Pseudo-Third Person Shooters are here to stay, and in particular the gun-and-cover sub-genre is rising in popularity. Strolling further down The Path of Obvious Statements, it is also a shoo-in that franchises are “the next big thing” in gaming. Kane & Lynch: Dead Men earned a good reception so it would have been simply criminal in the age of franchises for Kane & Lynch to not stage a return to the gun-and-cover arena with a sequel. It appears common sense (cents?) has inevitably prevailed and here we are in the latter stages of 2010 with a sequel which officially marks the advent of the Kane and Lynch franchise.

2K Games’ mobster-themed action adventure game, Mafia II, has managed to remain at the top of Chart Track’s UK Software Sales listing for the second week in a row, even though overall sales of the game dropped by 23% compared to the week previous.

Hot dang, we’ve got another major European PlayStation Store update on our hands!

PlayStation Network LogoTwo massive demos for RUSE and Vanquish? Downloadable content for Bioshock 2, Split/Second and Kane & Lynch 2? Another episode of Sam and Max: The Devil’s Playhouse? Valkyria Chronicles II for PSP? Alien Breed: Impact?

Could this update have been any better?

Well, what if I told you there were also some great price offers on a bunch of cool games, as well as the usual assortment of Rock Band and Guitar Hero DLC, plus themes, Uncharted 2 Avatars and interesting videos?

Ladies and gentleman, the update just got better.

Head on down below to see the full list of content soon to become available on the European PlayStation Store:

And wouldn’t you know it, Mafia II is this week’s No. 1 on Chart Track’s UK Software Sales listing. Mob connections do have their benefits, it seems.

Are the other games ‘on the take’? Were Kane & Lynch 2 and Toy Story 3 threatened and told to ‘take a dive’ this week, or else? How many cement-encrusted game boxes are now lying at the bottom of a river somewhere, just so that Mafia II could parade around at the top of the UK sales listing?

We’ll never know.

Kane & Lynch 2: Dog Days Logo 2

This week on Chart Track’s UK Software sales chart, Square Enix and IO Interactive’s Kane & Lynch 2: Dog Days has managed to slaughter the competition and appear at No. 1 on the listing, ahead of current chart hero Toy Story 3.

This performance is a much better result for this action adventure franchise, as the original Kane & Lynch title was only able to reach a high of No. 14 on the UK chart when it released in 2007.

I don’t know about you, but every time a new video for Kane & Lynch 2 is released, I get super excited. The bobbing camera, the special screen filter, the visceral sound effects… it’s looking mighty!

And even though this latest video for the game isn’t taken from actual in-game footage and is presented in more of a cinematic fashion, the trailer still holds close to the core experience of Kane & Lynch 2 and at least alludes to what you’ll be seeing and doing during the game.

And if that’s not enough, you can watch another new trailer for the game featuring a bit of cooperative play from Kane & Lynch 2, all of which you can find below:

Kane & Lynch is a game that really tried its best to stand out but never got the attention it deserved. It was focused on co-op play, similarly to Gears of War that was released around the same time. However, Kane & Lynch could not produce a smooth control scheme and problem free gaming, something the competition did brilliantly. What Kane & Lynch did leave us with was the feeling of expectation. If they could only spend a bit more time tweaking the game it could be so much better. Maybe a small patch would sort out some of the issues. However, the patch never came and a lot of gamers felt very sore over the lack of support from IO Interactive.

Roll on 2010, and after a break from serious action games with their Mini Ninjas game, IO is back with a brand new Kane & Lynch game, Dog Days. With an awesome pedigree of great games and one possibly great game behind them, I was very willing to give the latest title a shot (pun intended).

Do you think you can kill the “psychotic killer Lynch” and the “convicted criminal Kane,” the stars of the upcoming Kane & Lynch 2: Dog Days? Do you think you can go toe-to-toe with “ultra violent convicts”?

After watching this new trailer for IO Interactive’s action game, any confidence you may have in your own ability to take down professional killers will be severely diminished, as the pair shoot, destroy and ruthlessly intimidate those unfortunate enough to cross their paths:

Kane & Lynch 2: Dog Days from IO Interactive is looking super sharp, not because the developer is creating the world’s most graphically impressive game, but rather because Kane & Lynch 2 features some of the most striking visual direction a triple-A studio has dared to inject into a videogame of this generation.

Using ‘simple’ camera tricks and filters, IO has managed to create a game with a very unique aesthetic that is instantly recognisable, with graphics technology that is arguably a little on the old side.

The only question is how long will one be able to play Kane & Lynch 2 without feeling a little ill with all of the visual stimuli? To decide for yourself, get a taste of Kane & Lynch 2’s gameplay below with two videos featuring singleplayer and multiplayer action:
