The Nintendo DS topped Japanese hardware sales for yet another week. The DS sold 114 036 units in total, with the DSi accounting for 87 185 units and the DS Lite 26 851 for the week ending the 30th of November.

The Nintendo DSiThe increase in DS sales (up roughly 6 600 units from last week) can most likely be attributed to the third game in Level 5’s Professor Layton adventure trilogy. Professor Layton and the Last Time Travel debuted at number 1 on this week’s software chart with a whopping 347 000 copies.

The PSP sold 55 090 units to secure second place, down from last week’s 61 226 despite the PSP performing well in the software chart with five PSP games featuring in the Top 10.

The Wii followed with 49 848 units, up quite substantially from last week’s 35 298. Only one Wii title appeared in the software chart this week, Nintendo’s Animal Crossing: City Folk sold 109 000 copies in its second week.

The Nintendo DSiHardware sales were in general higher this week, no doubt helped along by the boost in software sales. The Nintendo DS was again the best-selling console in Japan, selling 107 423 units, roughly 18 000 more than last week. The DS Lite accounted for 18 580 of these sales and the remainder, 88 843, were sales of the DSi.

The DS dominated the software side of things, racking up six of the Top 10 games, most notable of which was Chronos Trigger DS which sold 271 000 copies to land second place on the chart.

The PSP also experienced a significant boost in sales, selling 61 226 units this week in comparison to last week’s 38 153. Although there was just one PSP title in the Top 10 software chart, that title (Gundam vs Gundam) performed well in its debut week with sales of 267 000 copies.

The PSP sold 38 153 units this week to hold on to second place, also dropping in sales from last week’s 43 726. The Wii took third place with 24 726 copies followed by the PS3 with 18 354 and the Xbox 360 with 12 759. With earlier reports speaking of Nintendo’s DS revision, the DSi, selling in excess of 170 000 units, it’s no surprise that the DS has shot straight to the top of the Japanese hardware chart, ahead of the PSP. With 188 294 units sold for the week, thanks to the release of the DSi, compared to 22 965 sold last week, it’s safe to say the DS will remain at the top for some time to come, unless plagued by hardware shortages.

The PSP is still performing extremely strongly, sitting comfortably at No. 2 this week, with 50 358 units sold compared to 60 467 last week. The surprise achievement this week comes from the PS3, with 39 587 units sold - a huge leap up from the dismal 3 931 units it managed to sell last week. This can probably be attributed to the release of some new blockbuster games (LittleBigPlanet and Grand Theft Auto IV), as well as the Japanese launch of the new 80GB PS3.

The PSP continues its newfound dominance in the Japanese Hardware Charts this week, as it sells through 60 467 units, although that figure is less than half of what it sold last week (159 816).

Despite this, the next set of console sales down, the Wii, manages to sell only half of the PSP’s number, with 24 292 new Wii consoles now sitting in Japanese homes. This is only slightly down from last week’s performance of 26 024 units. The DS, which has been on the slides ever since the DSi announcement, is able to sell 22 965 units for the week - down almost 7 000 units from last week.

This week in the Japanese Hardware Charts, the PSP ridicules the other consoles and sells through an enormous 159 816 units! This number is way up from last week’s total of 23 901 units! This all adds up to a Year-To-Date total of 2 992 962 PSPs sold in Japan.

The old bully of the hardware charts, the DS, hits the No. 2 spot with ‘only’ 29 839 units sold for the week, down from 31 914, still trailing the PSP’s Year-To-Date figure, with 2 468 544. Predictably, the Wii slots into No. 3 with 26 024 units sold this past week in Japan, up from last week’s sales of 22 877.

Something else that is becoming more and more predictable is how the 360 is still outselling the PS3, with 7 856 Xbox 360s moving off the shelves, up slightly from 7 763 units last week, earning the 360 a place at No. 4. The PS2, comparatively speaking, sells a healthy 7 261, also slightly up from last week’s effort of 6 982, managing to outselling its younger sibling, as the PS3 sells an abysmal 4 725 units this week, down from 5 734. How long will this keep up?

The Nintendo DS, while still at the top of the Japanese hardware rankings, has seen it’s sales dropping off by at least 10 000 units for a few weeks now, to the point where its weekly dominance has been less and less impressive, with the No. 2 and No. 3 spots looking more and more competitive. Is this the result of the upcoming release of the DSi in Japan?

As for numbers, the DS sold through 31 914 units this week, down from last week’s 42 385. Sales of the PSP did drop a bit, at 23 901 units from 26 045, but the machine still remained in the No. 2 spot. The Wii also fell in sales, with 22 877 units this week, down from 25 330, meaning it easily hung in at No. 3 in the hardware rankings. Not much to choose between them.

While the Nintendo DS may be continuing along its unstoppable path of Chart Dominance, sales did drop off a bit, to the tune of around 16 000 units, managing to move 42 385 units this week. A result of the DSi announcement? In the No. 2 hardware spot, the PSP, with 26 045 units sold, just beats out the Wii with 25 330 units, helping it reach the No. 3 position.

The struggle for the now-coveted No. 4 spot rages on, and it’s the old kid on the block, the PS2, that squeezes past the competition with 8 618 units. The Xbox 360 once again outdoes the PlayStation 3 to hit the No. 5 spot. Number of new Japanese Xbox 360 owners - 8 271. Number of new Japanese PS3 owners - 7 232.

