This week’s U.S. PlayStation Store update includes no less than seven new downloadable games for PS3, a couple of demos, tons of add-on content and some worthwhile freebies for Plus members.
The big game on this week’s list has to be Mortal Kombat Arcade Kollection ($9.99). This is the first time PSN users can get these three arcade classics in one bundle, and MK fanatics are going to relish being able to earn trophies and climb leaderboards while playing their favourite franchise.
The highlights for me this week include two PlayStation Plus exclusives - the God of War: Origins Collection demo and the Assassin’s Creed: Revelations Multiplayer Beta. The latter will only be released on September 2nd so unfortunately I can’t comment on its quality at this point.
It’s not very often that a game remastered in HD receives a demo on the PlayStation Network so the release of one for God of War: Origins Collection is something to get excited about.
The demo will be available on the North American PS Store a little later today (around 11pm South African time), although it’s exclusive to Plus members until September 6th. It will feature a gameplay scenario from God of War: Ghost of Sparta.
The Tester is a free reality show exclusive to the PlayStation Network. Contestants compete in challenges which test various skills such as dexterity, creativity, communication and the ability to work in a team - attributes which a game tester needs to possess in order to be a success at their job.
Season 3 of the popular show was recently announced via the PlayStation Blog and the prize the winner takes home this time around should give any PS fanboy shivers down their spine - a “production job” at Santa Monica Studios (the Sony-owned developers behind the awesome God of War series).
The announcement of Kratos’ appearance in next year’s Mortal Kombat had already been made earlier this week, but now we get to see everybody’s favourite god of war in a Mortal Kombat environment proper with this latest trailer for the brutal fighter.
The CG video was aired during the Spike Video Game Awards, and contains an epic fight between Scorpion and Sub-Zero, as supreme Mortal Kombat bad dude, Shao Kahn, watches with amusement.
Before long, though, Kratos crashes the party. Watch this awesome trailer below - not to be missed!
Kratos, undisputable ‘god’ of all things ‘war’ in the videogame world, may just see an appearance in the PlayStation 3 version of next year’s Mortal Kombat reboot as a story character, if a report on consumer site StickSkills is anything to go by.
According to the site, and after reading over the January issue of the Official PlayStation Magazine, it’s being reported that God of War protagonist (and all-round furious dude) Kratos will show up in Ed Boon and NetherRealm Studios’ Mortal Kombat reboot.
Remember that two-in-one Blu-ray disc compilation that released for the PlayStation 3 late last year in the US, and earlier this year in Europe and South Africa, featuring high-definition, remastered versions of both God of War I and God of War II? You know the one. They called it, the ‘God of War Collection.’
Yeah, you remember, don’t you?
Well, it seems as though Sony Computer Entertainment want to make it more convenient for gamers to get their hands on this excellent compilation of the action titles, so you’ll be able to more easily remember it in the future, because it’s been announced that the God of War Collection will become available to purchase and download via the PlayStation Store early next month.
For the longest time, it’s been rumoured and speculated that former Sony game designer David Jaffe, he of God of War fame, was working on a full, high definition, next generation version of the explosive car wrecking and racing game, Twisted Metal.
It made sense as Jaffe is the creator of the series after all, and leaked information from his home studio (as he works with Eat Sleep Play in Utah) revealed that he’s currently working on a game that includes cars and action of some sort.
Now, however, Jaffe has finally put these rumours to bed, posting on his Twitter account that he is in fact not working on a Twister Metal game, despite previously being coy about the subject. From the tweet:
Sony Computer Entertainment has officially announced a price and release month for the God of War Collection in South Africa, allowing PS3 gamers in the country to get their hands on the remastered, high-definition versions of both the original God of War and God of War II on a single Blu-ray disc.
OK, don’t get me wrong. The new, remastered versions of the original God of War and God of War II look amazing, especially in comparison to their first appearances on the PlayStation 2, but even with a new coat of high definition paint, they still pale in comparison to next year’s God of War III.
Take this video from the upcoming God of War Collection for example:
Looks great, right? How about this next one?
Sony has announced that the God of War Collection has gone gold and will be available for the PS3 across North America on the 17th of November.
The God of War Collection includes both God of War and God of War II in HD on a single Blu-ray disc. Of course the new HD versions will also include lots of trophies. God of War III Design Director Todd Papy explains: “Other than all the visual improvements that we added to the God of War Collection, the most exciting part for me was the opportunity to go back and add in full trophy support for both games.”
The God of War Collection, which includes both God of War and God of War II, will be available across North America this November.
This is the games debut on the PS3, and they are being remastered in full HD resolution on a single Blu-ray Disc for the occasion. Both games were originally developed for the PS2 but will now include 2X anti-aliased graphics running at 60 frames per second for a smoother gameplay experience on the PS3. Of course trophy support will also be included, a first for the God of War series.
Earlier in the week Sony revealed that God of War I and II would be coming to the PS3 in a Blu-ray Disc Compilation. The publisher announced that the God of War Collection would be available this holiday season.
Now Sony has announced that the God of War Collection won’t be available in Europe this year. It’s likely that it will only arrive on European shelves in 2010, while American gamers will still be able to enjoy it before the end of the year. Perhaps the publisher will launch it alongside God of War III in Europe, which arrives in March 2010.
Sony of America has announced that God of War I and II will be coming to the PS3 in a Blu-ray Disc Compilation this holiday season.
Both games in the God of War Collection will be remastered to run at 60 frames per second with anti-aliased graphics in full 1280 x 720 resolution and will include PlayStation Network trophies. The Collection will retail at $39.99.
As part of a two-book deal, God of War will be making its way to the pages of a novel, the first of which will be written by author Matthew Stover (writer of Star Wars New Jedi Order: Traitor, Star Wars: Shatterpoint, and Star Wars: Revenge of the Sith) and published by Del Rey in the US.
The first book is set to release in March of 2010, just in time for God of War III’s release on PS3. From the press release:
Sony unveiled a new Deep Red PSP colour back in February. Bundled in the God of War PSP Entertainment Pack, the limited edition Deep Red PSP has Kratos’ image silkscreened on the back.
The wait is over for God of War fans as the new bundle is now available across North America. The God of War Entertainment Pack includes the Deep Red PSP, a copy of God of War: Chains of Olympus, the popular movie Superbad on UMD as well as a PSN voucher to download Syphon Filter: Combat Ops. It retails at $199.99.
