Following quick-fire rumours (and denials) late last year regarding the shaky future of id Software and the continued development of DOOM 4 (or ‘the next DOOM game’), it’s been confirmed that a number of developers have been let go from the studio.
As has become du jour, the news sparked on Twitter as 3D artist and Polycount.com editor Adam Bromell posted:
If you’re looking to get to grips with id Software’s latest first-person shooter before deciding whether or not it’s worth a purchase, then a demo for RAGE has recently become available on Xbox LIVE Marketplace.
RAGE introduces you to its story and world with a quick CG cinematic setting up the post-apocalyptic scenario that you’ll be adventuring through: The enormous asteroid Apophis has hit Earth, but not before the world’s best and brightest have been safely secured away in underground facilities, or Arks, to increase their chances of surviving the asteroid’s impact and resultant toxic fallout.
As one of the chosen, you awake one day in one of these cryogenic vaults only to discover the rest of its inhabitants long-dead in their chambers.

Anyone who knows a thing or two about legendary id Software graphics programmer and technical director John Carmack will be aware that the genius programmer and rocket scientist consumes books at an incredibly rapid rate, tearing through tomes of knowledge at an inhuman pace.
These books range a gamut of topics, from history and science to technology, programming and science fiction - and anything in-between - perfectly showcasing his philosophy of ‘learning everything from anything.’ Anything can be an opportunity to discover something new.
[Update] Added response from VP of PR and Marketing at Bethesda Softworks, Pete Hines. [End of Update]
Rumours and reports doing the rounds today concern the future (or not) of the next entry to id Software’s legendary DOOM series of first-person shooters.
We’ve reached that point in the PS3 and Xbox 360’s life cycle when developers are having to make bold moves in order to offer a technically superior product to what we’ve experienced in the past.
One of the ways they’re doing this is by releasing games which consume more hard drive or disc space in order to achieve more detailed graphics or aural effects.
Releasing on October 4th in the US and October 7th in Europe and the UK, it sounds like a good time to get excited about id Software and Bethesda Softworks’ hectic first-person shooter, RAGE, with an excellent TV trailer that aired in North America recently.
Watch below:
For the first time in video form, id Software and Bethesda Softworks have revealed the co-operative mode included in RAGE with a lengthy piece of gameplay footage showcasing two players working their way through a mission called “Water Service’ in the game’s Wasteland Legends co-op mode.
And it’s looking spectacular!
Stepping into the gamescom demo room for RAGE, I didn’t expect to see id Software’s Tim Willits greeting journalists at the door, and I certainly didn’t expect to discuss anything to do with South Africa, either.

There’s something about this latest RAGE trailer that’s just a little different to the videos id Software and Bethesda have released in the past. Something very calm. Something very confident.
The release of id Software’s next first-person shooter RAGE is just around the corner, with a scheduled launch date of October 4th in North America and October 7th in Europe and the UK, so we’re going to need to prepare for the variety of mean, nasty, disfigured and otherwise tough-looking enemies we’ll come across.
Only once these brutal foes are defeated shall we be able to ride off into the dusty, cloud-encrusted sunset to live a life of peace and tranquillity.
Until then, however, we’re going to need to defend ourselves against these fearsome fellows:
As id Software heads into the homestretch of development on the studio’s upcoming blockbuster first-person shooter, RAGE, it seems as though there’s a little bit of cleaning up to do before the developer can finally put the finishing touches on its game and say goodbye to almost seven years of work.
It needs to shred some memories.
The penultimate video developer diary for RAGE has gone live and this time sees members of id Software discussing the various wily and active enemies you’ll encounter in the studio’s upcoming first-person shooter.
id Software’s ever-exuberant creative director Tim Willits goes in-depth on the bandit clans (Wasted, Ghost and Shrouded) that run The Wasteland of RAGE, while also talking about The Authority – the most challenging opponents in the game.
Developer id Software is famous for its range of weapons introduced in games such as DOOM and Quake, and while most of them are based on real-world guns, the developer has over the years managed to make their weapons icons of the first-person shooter genre.
With RAGE, id Software is aiming to do the same thing all over again with explosive shotguns and rocket launchers, the unique ‘wing stick’ and crossbow, and a few extra gadgets and abilities to give players and edge in combat and truly provide us with different sets of options in a firefight.
After just getting done talking about one mighty looking first-person shooter, it’s time to discuss another: RAGE!
