What’s it going to take?! What supernatural act in the world of gaming will be able to shift Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 from its position of power at the top of Xbox LIVE’s Activity ranking, and allow another game – any game – to claim the No. 1 spot on the list?

As you may have guessed, Modern Warfare 2 was still the most played game on Xbox LIVE over the last week, as the combined efforts of Halo 3: ODST, the Halo: Reach multiplayer beta and Halo 3 could not tilt the balance of power, and return the world to the way it was before ‘The Dark Presence’ appeared… on November 10th 2009.

Xbox LIVE Logo SmallerAs for best selling Xbox LIVE Arcade games, Zombie Apocalypse tops that particular chart, while the combined sales of Game Room games sits at No. 2 on the list, and Toy Soldiers appears at No. 3.

The list of top selling Xbox Indie Games is ruled by Baby Maker Extreme at No. 1, with Avatar Onslaught and I MAED A GAM3 W1TH Z0MB1ES!!!1 at No. 2 and No. 3 respectively.

This week, we’ve also got access to a list of the most played Games For Windows (GFW) games, as Grand Theft Auto IV, Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War II and Colin McRae : Dirt 2 appear at the top of that ranking.

The full global list of top played Xbox Live games, top selling XBLA games and Xbox Indie Games follows below, all based on unique users and full versions purchased (now including Games for Windows games):

After all these weeks, and some extremely tough competition, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 has simply shrugged off the pretenders to the throne, including Battlefield: Bad Company 2 and the two-and-a-half-year old Halo 3, and remains the No. 1 most played Xbox 360 game on Xbox LIVE.

Xbox LIVE Logo SmallerWho, or indeed what, can stop Modern Warfare 2 now? It’s looking like only the full release of Halo: Reach (it’s doubtful that the multiplayer beta would be able to pull enough numbers) at the end of the year will be able to upset this ‘King of LIVE.’

The top selling Xbox LIVE Arcade title this week is the newly released Final Fight: Double Impact, followed by games for Game Room at No. 2 and Toy Soldiers at No. 3.

As for best selling Xbox Indie Games, an old favourite, I MAED A GAM3 W1TH Z0MB1ES!!!1, shows up at No. 1, while Yet Another Zombie Defense settles in at No. 2 and Baby Maker Extreme sits at No. 3.

Thanks to the release of the Stimulus Package downloadable content (DLC) for Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2, the game has managed to easily stay ahead of the pack for another week and remain the most played Xbox 360 game on Xbox LIVE for the past week.

Xbox LIVE Logo SmallerIt is doubtful, however, whether or not the new DLC for Modern Warfare 2 would have made a difference to the popularity rankings this week considering that Halo 3, a game that is around two and a half years old, is this week in second place ahead of heavyweight contender Battlefield: Bad Company 2, despite the release of new DLC for that game, too.

Is the excitement surrounding this year’s Halo: Reach spiking Halo 3 players back into action? Will Bad Company 2 ever reach the No. 1 spot on the activity chart? We’ll have to wait and see.

That Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2! What a rascal!

Not content to dominate the Xbox LIVE Activity ranking for weeks and months on end, and even with incredibly stiff competition in the form of Battlefield: Bad Company 2, Modern Warfare 2 is still able to remain the No. 1 most played Xbox 360 game on Xbox LIVE.

Xbox LIVE Logo SmallerWith the release of the Stimulus Package downloadable content (DLC) this week, and the Bad Company 2’s own map-pack, that battle for the top spot is only going to intensify in the coming weeks, but I have a sneaking suspicion that Modern Warfare 2 is going to keep that No. 1 position for the foreseeable future. Just a hunch.

Somehow, Xbox LIVE’s Game Room is at the top of the top of the best sellers list of Xbox LIVE Arcade games, even though the base download is free (unless the chart is counting games purchases), as last week’s No. 1, Perfect Dark, sits at No. 2 and Toy Soldiers contents itself with No. 3

New Xbox Indie Games The Impossible Avatar Getaway sits at No. 1 as the best selling game on this list, as Avatar Showdown and I MAED A GAM3 W1TH Z0MB1ES!!!1 hover at No. 2 and No. 3 respectively.

Update It seems Xbox LIVE users are having some problems trying to download Game Room from the service, but Major Nelson assures us that the problems are being investigated. End of Update

About two months ago now, Microsoft announced and detailed an initiative called Game Room for Xbox LIVE Arcade that would enable gamers to travel back in time and play some classic arcade and home console games from the 80’s, right from the comfort of your own Xbox 360 and PC.

LIVE Game Room

These games would be perfectly emulated to match their original counterparts, with no further graphical additions, but with the back-end technology you would expect from an Xbox LIVE Arcade title, such as leaderboards, Achievements (in a limited capacity), social functions and some multiplayer abilities thrown into the mix (local, not online at the moment).
