It’s very easy to make a game frightening by intelligently placing cheap scares along the way to get a few jumps out of players, but it’s a lot more difficult to flood an experience with extreme tension and horror to add impact to those cheap scares.

Things like ambient sounds, moody lighting and atmospheric environments all contribute to the tension of a game, which ultimately lead to moments of catharsis to allow you to let off some steam and release that tension… before starting all over again.

No wonder gamers are such a twitchy lot!

“All games should have robot reinforcements from the moon base.”

A very wise piece of advice indeed, delivered by Gearbox Software’s Steve Gibson, who was at gamescom 2011 to demonstrate Borderlands 2 to a room packed with an audience twitching with anticipation. It was a piece of advice thinly veiled as a tongue-in-cheek challenge to other game developers – put more mechanical creatures in your games that are able to be called in from the moon base!

I tend to agree. All games should have robot reinforcements from the moon base, and in Gearbox Software’s Borderlands 2, not only are there lots of creatures and insane enemies to dispatch, there are also lots of robots!

SEGA, Gearbox Software and developer WayForward have today jointly announced another way for you to dive into the creepy, acid-spitting world of ‘Alien’ with a new DS game, Aliens: Infestation.

Billed as an action-packed platform shooter “with a hardcore, retro feel,” Aliens: Infestation aims to feature a deep storyline, too, that will change depending on how you play the game.

We were all expecting Ubisoft and Gearbox Software to announce a new entry to the long-running Brothers in Arms franchise at E3 this year, but I doubt any of us outside of those companies could have predicted just what form the latest iteration of the shooter series would take.

It’s taken a peculiar form, is what I’m saying.

Duke Nukem Hazard Sign One of the signature weapons found in Duke Nukem 3D was the shrink ray – a gun that was able to reduce your enemies down to size in seconds flat, allowing you to squish them flat with the bottom of your boot.

Duke Nukem Forever will also feature this classic weapon from first-person days of yore, and by the looks of a new trailer for the game, Duke himself will be going on an adventure as a diminutive action hero after he’s exposed to the effects of the weapon.

Grand times ensue:
