The past month has been a quiet time for the PS Vita with no real new releases to speak of. Thankfully the handheld’s release schedule looks a tad healthier for May and June, with games like Mortal Kombat, Resistance: Burning Skies and Gravity Rush all set to make an appearance during this period.
Gravity Rush has been in development for four years, making it one of the most ambitious and expensive PS Vita projects announced so far. Shortly after development on the game began, Japan Studio presented a short concept movie internally at Sony Computer Entertainment for a project with the working title “Gravité” - French for ‘gravity’.
Gravity Rush has received rave reviews since its Japanese debut last month so PS Vita owners are understandably hyped for its worldwide release in June. This open-world action-adventure stars a young female protagonist called Kat and features a unique art style and gravity-shifting gameplay mechanics that make great use of the Vita’s motion control functionality.
For months I’ve been waiting in anticipation for a Gravity Rush release date announcement and am happy to report that we now know when this PS Vita exclusive is due out in the US, UK and Europe.
Many of you will be picking up a PS Vita this week so naturally you’ll want to check out a few demos to see what your new system is capable of.
There’ll be a few demos available on the US PlayStation Store this week including ones for Rayman Origins, Hustle Kings, Unit 13 and FIFA Soccer.
There are two new entries on this week’s Media Create Software chart. Konami’s latest Suikoden game for the PSP took top honours with 61 784 copies sold during its opening week, while Gravity Rush snagged second spot to become the highest ranked PS Vita title we’ve seen so far.
Gravity Rush (known as Gravity Daze in Japan) is the latest brainchild of Silent Hill creator Keiichirō Toyama. The game features an innovative gravity-shifting mechanic which is essential for both combat and navigation.
The PS Vita’s launch lineup is one of the longest and most impressive we’ve ever seen, but many of the titles on offer are either ports or handheld adaptations of games already available on PS3.
Gravity Rush, however, represents something fresh and exciting for seasoned gamers. This action-adventure title from SCE Japan Studio was originally scheduled to be released during the PS Vita’s ‘launch window’ in the US, but has since been pushed forward to launch day - February 22nd.
