Game Developers Conference organiser, Think Services, has announced that last week’s GDC held at the Moscone Convention Center in San Francisco saw attendance numbers in excess of 17 000 game industry professionals. Event director Meggan Scavio said:
“The success of this past week in San Francisco proves the resilience of the games industry.
“It is a testament to the spirit of our more than 20 year old conference and community, and evidence of video games’ continued evolution into a mainstream form of entertainment, that the various constituents of the industry were able come together at GDC as they did [last] year.”
Attendance figures for 2009’s GDC were slightly down from 2008’s numbers, but managed to exceed those of 2007’s event.
Also announced were the dates for GDC 2010, taking place from Tuesday, March 9 to Saturday, March 13, 2010, changing from the event’s usual ‘Monday through Friday’ schedule, which Scavio explains is as a result of a booking-related issue.

Kojima’s keynote, entitled “Solid Game Design: Making the ‘Impossible’ Possible,” will focus on “conquering various development obstacles with creative game design, using the driving game design philosophies behind the Metal Gear series as reference.” This keynote address will apparently be the first time Kojima will attend the GDC. Event director of the GDC, Meggan Scavio said:
“The Game Developers Conference has invited Hideo Kojima to keynote every year for as long as I can remember, so we couldn’t be more excited that, at long last, he feels that it is time for him to address the game development community.
“The anticipation is already huge to see how one of the community’s most revered and elusive creators will inspire attendees to further push the limits of game development.”
The Game Developers Conference is the largest professional industry event dedicated to the creation of games of all types on all platforms, providing a central forum for learning, inspiration and networking in the videogames industry. This year, the GDC takes place over March 23-27 at the Moscone Convention Center in San Francisco.
