So the rumours were true: Corporate Executive Officer and Executive Deputy President of Sony Corporation and president of the Consumer Products and Services Group (i.e. head of Sony Computer Entertainment) has today been named president and CEO of Sony Corporation.
Current president and CEO Sir Howard Stringer will remain in his roles until April 1st, at which time Hirai will officially take on his new duties.
Hirai said of his promotion:
[Update] Sony Computer Entertainment recently delivered a bit of bad news, saying that the PlayStation Network will not, in fact, resume services any time soon as more testing is required. More information over here. [End of Update]
The PlayStation Network should be up and running in the next couple of days according to the latest update on the Playstation Blog. Nick Caplin, Head of Communications at SCEE, wrote:
“Today our global network and security teams at Sony Network Entertainment and Sony Computer Entertainment began the final stages of internal testing of the new system, an important step towards restoring PlayStation Network and Qriocity services.”
The ongoing outage is proving to be a publicity nightmare for Sony, as PlayStation 3 and PSP owners take to social mediums like Twitter to vent their frustrations over being locked out of PSN, as well as Sony’s unwillingness to give them an exact date for when the service will resume.
