The release of THQ and Kaos Studios’ Homefront earlier this year was met with a less than stellar critical response as gamers bemoaned the extraordinarily short and underwhelming singleplayer campaign, but paused to heap at least a little praise on the game’s multiplayer.
Despite encouraging sales numbers (especially for a brand new intellectual property competing in the cutthroat military shooter genre), Kaos Studios was shut down at THQ’s behest, leaving the future of the Homefront franchise in doubt.
A perfectly good day had to go and be ruined by an awful round of news from the world of game development, didn’t it?
It’s been revealed that the New York-based Homefront developer Kaos Studios is shutting down, while UK-based studio THQ Digital Warrington will suffer the same fate.
Kaos Studios has quietly released a new update for the Xbox 360 version of Homefront which aims to improve game stability, and includes “various other fixes.”
With the release of this latest patch for Homefront, look out for the ‘Ability Pack’ downloadable content (DLC), which will open up to you after you’ve updated your game to the latest version.
Details of another DLC offering on June 7th have also been revealed – find out about the fixes have been made to Homefront, the new content you have access to, and what this ‘Fire Sale’ map pack is all about:
THQ and Kaos Studios’ Homefront released on Xbox 360, PlayStation 3 and PC only a few weeks ago to impressive commercial success, selling over one million units during the first week of availability, and 375 000 copies in the US on day one!
For a new intellectual property competing in the extremely cut-throat military-themed first-person shooter market, this is incredible!
El33tonline and Ster Kinekor recently gave you a chance to win a copy of Homefront on all platforms, and we’ve collected the names of the winners! Are you one of them?
Following in the wake of similarly upsetting news regarding redundancies at Sony Online Entertainment’s range of in-house studios, THQ has today confirmed that layoffs have hit two of its developers – Kaos Studios and Volition.
16 employees at the Champaign, Illinois-based Volition Inc. have been let go in an effort to “adjust [THQ’s] workforce to fit the studio’s current needs, which is a relatively common occurrence in the game development industry.”
The long-awaited Homefront released just last month to an impressive reception, and since launch the military-themed first-person shooter has gone on to sell over one million copies around the world after enjoying great day one sales success in the US, with 375 000 units being sold in the country during the first 24 hours of availability!
For a brand new intellectual property in one region, this is highly impressive!
El33tonline and Ster Kinekor are giving you a chance to see what all the fuss is about in our latest competition, as we’re giving away copies of Homefront across all platforms!
To stand a chance of winning Homefront on Xbox 360, PlayStation 3 or PC, you can head on over to El33tonline’s Homefront Competition page and answer a question that we’ve put to you. You may need to think about it for a while in order answer completely honestly…
You don’t need me to tell you that the realism-based first-person shooter genre is overcrowded. You don’t need me to tell you that this self-same genre is hot business in the game industry as publishers vie to create ‘the next big thing.’ Similarly, you don’t need me to tell you how fierce the competition for online multiplayer supremacy is within this genre, as titans of the videogame world slog it out to try and invite you into their universe (and keep you there) with dozens of addictive tricks, desperately aiming to lock you into the game.
You also don’t need me to tell you about the stratospheric quality that most of these games boast, with production values to match Hollywood blockbuster films and gameplay refinement to effortlessly remove all obstacles towards enjoying an awesome, fulfilling experience.
You may need someone to tell you about Homefront, however, to let you know how this game fits in with those ‘titans.’ While THQ and Kaos Studios have produced a ‘contender’ for the first-person shooter crown, Call of Duty, Battlefield and even Half-Life 2 still remain the kings of the realm.

On day one of launch, THQ and Kaos Studio’s Homefront managed to sell an impressive 375 000 units in the US alone, and due to high demand for online play the companies recently increased server capacity and released a series of patches to help the multiplayer side of things run more smoothly.
Now, THQ has announced that Homefront has sold in excess of one million units around the world since launching over the week of March 18th, while 2.4 million units of the military-themed first-person shooter have made their way into retail.
According to a post on the official Homefront blog, the development team at Kaos Studios is currently looking into issues players of the game have been experiencing with regards to the multiplayer portion of this just-released first-person shooter.
While the team has already “dramatically increased server capacity to meet the unprecedented demand,” which is helping out with many of the connection problems players have run into, patches for both the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 versions of Homefront are already available and incoming.
Here’s a list of fixes Kaos has implemented for PS3:
THQ’s military-themed shooter Homefront arrived on shelves across North America two days ago, on the 15th of March. Since then the publisher has announced “robust” first day sales for the title and undertaken to add dedicated server capacity to meet the strong multiplayer demand.
THQ and Kaos Studios’ military-themed shooter may only be due for release next week around the world, but that’s not stopping the publisher/developer pair from releasing a grand launch trailer for Homefront!
Showcasing explosive action and intriguing in-game sequences from the first-person shooter, this launch trailer for Homefront will deftly cement any ideas you’ve previously had about the game either confirming your excitement, increasing your excitement or instilling a sense of captivating curiosity.
If you’re not one for shooters, however, the launch trailer won’t do much to grab your attention. If you enjoy shooters, it’ll throttle your interest:
Late last week THQ confirmed ‘gold status’ for Kaos Studio’s military-themed first-person shooter, Homefront, and with this announcement comes the release of a new multiplayer trailer to not only remind us that the game isn’t only about its singleplayer campaign, but also to showcase all of the ways things can explode.
I don’t think I’ve personally ever witnessed as many explosions in a single videogame trailer, have you?
THQ has just confirmed that Homefront has gone ‘gold,’ and is ready to go into mass manufacturing in order to make its way into retailers around the world. Handy, because the military-themed shooter is due for release in only two week’s time!
Executive Vice President of Core Games at THQ, Danny Bilson said of Homefront:
OK, so only half of this latest trailer for Homefront features actual live-action people and locations, but what’s there sets up the rest of the video very nicely, with chilling scenes of outright urban and suburban military warfare exploding all over the streets of America.
If this trailer is anything to go by, it looks as though developer Kaos Studios will effortlessly reach its goal of delivering a gripping, story-based first-person shooter with none of the melodrama of other, similar shooters…
New York City is no stranger to massive advertisements for the latest videogames, and now THQ and Kaos Studios’ Homefront is muscling in on the territory (you can’t call that place a city) with enormous announcement banners of its own!
Executive Vice President of Core Games at THQ, Danny Bilson, recently shared an image over Twitter revealing how New Yorkers are being exposed to Homefront:
