Earlier this year Take 2 released Grand Theft Auto: Chinatown Wars on the DS to great critical acclaim but lackluster sales. And so GTA comes back to the PSP, its handheld home, in the form of Chinatown Wars PSP – an upscaled port of the DS game. It’s not different enough an experience from the DS one that I can recommend buying it as well as that one, but for those who missed it I can recommend Chinatown Wars on the PSP with the same qualifications as before: this is a morally bankrupt game in which you take on the role of a hired thug doing any and every crime you can think of. But it’s also fun.

Rockstar Games has deemed it necessary to unleash a flood of new screenshots from their upcoming PSP game, GTA: Chinatown Wars, the new and improved port of the DS version of the title, now featuring enhanced visuals and all-new story missions.
GTA: Chinatown Wars releases for the PSP as a physical retail disc and digital download on October 20th in North America, and October 23rd in Europe.

GTA: Chinatown Wars is coming soon to Sony’s PSP (October 20th to be exact), after the DS version of the game met with a softer reception in the market than Rockstar was probably hoping for earlier in the year.
The move from the DS to the PSP comes with a few advantages, including upscaled widescreen graphics, enhanced lighting and animation, as well as all-new story missions over and above those found in the DS version.
Does the PSP edition of GTA: Chinatown Wars look a whole lot better than the game’s appearance on the DS? Find out for yourself with a batch of newly released PSP screenshots below:
Mega developers Rockstar recently announced that their latest Grand Theft Auto title, GTA: Chinatown Wars, will be releasing at the end of October for the PSP, as both a retail (disc-based) UMD and digital download via the PlayStation Network.
Chinatown Wars released earlier this year on the Nintendo DS to great critical acclaim, but worryingly low initial sales.
While Rockstar themselves said that they weren’t worried about the sales of the title on the traditionally family/kid-friendly handheld, and that the game would eventually ‘earn out,’ the worse than expected performance at retail was thought to point to a market trend specific to the DS (and the Wii) in that overtly ‘adult themed’ games would be rejected by the majority of users.
Rockstar have just announced that their previously Nintendo DS exclusive Grand Theft Auto title, GTA: Chinatown Wars, will be heading to Sony’s upcoming PSPgo as a downloadable title. Rockstar chief Sam Houser said in a press release:
Well, citizens of the US are now able to get their grubby mitts on the diminutive DS version of Grand Theft Auto, Chinatown Wars, but by the look of these videos, there’s nothing small about the game.
Featuring a full cast of characters, an entire city to explore, all kinds of crazy missions, as well as the usual assortment of vehicles and weapons to help you ‘navigate’ the game’s obstacles, Chinatown Wars may even put the first few entries to the Grand Theft Auto series to shame.
Chinatown Wars also makes extensive use of the DS’s stylus, as you can see in the following videos. First, though, you can check out the game’s opening cinema to get you all excited, like:
Grand Theft Auto: Chinatown Wars is out in the US and is launching this Friday (March 20th) in Europe. Watch the rest of the videos for Chinatown Wars below:
Here’s another punchy little Grand Theft Auto: Chinatown Wars video, this time shedding some light on the ‘dealing’ and ‘delivery’ aspects of the diminutive DS version of GTA.
This iteration’s protagonist, Huang Lee, is sent out on a mission by his uncle, Wu ‘Kenny’ Lee, as the shady undertakings of the game are revealed. It seems as though you’ll be using that stylus a lot in this game… watch the video below:
In this ‘Hacking and Sniper Rifle’ gameplay video from Grand Theft Auto: Chinatown Wars on the DS, you get to have a look at some… hacking and sniper rifle gameplay, which just happen to be abilities featured in the game. What a crazy world!
It seems you’ll be using the DS stylus for a lot of the trickier aspects that Chinatown Wars has to offer, assembling your sniper rifle before use, mashing a keypad to hack an electronic lock, and hotwiring a hijacked car, all using the handheld console’s touchscreen capabilities. Watch below:
Grand Theft Auto: Chinatown Wars is out this month, on March 17th in the US and March 20th in Europe.
Rockstar have released a couple of videos revealing the look and feel of Grand Theft Auto: China Town Wars in motion… needless to say, the presentation in this DS entry to the series is amazing.
The first trailer will give you a good idea of how much effort Rockstar are putting into this title, with an introduction that rivals any of the previous GTA games. Watch below:
The second video gives you a glimpse of the game proper, as the player hotwires a car using the DS stylus. Pretty cool. Watch below:

While it’s pure speculation until confirmed, the details of a Grand Theft Auto game, Chinatown Wars, have been revealed in the latest edition of Nintendo Power. While Chinatown Wars was confirmed to be in development during Nintendo’s press event at E3 earlier this year and in a press release, no further concrete details have been announced. Sam Houser, co-founder of Rockstar Games said of the game:
“This is a game that will deliver a rich, fast-paced and intense ‘Grand Theft Auto’ experience that will be truly unique to Nintendo’s handheld platform. Rockstar Leeds, along with the team at Rockstar North, has built upon a decade of progressive design on Grand Theft Auto, and has created something fundamentally fresh and immersive.”
Grand Theft Auto: Chinatown Wars is expected to be available on the Nintendo DS in North America and Europe later this year. Click ahead to get the unverified details…
