthusiasm and a level of powerful, subdued energy that I’ve yet to experience in a developer demonstration.
Wow.
There have been some great opening cinematics for games over the years, and a lot of memorable efforts would come to mind if one were forced to write a list of favourites, but this intro video for Fable III is simply amazing.
It has a bit of a Pixar-style flair mixed with classic, distinct British animated humour, making for an absolutely fantastic, thrilling and inspiring beginning to what is sure to be one of the year’s best games.
Also: Watch out for the awesome ‘chicken kicker’ in-joke (I don’t condone the practice, but Fable players will know what I’m on about):
Dated for an October 26th release during Microsoft’s E3 press conference, Fable III looks set to contain an incredible fantasy world, carved, constructed and crafted by the folks at Lionhead to deliver an astoundingly epic RPG.
Imbued with the studio’s goal of creating a less intimidating game, but still include a rich set of interactions, Fable III is a game anyone even remotely interested in RPGs (and games that set you off on a grand adventure) will need to check out.

[Update] Have a look at the Xbox 360 Limited Collector’s Edition below. [End of Update]
In what industry watchers are calling the biggest ‘box art debacle’ of 2010, Microsoft and Lionhead have come out and confirmed that Fable III is indeed coming to the PC in addition to its release on Xbox 360.
If you love him, hate him, or you just think he’s OK, you can’t deny Peter Molyneux is a games industry legend, and most of the words that come out of his mouth are pure gold - inspiring, visionary, comedic or otherwise - and this new interview with the legend is no different. Take this quote for example:
“Fable III, what it’s really all about, it’s all about power, man!”
Molyneux then goes on to describe how Fable III allows you to feel incredibly powerful where other games may take that power and experience away from you (i.e. right at the end of the game), and how that power manifests itself not only in your battle abilities, but an on-the-fly judicial system as well.
Riveting stuff, no jokes! Molyneux’s enthusiasm for his game really comes across in the video interview below (aided, perhaps, by a pint or two…):
Game industry legend, Peter Molyneux, has been promoted within the ranks of Microsoft Game Studios (MGS), to creative director of European studios at MGS.
While Molyneux will continue to manage operations at his company, Lionhead, his duties have been extended to oversee projects at Rare and external projects, amongst others, and ensure better communication and understand within the group. Molyneux commented on his new responsibilities:
“What you’re not going to see is ten Peter Molyneux games. The value of this role is for someone like myself going in and making those little tiny lights of an idea shine as brightly as possible and ensuring everybody within the organisation clearly understands why we’re making those titles, the purpose of those titles and their importance to Microsoft overall.”
