The QuakeCon event held in Dallas, Texas every year is a celebration of all things id Software, who play host to the affair in order to talk directly to the public about some of their current work and development directions, show off their new games, and play their old ones in a massive network of computers (entry to which is completely free thanks to some kindly sponsors).

id Software LogoThis year’s QuakeCon officially kicked off with a joint press conference with fellow developers Bethesda Softworks (both id Software and Bethesda are now owned by media company, ZeniMax), as id’s CEO, Todd Hollenshead, revealed a few little titbits about current goings-on at the company.

For one thing, we’re going to have to wait until next year’s QuakeCon to find out about id’s currently-in-development DOOM 4, but added that “When we show it to you you’re gonna love it!”

Furthermore, Hollenshead announced that the Xbox 360’s Xbox LIVE Arcade will soon be seeing two new additions to the service from id, namely Quake Arena Arcade, a version of Quake 3: Arena tuned to the Xbox 360’s control style and online functionality, as well as a re-release of the classic DOOM II, which will contain higher definition artwork, sounds and online play.

Last week, news of John Carmack’s comments in the latest issue of Edge sparked quite a bit of fanboy nerd-rage, as Carmack essentially said that, currently, id Software’s upcoming game RAGE is performing half as well on the PS3 as on the PC and Xbox 360 platforms.

By the time the game launches, however, that will be another story, as Carmack then went on to say: “Everything is designed as a 60 hertz game. We expect [RAGE] to be 60 hertz on every supported platform.

“The work remaining is getting it locked so there’s never a dropped frame or a tear,” Carmack continued, “but we’re confident that we’re going to get that.”

John CarmackLegendary graphics programmer and game developer at id Software, John Carmack, has recently stirred the fanboy nest with a statement that is nothing less than controversial: id Software’s next game, the first-person action racing game RAGE, runs faster on the Xbox 360, and “lags a little bit” on the PS3.

These statements appear in the latest issue of Edge magazine, where the team there had an opportunity to interview Carmack about all things id Sofware, which included the revelation that, while RAGE runs at 60 frames a second (fps) on both the PC and Xbox 360 versions of the game, the PS3 currently only runs at between 20 and 30fps. Here’s Carmack:

A teaser website for RAGE, id Software’s upcoming first-person shooter (with elements of action racing), has been launched and, much like the game itself, it looks amazing.

RAGE Teaser Website

The website features some interactive elements, with the ability to click on certain points of interest in order to explore the background story of RAGE. It’s apparent that these reveals will continue for the next four weeks, leading up to a full reveal at id Software’s QuakeCon at the beginning of August.

In a particularly shocking turn of events, Bethesda Softworks (Oblivion, Fallout 3) parent company, ZeniMax Media, has completed its acquisition of the legendary DOOM and Quake developer, id Software, a historically staunchly independent studio. id Software CEO, Todd Hollenshead commented on the acquisition:

id Software Logo“This was a unique opportunity to team with a smart, sophisticated publisher like Bethesda Softworks where the interests of the studio and the publisher will be fully aligned in the development and marketing of our titles.

“In addition,” Hollenshead continued, “we will now have financial and business resources to support the future growth of id Software, a huge advantage which will result in more and even better games for our fans.”

Game developer and graphics programmer extraordinaire, John Carmack, who will continue at id Software as technical director, remarked:

A new DOOM title will be winding its way onto the iPhone and iPod Touch next week in the form of DOOM: Resurrection from id Software and Escalation Studios.

DOOM: Resurrection LogoDOOM: Resurrection is an entirely new entry to the DOOM universe, but using lower resolution assets from 2004’s DOOM 3 to create a ‘next-generation,’ fully 3D iPhone game.

The title isn’t a port or a remake, as Wolfenstein on the iPhone was before it, but has been built from the ground-up for Apple’s mobile devices. The game apparently contains eights levels and a promise of five hours of gameplay, as the events that play out run parallel to those in the original DOOM 3.

You can watch an impressive trailer for DOOM: Resurrection below:

Activision Publishing have announced the release date for their upcoming first-person paranormal World War II game, Wolfenstein and it’s sooner than you think.

The latest entry to the legendary Wolfenstein series of games, in development at Raven and overseen by license holders id Software, will be releasing on August 4th on PC, Xbox 360 and PS3.

It’s safe to assume that this date is for the US, while the rest of the world will get it the traditional ‘few days later’ on the following Friday, although that’s not yet confirmed.

Looking at the released screenshots and trailers for Wolfenstein, it’s also safe to assume that the game will be pretty action-packed, although that, too, is not yet confirmed…

A large batch of new screenshots (fifteen!) have been released for the upcoming World War II and paranormal experiments inspired first-person shooter, Wolfenstein, in development at Raven under the watchful eye of id Software.

Wolfenstein Screenshot 1

Wolfenstein’s main gameplay concept is something called The Veil, an alternate universe, of sorts, which allows those who can harness its power to see their current world in a different way.

What this means for the game is that, once you enter, or activate, The Veil, your current environment will have changed and enemies will also be seen differently, enabling you to pinpoint their weaknesses, discover hidden areas in the game or see things that simply aren’t there in the ‘real world.’

Wolfenstein Screenshot 2

It also means that you get a bunch of cool powers, such as slowing down time to avoid bullet fire and run circles around your enemies. It’s been done before, but that’s just one of the abilities you’ll have access to while playing the game.

Check out the rest of the screenshots for Wolfenstein, releasing on Xbox 360, PS3 and PC later this year, below:

id Software’s follow-up to their blockbuster series of DOOM games, DOOM 4, is set to get an authentic story written by an authentic author. What’s so special about this?

DOOM BoxWell, the DOOM series, as players would know, isn’t well known for its breathtaking, thrilling story arcs, but rather the visceral actions of shooting and destroying zombies and demons. DOOM 3 had the assistance of Matt Costello as far as writing was concerned, but that game was still much more about the edge-of-the-seat action than edge-of-the-seat gripping story and dialogue.

So, to correct this perceived problem, id Software have hired on the services of one Graham Joyce, who has an incredible writing resume. Having written fourteen published novels, twenty-six short stories, won the British Fantasy Award four times, two Imaginaire awards and the World Fantasy Award, Joyce is top-class. He also lectures creative writing courses. He knows his stuff, then.

While Joyce’s exact role in the development of DOOM 4 and its story is unclear, he did disclose his involvement with the project thus:

“I can say that id have hired me to help develop the storyline potential.”

So that will have to be good enough, as id Software are probably only going to reveal anything further on the DOOM 4 project later this year, or after their next game, RAGE, ships.

The legendary id Software programmer, John Carmack, and his team of intrepid aerospace and rocketry enthusiasts, Armadillo Aerospace, have won the Level One portion of the Northrop Grumman Lunar Lander Challenge, picking up the $350 000 prize.

John Carmack - Armadillo AerospaceThe competition forms part of an effort to encourage the acceleration of the development of commercial aerospace technologies, as well as assist in developing nimble vehicles for space exploration and related transportation work. What was necessary to win the prize?

“The Competition is divided into two levels. Level 1 requires a rocket to take off from a designated launch area, rocket up to 150 feet (50 meters) altitude, then hover for 90 seconds while landing precisely on a landing pad 50 meters away. The flight must then be repeated in reverse—and both flights, along with all of the necessary preparation for each, must take place within a two and a half hour period.”

If you think that’s challenging, wait till you read what’s necessary for Level 2:

According to John Carmack, technical director at id Software, the reason Apple’s efforts to create a good gaming platform (in the Mac) in the past failed was because Apple’s CEO, Steve Jobs, is ‘not a gamer.’

John Carmack“The truth is Steve Jobs doesn’t care about games”, said Carmack. “This is going to be one of those things that I say something in an interview and it gets fed back to him and I’m on his [black] list for awhile on that, until he needs me to do something else there. But I think that that’s my general opinion. He’s not a gamer.”

Speaking during his QuakeCon 2008 keynote, however, Carmack was full of praise for Apple’s iPhone, which he claimed to be as powerful as a PS2 or original Xbox. id Software has had great success in the last few years with their mobile range of games, with DOOM RPG and Orcs and Elves selling a combined 2 million units. Developing for the iPhone, then, is an exciting prospect for Carmack, stating that any game they may have planned “would be a graphical tour de force”.
