Fable III got a new showing at the Game Developers Conference this year, and with it, a new set of screenshots were released by Microsoft and developers Lionhead to reveal one of the sections from the game – what looks to be an abandoned mine haunted by ghostly soldiers. Isn’t that always the way?

Lionhead’s Peter Molyneux, as usual, spilled a few more beans about the project, including the reveal that non other than British comedian and actor John Cleese will play the role of your in-game butler, in addition to the news that, in some form or another, Fable III will include support for the social messaging system, Twitter, as Molyneux says:

Game Developers Conference 2010 LogoWhile there are going to be plenty of highlights for both game developers and the videogame press at large to talk about at this month’s Game Developers Conference (GDC) in San Francisco, event director Meggan Scavio has confirmed that there will be no keynotes delivered by the big three console manufacturers, Microsoft, Nintendo or Sony, in an effort to move the conference away from “announcing things” and towards “[focussing] on developers.”

This year at GDC, the biggest headline event will be a keynote delivered by industry legend and game designer Sid Meier, as opposed to any new hardware announcements by Sony or Nintendo, if Scavio can help it.

Speaking with GamesIndustry.biz, Scavio said:

Videogame industry legend, programming technology guru and id Software (DOOM, Quake) co-founder John Carmack is set to receive a Lifetime Achievement Award at the upcoming Game Developers Choice Awards for his outstanding contributions to the art and science of games, following in the footsteps of prolific industry stars Sid Meier, Shigeru Miyamoto, Hideo Kojima and Richard Garriott.

John CarmackThe Lifetime Achievement Award recognises “the career and achievements of developers who have made an indelible impact on the craft of game development,” and with Carmack’s more than two decade history of making games, working on breakthrough technology and his contributions to popularising the first-person shooter genre with titles such as Wolfenstein, DOOM and Quake, as well as his efforts in continually pushing the bounds of graphics technology, you could say he’s made an “indelible impact” on game development.

Event Director of the Game Developers Conference Meggan Scavio said of Carmack and the award:
