gamescom, a massive annual gaming event in Germany, has grown from strength to strength and last year boasted attendance numbers of 275 000 people with 557 exhibitors spread out across the mammoth, cavernous halls of the Koelnmesse in Cologne.
That was gamescom 2011. gamescom 2012 is going to be even bigger.
The El33t team is back on South African soil, and to celebrate here’s a brief look at what we’ll be up to this weekend.
Sorry for the radio silence on last week’s Pre-W33kend post, but things have been a little crazy lately with four members of the team in Germany covering gamescom. The good news is that you can enjoy some awesome previews this weekend, with even more goodies to come next week (pictures! swag!)…
The PSP has undergone many hardware revisions and cosmetic changes since it launched in 2005. The best version so far has to be the PSP-3000 which has a built-in microphone and a radically improved screen compared to previous models. The PSPgo has a neat, compact form factor but it can’t play UMDs and the screen is 0.5 inches smaller (diagonally) than other PSP models.
At gamescom last week Sony announced a new model of PSP - the E1000. Priced at just €100, it will go on sale across PAL territories this November. The budget model lacks certain features which some gamers might miss - Wi-Fi, stereo speakers and a built-in microphone. The new model is also a bit bulkier than the PSP-3000 - weighing 223g as opposed to the 3000’s 189g.
Tennis games can be a tremendous amount of fun due to their pick-up-and-play nature and the intense satisfaction you get from outwitting your opponent (AI or otherwise) on the virtual court. They also lend themselves naturally to four-player multiplayer and a closely-contested doubles match is definitely going to be a memorable gaming experience. As one of the oldest genres in gaming, tennis titles have had a long time to evolve since Pong mesmerised the world back in 1972.
Virtua Tennis 4 hopes to revolutionise the way we play tennis games thanks to the PS Vita’s unique feature set. You can opt to play it in the standard way or take advantage of touch controls to steer you player around the court and unleash your desired shot.
Konami recently lifted the lid on Silent Hill: Book of Memories at gamescom, finally filling us in on what exactly this PS Vita game is going to be about.
In a radical departure from previous Silent Hill games, Book of Memories is focused on co-op multiplayer (up to four players) from a top-down perspective. You’ll encounter well-known monsters from the series along the way, and the survival horror action will take place in environments which bear more than a passing resemblance to the Silent Hill games of old.
It’s not uncommon practice for game publishers to offer various incentives to ensure consumers pre-order their product. EA are taking it one step further by warning people that there’ll only be a set number of retail and digital copies of Star Wars: The Old Republic at launch, and once this supply is exhausted it could take up to a month before the game becomes available again.
EA’s rationale for this counter-intuitive practice is to guarantee that their servers are not overloaded at launch, ensuring that the first adopters of this highly anticipated MMO have the smoothest experience possible from the get-go.
It’s been over two years since we’ve had a proper Resident Evil game so anticipation is high for Capcom’s latest story-driven RE title - Revelations. The game will be set between the events of RE4 and RE5, and revolves around fan favourites Chris Redfield and Jill Valentine.
Revelations is scheduled for release early next year and is exclusive to 3DS for the time being. There have been rumours circulating around the internet that it will also come to PS Vita but nothing is confirmed as yet.
The 3DS has been gaining a fair amount of momentum in the past few weeks following a global price cut and increasing support from developers. A bevy of well-known franchises are headed to 3DS this year including Metal Gear Solid, FIFA, Sonic and Rayman so it comes as no surprise that Namco Bandai are also climbing aboard by bringing the Tekken franchise to the system.
The last couple of days have been incredibly exciting for PS Vita enthusiasts as new details and trailers for the system emerge from gamescom. During the Sony press conference last night a couple of new titles were announced for Vita including the awesome-looking Resistance: Burning Skies. However, there was no mention of one of the most anticipated Vita titles - Uncharted: Golden Abyss.
[Update] Following Sony’s media briefing in Cologne today, the news of a PS3 price cut has been confirmed - get the news here. [End of Update]
There have been rumours circulating in the gaming press for a couple of months now that a significant PlayStation 3 price cut would be announced at gamescom, and today’s PS3 price update on online retailer Amazon UK’s website would seem to suggest that the rumours are true.
One of the best things about the FIFA series is that every year we get a chance to try it out in demo form a couple of weeks before it releases. FIFA 12 is no different and today a new trailer for the game emerged from gamescom detailing this much anticipated demo date.
Fourteen years ago Soul Blade (also known as Soul Edge) was released on PlayStation. The game was an instant classic thanks to its incredible graphics (for the time) and lightning-fast, weapon-based gameplay. Namco had provided us with a viable alternative to Tekken and the company has never looked back - the franchise has sold millions of units and the development of the seventh instalment in the series - Soul Calibur V - is well underway.
Microsoft is holding their annual Play Day in Cologne tomorrow. Although we don’t have official confirmation on what titles will be on show yet, we can make a pretty good list of what we’d like to see.

This time of year is awash with high profile gaming events. It’s just a couple of days until gamescom in Cologne, Germany and then mid-September will mark another frenzied Tokyo Game Show in Japan.
If you don’t possess the resources to fly around the world taking all these glorious sights and sounds (not to mention games) in, then at least you can still attend some of them from the comfort of your living room thanks to PlayStation Home.
