The buzz around Gran Turismo 5 has died down somewhat since it released late last year, with many racing fans turning their attention to the imminent arrival of Forza Motorsport 4. Many people (including myself) had been wondering how Sony planned to counteract this threat to GT5’s preeminent position in the racing genre, and we now have our answer - a massive patch and four lots of DLC.

What has the team at Polyphony Digital been working on since the release of Gran Turismo 5? Patches. Enormous patches that fulfilled the original vision of a game launch that didn’t represent the end of the journey, but the beginning.

The team has also been working on downloadable content, it seems.

Sony was hit hard earlier this year by the PlayStation Network hack and the resulting backlash against the PlayStation brand. Despite this, 2011 has been a bumper year for the company in terms of a number of triple-A exclusives being released for PlayStation 3. We’ve already enjoyed the likes of LittleBigPlanet 2 and inFAMOUS 2, but what about the games we’ve still got to look forward to this year such as Uncharted 3, Resistance 3 and Journey?

Sony will undoubtedly have a large presence at gamescom, and I know my fellow contributors can’t wait to see what the company shows off at the event. I put a list together of some of my hoped-for highlights and here it is for your reading pleasure.

GT5 Box Art Small When Gran Turismo 5 was finally released at the tail-end of 2010, it was generally agreed that the realistic racing sim was overall ‘excellent,’ but there was a lot of confusion about just how excellent the game may have been, and in what grade of ‘excellence’ it could be pigeonholed.

“This game is amazing,” wrote series fans and racing aficionados alike, “but it’s not as amazing as it should have been! I hate it! But it’s amazing! But it’s terrible! But I’ve played dozens of hours already!”

Very confusing.

The Waiting Game - Demon's Souls BadgeThere comes a moment in every gamer’s life when we sit back with satisfaction as the credits roll and think to ourselves: “That’s got to be one of the best games I’ve ever played.”

Unfortunately, just like you eventually get hungry after digging in at an all-you-can-eat buffet, that sense of satisfaction fades with time and an appetite for more gaming goodness gradually takes shape in your belly. The one thing that can get your adrenaline pumping and intensify that hunger is the announcement of a sequel or addition to this game series you’ve irrevocably pledged yourself to.

Think about how ecstatic Call of Duty fans get when a new game in the series is announced - they know it’s coming (one a year without exception it would seem) but that inevitability doesn’t seem to dampen their enthusiasm one iota.

I recently experienced this ‘hunger’ after completing Demon’s Souls for the second time. Although I have encountered people online (a PSN friend from Singapore springs to mind) who get endless hours of entertainment from this title’s cooperative and Player VS Player (PvP) features, I found myself craving new worlds to explore and new behemoths to take down (with a little help from fellow demon hunters of course).

It looks as though Gran Turismo and Polyphony Digital head Kazunori Yamauchi has made good on his Twitter promises, as he and his team have recently delivered a new update for Gran Turismo 5 that improves and fixes a few areas of the game.

Gran Turismo 5 recently released around the world to an overwhelmingly positive response, and while some of you were a bit disappointed with a few aspects here and there, there’s no question that Sony Computer Entertainment and Polyphony Digital’s PlayStation 3-exclusive racing simulator is a visual tour de force!

Gran Turismo 5 VS Forza Motorsport 3

But… I seem to recall another racing simulator game that released, was it last year? In October? And exclusively on Xbox 360? Oh yes, of course! Forza Motorsport 3!

Dang, that was a great game!

GT5 Box Art Small According to Japanese gamers, no titles other than Gran Turismo 5 mattered last week as Sony’s realistic racing simulator debuted in the country to an incredible reception, selling nearly 431 000 copies in only a few days following its release on PlayStation 3.

So… maybe that’s a little bit of a lie. Japanese gamers also cared about the release of Super Robot Wars L for the DS, as that game sold 129 000 copies during its debut week on sale – still a grand achievement!

It was always going to be impossible for Gran Turismo 5 to live up to the expectations of grandeur placed upon it: Perfectly modelled cars, true-to-life racing physics, visible damage and car degradation, online, an engaging career mode, day/night cycles, weather… these are just some of the features talked about before the game was out. Polyphony Digital, meanwhile, quietly ignored the raging storm of internet debate and comparisons and went about creating their own vision. And it is a thing of wonder.

Some stuff is odd, some parts are a little under-baked, some bits are frustrating. But the core components of the game - the driving, the courses and the cars - are breathtaking at times, each in their own way. After 25 hours of play, I feel I’m just scratching the surface of the content of this game – it’s truly immense! I fully intend to put a lot more hours in, and I’ll consider revisiting this review once I’ve done that because at this stage it’s very hard to really say much more than I’m loving it as much as I hoped to!
