Videogame industry legend, programming technology guru and id Software (DOOM, Quake) co-founder John Carmack is set to receive a Lifetime Achievement Award at the upcoming Game Developers Choice Awards for his outstanding contributions to the art and science of games, following in the footsteps of prolific industry stars Sid Meier, Shigeru Miyamoto, Hideo Kojima and Richard Garriott.

John CarmackThe Lifetime Achievement Award recognises “the career and achievements of developers who have made an indelible impact on the craft of game development,” and with Carmack’s more than two decade history of making games, working on breakthrough technology and his contributions to popularising the first-person shooter genre with titles such as Wolfenstein, DOOM and Quake, as well as his efforts in continually pushing the bounds of graphics technology, you could say he’s made an “indelible impact” on game development.

Event Director of the Game Developers Conference Meggan Scavio said of Carmack and the award:

At the Konami press conference yesterday, Hideo Kojima (he of Metal Gear Solid fame) confirmed that he and the team at Kojima Productions will indeed be providing production support to Madrid-based developer, MercurySteam, as they work on a next-generation Castlevania game, Lords of Shadow.

Hideo KojimaAdditionally, Kojima announced development work on something called Metal Gear Arcade, which is essentially Metal Gear Online repurposed for coin-op arcade play and using 3D goggles. Metal Gear Arcade will be out in Japan later this year.

These two announced games then take the tally of Kojima’s current projects up to four, with Metal Gear Solid: Rising (for home consoles) and Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker (for the PSP).

Also commenting on the series of teasers found on the Kojima Productions website over the last few weeks, Kojima said that the clouds represent “what the current status nowadays [is] in our real lives,” continuing on to say that the entertainment business is “here to clear up this storm, and we need to work together.”

After two weeks of dank, gloomy weather on the Kojima Productions teaser website, the sun has finally broken through the clouds, shining down on the peaceful, scenic view below, with what sounds like the beach in the background, but it could also just be the wind rustling through the trees.

Kojima Productions Teaser Site Sun

Does this confirm that Sunny, the character from Metal Gear Solid 4, will make an appearance in whatever it is that Kojima Productions have been teasing this whole time?

Another symbol has appeared on the site as well, which looks like an ‘8,’ but could just as easily be a ‘B’ or a zero… but it’s probably an eight:

It seems the moment Metal Gear fans have been waiting for has finally arrived - one of the key characters from the Metal Gear Solid universe, Raiden, has appeared on the Kojima Productions teaser website.

Kojima Productions Teaser Raiden

The teaser website has been featuring updates over the last two weeks, all alluding to a big new announcement that studio head, Hideo Kojima, will make at this year’s E3, running next week.

The latest update to the on-going series of teasers on the Kojima Productions’s ‘Next’ site doesn’t really reveal anything more than the last update, only now the weather has turned even worse than before, with rain pouring down.

The lightning strikes continue to reveal mysterious letters, now with the addition of a ‘P’ and an ‘R’ into the mix, as well as the accompanying letters from last time. The timer has stopped, though, now simply sitting on a bunch of zeros…

Ho-ho, but what’s this? After staring at the scene for a little longer than is healthy, a lightning strike revealed a face… it was pretty scary.

Is that Big Boss?

The ongoing mystery that is the Kojima Productions teaser website has been updated recently with new clues that may point to a disappointing conclusion.

On the website, the weather in the original scene depicted has deteriorated to the point of gloomy, rainy weather and frequent lightning strikes. After each major lightning strike, a new letter is revealed, with four letters appearing in total – S, e, E and 3… or even 5, @, E, 3.

The letters seem to appear randomly, but one possible reading of them would be in that order, which could spell out ‘SeE3,’ or ‘See E3…’ or even ‘5 @ E3,’ meaning ‘Metal Gear Solid 5 at E3.’

Do we have to wait that long for an announcement on Kojima Productions’ next game, or will the next website update clue us in a bit further? Time will tell.

Kojima Productions’ announcement teaser site has been updated with some stormy weather, lightning strikes and a timer counting down to roughly three and a half days until another tease (possibly on Friday), or a maybe solid announcement this time.

Don’t count on it though, as words doing the rounds are that there will be another three such teases, comprising four days each, coincidentally leading up to the beginning of E3 on June 2nd, where Kojima said his next game would be announced.

Also, whenever a lightning strike hits the screen, the number ‘5’ can be seen briefly before it fades away again… or is it an ‘S’? What could it all mean? Metal Gear Solid 5? Metal Gear Solid: S… omething?

Oh, Kojima Productions, you’re such a tease!

It was revealed yesterday that Konami and Kojima Productions legend, Hideo Kojima, creator of the Metal Gear Solid series of games (and others) will deliver the keynote address at the 2009 Game Developers Conference (GDC).

Hideo Kojima Kojima’s keynote, entitled “Solid Game Design: Making the ‘Impossible’ Possible,” will focus on “conquering various development obstacles with creative game design, using the driving game design philosophies behind the Metal Gear series as reference.” This keynote address will apparently be the first time Kojima will attend the GDC. In an interview with Japanese game magazine, Famitsu, Metal Gear and Kojima Productions boss, Hideo Kojima, has spoken out about the game design practices currently in use in Japan versus the more advanced thinking going on at Western game developers. Kojima commented on the West’s use of hi-definition gaming in moving games forward:

Hideo Kojima “Game design up to now has been about making rules. It was like a card game; there were lots of things that weren’t possible and had to be cut. With hi-def, the more real it gets, the less instruction you need to give, so preoccupying yourself with making rules seems silly. Western developers have realized this, but Japanese ones are still preoccupied with making these rules.”

Kojima also spoke about Japan’s largely insular entertainment market by saying:

“The US and European marketplace are far better balanced… Japan makes all their own books and movies and music. You can’t export entertainment made by Japanese people in the Japanese language, so it’s all made with the sort of budgets that guarantee profit within the Japanese marketplace only.”

Kojima also revealed that he’s currently addicted to Left 4 Dead, a game people tell him “would never work in Japan… [Laughing] Maybe I should quit being Japanese.”
