(South African online retailer Kalahari.com recently held a midnight launch event to celebrate the release of the latest and greatest RPG from Blizzard, Diablo III.
The event took place at Gandalf’s in Observatory, Cape Town and Rashaad Abrahams was there for El33tonline to drink in the atmosphere and write about his experiences at the gathering.)
It was the evening of May 14th and I was walking down a street in Observatory. As the mist started rolling in, I could see a light at the end of the road - a bright yellow light that seemed like a glimmer of hope the night before the ‘Return of Evil’ was set to dawn upon us.
Fellow gamer Abz and I entered the abyss and as we heard some great music being played, we decided to stay a while and listen…
They may have begun in Australia, but the launch festivities for Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 still aren’t over as evidenced by images and news arriving from our gaming friends on the west coast of North America, and the cities of Los Angeles and San Francisco in particular!
While the countdown continues in other parts of the world, there are people in some countries lucky enough to have already got the chance to lay hands on their retail copy of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3… like a bunch of fine fellows and fellowettes in Australia!
On the night of March 23rd game journalists from across South Africa gathered at ‘The Venue’ (it’s a venue) in Johannesburg’s “exclusive and vibrant” Melrose Arch (it’s very vibrant) to witness the launch of SHIFT 2 Unleashed, the latest and greatest realistic racing game from EA and Slightly Mad Studios.
Not only were there a half-dozen demo stations on hand to let us sample SHIFT 2 Unleashed for ourselves, but Slightly Mad Studios Chief Operations Officer and game design contributor Stephen Viljoen was present at the shindig to properly demonstrate the game he and his team have been working at for close on two years.
Thanks to our exclusive interview with Viljoen (read part one of the interview here, and part two over here), we already had a good heads-up on what SHIFT 2 Unleashed is all about and what the team’s goals were in creating the game, but we still managed to pick up a healthy number of new, informative morsels while seeing this stunning new racer in action.

What do orange Barberton daisies, green and purple suckers and orange apricot sweets all have in common? The answer is quite simple really, they’re all the Xbox 360 colours and were lavishly spread out at Tuesday’s launch of Kinect and Xbox LIVE at the Urban Tree venue in Johannesburg, South Africa.
So in keeping with the Xbox 360 colours theme, there were brightly coloured Japanese lanterns hanging from the ceiling, purple couches and ottomans scattered around the venue and Avatar cardboard cutouts mingling among the crowd of journalists and guests who were also (mostly) decked out in the Xbox 360 colours to show their support of the brand.
Microsoft’s controller-free gaming device for Xbox 360, Kinect, is all set and ready to launch across South Africa, the UK and Europe tomorrow to save gamers from the hassle of having to deal with those darned ‘joysticks’ in order to play brand new gaming experiences.
To celebrate the release of Kinect in South Africa, Xbox 360 is hosting what looks to be a whopping launch event in Johannesburg to give the media and invited guests a chance to get their ‘hands on’ the device and test out what it really means to interact with games using nothing more than hand and body movements.
Of course, El33tonline’s Lisa is at the event to get the lowdown on these hip happenings, and our fearless Editor-in-Chief is sending through live, direct-feed images from the shindig to let us know what’s going on right now.
These images are simply a taster of El33tonline’s coverage to come – we’ll be running a full report on Kinect’s launch in South Africa very soon, which will be followed by extended coverage on the device itself and the current crop of available games, too.
