It seems Xbox 360, PC, Wii and DS owners in Europe will have to wait just a little longer to get their Ghostbusters fix, after Atari has unfortunately pushed the release date of Ghostbusters: The Video Game for those consoles back to November 6th in the region, after it was expected to release in late October.

After months of rumours about whether or not it was in development, a surprise reveal, the loss of a publisher, a new publishing partner and release date delay, and then a last-minute switch in publishing arrangements, Ghostbusters: The Video Game has finally been released, and if you’re a true-blue Ghostbusters fan, the wait has definitely been worth it.

From the excellent story, humorous dialogue (written by original Ghostbusters Harold Ramis and Dan Aykroyd), pitch perfect voice acting (voiced by original Ghostbusters cast) and great pacing (just pushing you to the limits, and then rewarding you with some great cinematics and the afore-mentioned voice acting), this third-person action adventure game provides what is probably as good a Ghostbusters experience you can get, interactive or otherwise.

As a piece of interactive entertainment (i.e. a game), Ghostbusters: The Video Game also delivers a quality performance that, while not as pitch perfect as the acting and writing, and containing a few oversights that the developers should have ironed out, is only a few steps away from being the quintessential Ghostbusters game that future, similarly themed games can look up to.

Courtesy of his “friends at Terminal Reality,” developers of Ghostbusters: The Video Game, Major Nelson has put up some sound files from the game that would be perfect for short, sonic alerts, such as a cellphone ringtone, an online messenger alert or perhaps something else.

The files are available in two flavours – either the original master audio files in WAV (3.5 MB), or the compressed MP3 format (316 KB) – in two different .zip files.

In what is a more indicative state of sales, Prototype (sales down 20%) has taken the top spot on the UK Software Sales Chart this week, now being allowed a full week at retail to claim No. 1, as opposed to last week when it had only been on sale for two days, leading to it being pipped by The Sims 3.

Sales for Prototype were unevenly split between its platforms, as 61% of sales were recorded on Xbox 360, 36% on PS3 and 3% on PC.

Gametrailers have released a comparison video featuring a head-to-head look at Ghostbusters: The Video Game on both the PlayStation 3 and the Xbox 360.

As usual, the differences between the game on the different platforms are extremely slight, although the Xbox 360 version does seem a little sharper. Will you even notice when you’re caught in the middle of busting some ghosts, though?

For those of you who watched the original Ghostbusters movies, you’ll remember Janine Melnitz, the ghost busting crew’s secretary. Well, she’ll be making an appearance in the upcoming game, voiced by the original actress, Annie Potts.

It’s been announced that Sony (as opposed to Atari) will be publishing the upcoming Ghostbusters: The Video Game in PAL regions, and will result in a timed exclusive release of the game on the PlayStation 3 and PlayStation 2 on June 19th, while the PSP, Xbox 360, Wii and DS versions of the game will follow a little later. Vice President of Licensing-Interactive for Sony Pictures Consumer Products Inc., Mark Caplan said:

“With our colleagues at Sony Computer Entertainment Europe publishing Ghostbusters: The Video Game, we are thrilled by the dynamic new Ghostbusters game. We think it will have tremendous appeal to gamers and we can’t think of a better way to celebrate the 25th anniversary of this beloved franchise.

“With this superb game launching alongside the Blu-ray release, we will reach existing fans and the next generation, bringing them all into the irresistible Ghostbusters universe.”

Good for PlayStation owners, but other console owners will get theirs soon enough.

Even though the game is only releasing in mid-June, you can watch the opening cinematic for Ghostbusters: The Video Game right now! Lucky!

The cinematic shows the basic set-up behind the game, revealing why, in fact, the Ghostbusters once again need to be roused from their firehouse to fend off the paranormal goings-on. Watch below:

Aw yeah, Ghostbusters: The Video Game, only this trailer is for the Wii version of the game. No man left behind, and all that.

Ghostbusters on the Wii is looking to be a different game altogether, as far as the visuals go, with much more stylised characters, colours and environments, and it looks as though the art direction is actually working out, so you don’t really notice the lower polygon counts and less detailed textures… oops.

The game also obviously takes advantage of the WiiMote and Nunchuck setup, which is hopefully pulled off well.

Watch the debut trailer for Ghostbusters: The Video Game on the Wii below, and make up your own dang mind:
