Speaking to MTV Multiplayer Blog, Microsoft have recommended the Top Ten things all players of their Halo universe RTS, Halo Wars, should do to maximise the experience. An example?

“Play the campaign in co-op with another player over Xbox Live or system link. The campaign really plays differently with two people, plus some of those elusive achievements and medals are easier to get with two folks.”

The Halo universe is a wonderful place to explore with a rich story offering an engaging experience. The timing was certainly right to expand outside of the FPS arena and into the RTS domain. The team at Ensemble Studios had all the right ingredients at their disposal to deliver an epic experience so let’s jump in and see what legacy they left in the wake of their untimely closure.

The challenge with RTS games on console platforms comes in when one has to micro-manage units. A task easily handled on the PC with a mouse can be the Achilles heel when poorly implemented with a console controller. Halo Wars BoxartHalo Wars, Ensemble’s real-time strategy game set in the Halo universe, releases across South Africa today, exclusively on Xbox 360.

Gamers have been feverishly playing the demo since it landed on Xbox Live earlier this month. In fact, so many gamers dabbled in commanding armies that the demo for Halo Wars set the one day record for most demo downloads over Xbox Live, with over 2 million downloads in the first five days.

In case you don’t know, Halo Wars places you in command of powerful UNSC and Covenant armies in epic battles. The game was designed from the ground up for the Xbox 360 and lets players experience events in the Halo universe 20 year prior to the events of Halo: Combat Evolved.

Halo Wars is available for an estimated price of R699 while the Limited Collector’s Edition will cost R799.

We haven’t been able to tear ourselves away from the game long enough to write the review yet, but expect it by Monday. Until then satisfy your curiosity with our previous coverage.