While the Xbox 360’s relative success in Japan continues, the gap between it and the PS3 has grown very small. Is this the last time Microsoft surpasses Sony in Japan? At least for a little while?

Here are the standings:

Well, no real surprise this week as the Nintendo DS claims the No. 1 spot in the Japanese hardware sales for this week. While there was a 3 000 unit drop in sales, it still easily breezed ahead of the next nearest console, the Wii in second place. The Wii managed to move 26 314 units this week, down very slightly by 3 600 units from last week,

While it may appear as though Sony’s little handheld that could has lost steam, running in at No. 3 with 25 671 units sold this week, it’s interesting to note that its Year to Date sales are higher than that of the DS, with the PSP at 2 783 200, while the DS stands at 2 364 406, revealing how competitive the handheld market has been this past year.

The Xbox 360 was able to maintain its dominance over the PlayStation 3 by selling 11 291 units this week, remaining at No. 4. The PlayStation 2 was able to achieve the same dominance over its younger sibling by moving 9 848 consoles this week, edging into the No. 5 slot. The PlayStation 3 limped in at No. 6 with 8 275 units.

Here are the Japanese Software Charts for the week, in case you missed them.

  • NDS - 57 847
  • Wii - 26 314
  • PSP - 25 671
  • 360 - 11 291
  • PS2 - 9 848
  • PS3 - 8 275

The Nintendo DS was the best-selling console in Japan again for the week ending the 21st of September. According to Media Create it sold 61 242 units, down roughly 2000 units from last week’s performance but still leagues ahead of the other competitors.

In fact the DS sold twice as many as its nearest competitor, the Wii, which sold 29 921 units to secure second place on the chart. The PSP followed closely behind with 28 674 units. Just so you know the Wii experienced a very slight sales increase from last week while the PSP dropped roughly 2000 units below sales recorded for last week.

The Xbox 360 remained ahead of the PS3 for a second week, although it did experience a major decrease in sales. Last week sales of the 360 spiked due to a price decrease and the release of Infinite Undiscovery, leading Microsoft’s console to record 28 188 sales.

This week, however, sales plummeted to 13 777 units, dropping 14 000 below last week’s sales but as I mentioned earlier still placing it ahead of the PS3 which sold a steady 8 156 units. The PS2 was at the bottom of the hardware chart with 7 720 units.

In case you missed this week’s software chart.

  • Wii - 29 921

The Nintendo DS topped the hardware chart in Japan again this week, not surprising given that Pokémon Platinum for the DS sold 963 000 copies in its opening week and that there were a total of four DS titles in the Top 10.

The NDS sold 63 859 units to retain its position as best-selling console in Japan, up drastically from last week’s 51 412. The PSP followed with 30 156 units, down roughly 4300 units from last week, while the Wii was close behind in third with 29 686 units, dropping about 3400 units from last week’s tally.

The big surprise of the week was the Xbox 360 which was nipping at both the Wii and PSPs’ totals with a whopping 28 188 units. The surge in sales was due to the price cut of the Xbox 360 Arcade (which made it the least expensive current-gen console in Japan) and the release of Xbox 360 exclusive Infinite Undiscovery. Square Enix’s action RPG debuted at number 3 on the software chart, recording sales of 90 000 copies in its opening week.

The Xbox 360 outsold the PS3 by over 20 000 units, bettering last week’s total of a dismal 1044 units by nearly 27 000 units. The PS3 and PS2 both dropped marginally from last week with 8 053 and 7669 units respectively.

An exciting week in the hardware race, but expect it to heat up even further with the new PSP due to be released in Japan this October.

Hardware Chart

  1. DS Lite - 63 859
  2. Wii - 30 156
  3. PSP - 29 686
  4. Xbox 360 - 28 188
  5. PS3 - 8 053
  6. PS2 - 7 669

The Nintendo DS continued its reign as best-selling console in Japan for the week ending the 31st of August. The latest Media Create figures show that it sold 56 439 units, selling roughly 400 more units than last week.

The PSP followed with 41 664 units, dropping marginally from last week’s 47 604, but still well behind the DS with almost 15 000 units separating the two handheld competitors.

The Wii continues to sell consistently and with 35 755 units it lands in third place, still well ahead of the current generation race. The PS3 sold 9 775 units and the PS2 8 810, sales of both Sony consoles are up slightly from last week. The Xbox 360 continues to trail with 3 124 units, dropping marginally from last week’s sales, presumably due to lack of stock.

With two PS3 titles debuting in the Top 10, make sure you don’t miss this week’s software chart.

The Nintendo DS continued its reign on top of the Japanese hardware chart for another week. All consoles experienced a sharp decrease in sales this week after last week’s holiday spike.

The DS sold 55 995 units, dropping drastically from last week’s 78 666, but still retaining the title of best-selling console in Japan. This is hardly surprising given Nintendo’s domination of the software chart in the past few weeks. This week Nintendo held eight of the Top 10 positions with six DS titles and two Wii titles. Head over to this week’s software chart to see which four games debuted in the Top 10.

The PSP came in second with 47 604 units, down from last week’s 64 413 but still retaining its lead over the Wii which sold 35 173 units to secure third place. Wii sales shot up last week to 53 036 units, but this week drops almost 17 000 but still remains well ahead in the next generation race.

The PS3 followed with 9 020 units and the PS2 with 8 420, down from last week’s 11 393 and 10 168 units respectively. The Xbox 360 continues its downward spiral, dropping from last week’s courageous performance of 7 358 units to its usual 3 551 this week.
