What’s that? You don’t have either the original Gears of War or Gears of War 2? And you’ve never considered buying the ‘All Fronts Collection’ add-on, even if you had those awesome action games?!
C’mon in from the cold, son – have I got a bargain for you!
In February, you’ll be able to purchase the ‘Gears of War Triple Pack,’ a collection of gaming amusements that includes Gears of War, Gears of War 2 and Gears of War 2: All Fronts Collection.
What does this mean?
The results of Epic and Microsoft’s Gears of War 3 campaign are in, and depending on the kind of virtual (or real) shirt you bought, you’ve gone and sealed the fate of one Clayton Carmine, as well as help to raise $150 000 for the Child’s Play charity.
What on earth am I yammering on about? Let’s start over.
Last week it was announced that you, the gaming audience, would be able to vote on the fate of one Clayton Carmine, a new character to be introduced in Epic’s upcoming Gears of War 3, and brother to the two other Carmine soldiers who met their grizzly ends in the original Gears of War and Gears of War 2.
Starting today, July 29th, you can begin swaying the decision of Epic and convince the developer to either kill off this third Carmine brother in a similarly ghastly way to his siblings, or spare his life and let him live to see the end of Gears of War 3.
Epic Games and the Child’s Play charity are calling on Xbox gamers to help decide the fate of one Clayton Carmine, the third Carmine brother to be introduced to the Gears of War universe when Gears of War 3 releases in April next year.
If you’ve played previous Gears of War games, you’ll know that the Carmine brothers don’t really ‘handle’ combat situations very well, and end up meeting a grizzly death in both the original Gears of War, as well as Gears of War 2. While these deaths serve a purpose (teaching players about this or that dangerous element in the games), they’re no less unfortunate.
Now, you and your fellow Xbox community will be able to decide the fate of Clayton Carmine in Gears of War 3 simply by purchasing one of two Xbox Avatar items via Xbox LIVE Marketplace.
It’s being reported that Epic Games developer Cliff Bleszinski made comments to the effect that Japan can’t keep up with the US technically.
Apparently the remarks were made by Bleszinski to Xbox World 360 magazine, and apparently he said “Part of the problem is, technically, Japan just can’t keep up with the US” when asked if Epic Games had plans to expand into Japan, Korea and China in the future.
We’ve already seen how devoted Capcom is to ensuring Lost Planet 2 receives character guest appearances from other game franchises– the game will be getting Monster Hunter and Gears of War multiplayer characters to play as, after all.
A new announcement, however, has revealed that as of the end of June, that character roster will be expanded to include two Helghast enemy characters from the hit PlayStation 3 first-person shooter, Killzone 2.
That’s right – the Helghast Assault and Helghast Scout troops are making their way into Lost Planet 2 as free downloadable content (DLC) at the end of June. Take a look at the released screenshots and excellent reveal trailer to shake your disbelief below:
That Cliff Bleszinski has been right in the middle of the videogame news spotlight for the past week for a variety of reasons, but instead of focussing on whether or not Gears of War 3 will indeed see a release in April next year, or thinking about what game the designer will end up revealing on the Late Night With Jimmy Fallon show, why don’t we take a super interesting tour of Epic Games, and see what kind of cool, awesome stuff the studio has lying around its offices:
Even though we’re still waiting for the officially official announcement from Epic, reports regarding Gears of War 3’s gameplay and mission details have already begun to surface, with talk of underwater missions, new additions to gameplay that will change the series’ cover mechanic, and a mech suit.
These details come from Edge Online, so they’re not to be sneezed at, and were provided by a mysterious ‘US publishing source’ – the same source who let the word out that Gears of War 3 would release in April of 2011.
This week’s Xbox LIVE Deal of the Week concerns price reductions on a variety of Gears of War Xbox LIVE Avatar items, which includes the COG Armour and Helmet for males and females, because the COG are all about equality.
Go get yourself some Avatar armour now!
Earlier in the week Capcom took many a gamer by surprise with their announcement that Gears of War protagonists, Marcus and Dom, would be available as customisable characters in the Xbox 360 version of Lost Planet 2.
Gears of War designer Cliff Bleszinksi explains how the crossover happened: “They [Capcom] contacted us about the cameo and we said ‘heck yeah.’ We’re mutual fans of each other’s work and crossovers are darned cool so we sent over the Marcus and Dom models for implementation.”
Yesterday during Capcom’s Xbox event the publisher announced that Gears of Wars protagonists, Marcus Fenix and Dominic Santiago, would be appearing in the upcoming action adventure game Lost Planet 2.
Now Capcom has confirmed that Marcus and Dom will be customisable characters in the game. See the two of them in action below, taking on a large Akrid in the snow in this Gears of War/Lost Planet crossover trailer:
During Capcom’s Xbox event earlier today, it was announced that Gears of War protagonists, Marcus Fenix and Dominic Santiago, would be appearing in the publisher’s upcoming action adventure game Lost Planet 2, most likely as exclusive downloadable content, or specially included character skins for cooperative play.
Well, that’s what we thought anyway…
The latest addition to Xbox LIVE’s Games on Demand service arrives in the form of Banjo Kazooie: Nuts and Bolts, a game that proved to be extremely divisive amongst the gaming community with its focus on an excellent vehicle-building aspect, but requiring players to slog through monotonous singleplayer challenges in order to build increasingly interesting vehicles.
What does the write-up have to say for itself?
“The heroic bear and bird return at last to defend Spiral Mountain from their nemesis Gruntilda. Groundbreaking vehicular platforming awaits in wild new worlds packed with features and faces old and new. Build awe-inspiring vehicles and tackle the Jiggy challenges in any way you see fit!”
If you need a bit of a refresher course, you can watch a trailer for the game below, or read El33tonline’s review of Banjo Kazooie: Nuts and Bolts.
Cliff Bleszinski has been working in game development for quite some time, starting out with the release of his first game in 1991, an adventure game by the name of ‘The Palace of Deceit: Dragon’s Plight,’ before moving onto designing games that are arguably more well known, such as Jazz Jackrabbit, Unreal, Unreal Tournament, and then Gears of War 1 and 2.
Throughout this time, Bleszinski has played a ton of videogames made by other developers, some of which have even had an affect on the games he’s worked on, as well as found a special place in his heart.
Speaking to Industry Gamers, Bleszinski has listed his top ten (well, twelve) favourite games, which are as follows:
In an interview with Develop, creative director behind the development of Epic’s Gears of War series, Cliff Bleszinski, has revealed his thoughts on where the future of shooters may lie, and it may or may not surprise you what those thoughts are. Bleszinski said:
“I had a conversation with Harvey Smith – one of the lead designers on Deus Ex – and said to him the future of shooters is RPGs. He said he completely agreed.”
Bleszinski has long been a fan of the critical and commercial smash hit, Bioshock, (“There was a time when the industry warmed down, and then Bioshock came along,” says Bleszinski) which incorporated both first-person shooting action with an RPG-lite system to mix up the gameplay.
