Sales tracking firm The NPD Group has released its report on the state of the US videogame industry for the month of January 2012, noting a concerning 34% year-over-year drop in sales across software, hardware and accessory market segments resulting in revenues of $750.6 million, down from $1.14 billion in January 2011.
Final Fantasy XIII-2 has broken FIFA 12’s reign at the top of Chart Track’s UK Software Sales this week by claiming the No. 1 position for itself, thus becoming the first new chart topper of 2012 during its debut week on sale.
EA Sports’ FIFA 12 has retained the top spot on Chart Track’s UK Software Sales listing to rack up its sixth consecutive No. 1 position, upping the title’s life-to-date chart victories to eight in total.
EA Sports’ FIFA 12 has managed to appear at the top of Chart Track’s UK Software sales listing for the fifth time in a row, allowing the football sim to claim a total of seven weeks at No. 1 since release.

Despite a massive 54% drop in sales compared to last week, FIFA 12 has managed to top Chart Track’s UK Software Sales listing for the fourth week in a row, taking the football game’s total weeks at the top to six.
In the very first Chart Track UK Software Sales listing of 2012, EA manages to clinch both first and second places in the chart with FIFA 12 (sales down 63%) and Battlefield 3 (sales also down 63%).
Every year, bookies place bets on which videogame will take the top spot on Chart Track’s UK Software Sales chart over the Christmas period (people will bet on anything), and in past years, a FIFA football title from EA Sports or a Call of Duty game from Activision have always been the firm favourites.
Could the bookies have predicated that The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim would have occupied the top slot for two weeks in a row to authoritatively become the Christmas No. 1 in 2011?
