Rugby fans haven’t had the luxury of being ‘choosey’ due to the lack of rugby union games in the market, especially next-gen console owners, so after playing Rugby World Cup 2011, I was very excited to see what Jonah Lomu Rugby Challenge offered in comparison - I was looking for something fresh and different.

If you’ve already made plans to pick up Jonah Lomu Rugby Challenge first thing on Thursday morning you may want to cancel them and move them forward by one day. That’s because the game’s distributor in South Africa - Megarom Interactive - has announced that they will release the title a day early due to “immense pressure and enthusiasm from fans and retailers alike”.
Jonah Lomu Rugby Challenge (as it’s titled in South Africa) finally has a release date, and thankfully it’s earlier than many anticipated after the game’s publisher Tru Blu Entertainment assured fans that it wouldn’t release later than September 30th, as it has today been announced that the console versions of Rugby Challenge will launch in early September in the Southern Hemisphere.
The competition will certainly be fierce during next month’s Rugby World Cup tournament in New Zealand, which starts on September 9th. However, there’ll also be a battle raging on between two rugby-orientated games which release during a similar time frame in order to cash in on the excitement and anticipation surrounding the event.
These two titles are Rugby World Cup 2011 and Jonah Lomu Rugby Challenge. The former releases on August 26th and the latter’s release date is yet to be confirmed. This is creating a bit of a public relations nightmare for Rugby Challenge’s publishers Tru Blu Entertainment as fans pester them to commit to a date.
The Rugby World Cup later this year has proved to be the catalyst for developers to once again represent this great sport in video game form.
There are at least two rugby games coming out this year, including Rugby World Cup 2011 and Jonah Lomu Rugby Challenge. Both will be released within a week or two of the real-life tournament which begins on September 9th and will be available for PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360. Jonah Lomu Rugby Challenge will also be making its way to PC at an unspecified date.
