Following on from the Independent Games Festival Awards on Wednesday evening last week, the ceremony rolled right into the prestigious Game Developers Choice Awards, an event that aims to recognise the very best accomplishments in the world of videogames.
The games chosen to receive an award at the Game Developers Choice Awards (and development teams behind these titles) this year included Red Dead Redemption from Rockstar, Minecraft from Mojang (continuing its winning ways from the IGF Awards), Mass Effect 2 and Limbo – but only one game could be crowned ‘Game of the Year’…
The full list of winners at this year’s Game Developers Choice Awards is as follows:
At the Independent Games Festival Awards ceremony in San Francisco last week, seven different independently created games received awards for their respective achievements, and recognition for the teams that made them.
Last week before the show, we asked you to ‘Hold Thumbs for QCF Design’ and it turns out our confidence in the Cape Town-based indie developer wasn’t misplaced - the team was amongst the winners during the IGF Awards and walked away with the ‘Excellence in Design’ award during the event for Desktop Dungeons.
Are you holding thumbs for QCF Design?
Just a little later today (or very early tomorrow morning in South Africa), Cape Town-based indie game developer QCF Design will be attending the Independent Games Festival Awards in San Francisco, and the three-person team just so happens to be nominated for no less than two awards during the ceremony – the ‘Excellence in Design’ award and none other than the ultra prestigious Seumus McNally Grand Prize!
QCF Design, an independent game developer based in Cape Town, South Africa, was recently nominated for awards in two categories for this year’s Independent Games Festival Awards taking place during the Game Developers Conference in San Francisco this week.
What earned the three-person team these two nods? A ‘little’ game by the name of Desktop Dungeons, a rapid, short-session Roguelike dungeon-crawler that became something of an overnight sensation in indie game circles and indie developer circles alike.
The folks at PopCap Games also liked it a whole bunch.
[Update] I’ve managed to grab a ghostly image from the countdown site of a soldier of some description, although I can’t quite make out who it could be. Makarov himself? Check it out below. [End of Update]
A new countdown clock website has just been discovered that’s currently ticking down to… something happening in just under five days.
It just so happens that the Game Developers Conference kicks off in just under five days, too.
At this year’s Game Developers Choice Awards, not only will a batch of games and development studios receive awards to recognise their contributions to the medium of videogames and interactive entertainment, but an absolute veteran and luminary of the craft will receive the highest honour his peers could attempt to bestow upon him.
During the 11th annual Game Developers Choice Award, none other than Peter Molyneux will receive a Lifetime Achievement Award, following in the footsteps of similarly legendary recipients including John Carmack, Sid Meier, Hideo Kojima, Richard Garriott and Shigeru Miyamoto.
The 11th annual Game Developers Choice Awards will take place on March 2nd this year during the 2011 Game Developers Conference in San Francisco, and over the course of the awards ceremony dozens of games and thousands of game developers will be recognised for their work on the very best videogames of 2010.
What makes the Game Developers Choice Awards special is that it’s a peer-based industry ceremony, and has for years been known as an event ‘by developers, for developers.’ If your work is recognised with an award, you can be sure of your accomplishment!
Every year, for the past twelve years, the annual Independent Games Festival Awards have taken place in concert with the Game Developers Conference, a gathering of professional game developers from all around the world.
This year, the thirteenth annual IGF Awards will take place to recognise the work and accomplishments of some of the best independent game developers, who are all currently chipping away at their grand game designs to eventually share a finished, fully polished product with the world.
Finalists for the awards ceremony have been announced, and there are some heavy-hitters in amongst the categories which comprise ‘Excellence in Visual Art,’ ‘Excellence in Design,’ and the ultra-prestigious ‘Seumas McNally Grand Prize.’
Included in the nominees list is the Cape Town, South Africa-based QCF Design for the team’s fast-paced Roguelike dungeon-crawling RPG, Desktop Dungeons.
Here is the full list of nominees in each category:
The 2010 Game Developers Conference (GDC) began on Tuesday March 9th and wrapped up on Saturday March 13th, and over these five days the Moscone Convention Center in San Francisco (which played host to the event) saw 18 250 videogame industry professionals stalk the halls and corridors, a new attendance record for the annual event.

Last night the world’s best videogames and game developers were honoured with a shower of awards at the 10th annual Game Developers Choice Awards, held during the Game Developers Conference every year, the only official awards ceremony created for developers and voted on by developers.
This year’s big winner was Uncharted 2, which walked away with a total of five nods, while id Software co-founder and Technical Director John Carmack was honoured with a Lifetime Achievement Award.
Event director of the Game Developers Conference Meggan Scavio said of the awards process this year:
Crystal Dynamics has announced that a new entry to the continued adventures of Lara Croft will appear later this year in the form of Lara Croft and the Guardian of Light, and will be available as a digital download.
General Manager of Crystal Dynamics Darrell Gallagher said of the announcement:
While there are going to be plenty of highlights for both game developers and the videogame press at large to talk about at this month’s Game Developers Conference (GDC) in San Francisco, event director Meggan Scavio has confirmed that there will be no keynotes delivered by the big three console manufacturers, Microsoft, Nintendo or Sony, in an effort to move the conference away from “announcing things” and towards “[focussing] on developers.”
This year at GDC, the biggest headline event will be a keynote delivered by industry legend and game designer Sid Meier, as opposed to any new hardware announcements by Sony or Nintendo, if Scavio can help it.
Speaking with GamesIndustry.biz, Scavio said:
Videogame industry legend, programming technology guru and id Software (DOOM, Quake) co-founder John Carmack is set to receive a Lifetime Achievement Award at the upcoming Game Developers Choice Awards for his outstanding contributions to the art and science of games, following in the footsteps of prolific industry stars Sid Meier, Shigeru Miyamoto, Hideo Kojima and Richard Garriott.
The Lifetime Achievement Award recognises “the career and achievements of developers who have made an indelible impact on the craft of game development,” and with Carmack’s more than two decade history of making games, working on breakthrough technology and his contributions to popularising the first-person shooter genre with titles such as Wolfenstein, DOOM and Quake, as well as his efforts in continually pushing the bounds of graphics technology, you could say he’s made an “indelible impact” on game development.
Event Director of the Game Developers Conference Meggan Scavio said of Carmack and the award:
Crytek, independent game developers based in Germany and creators of the Far Cry franchise and PC-only title, Crysis, are set to unveil their new console-ready engine, CryEngine 3, at the Game Developers Conference (GDC) in San Francisco later this month.
CryEngine 3 is a new direction for the company, having previously focussed their efforts on PC development with CryEngine 1 and 2, while the new engine will include support for Xbox 360 and PS3, as well as DirectX 9 and 10 for the PC. Crytek CEO Cevat Yerli commented:
“Our complete game engine solution enables realtime development, ensures teams are able to maximise their own creativity, saves budget and creates greater gaming experiences. Also with our solution developers can start working on their next generation games today.”
Crytek’s business team will be demonstrating the new engine at GDC this year, as well as conducting meetings with potential licensees, as CryEngine 3 is most likely to appear even more appealing to game developers and publishers looking for an all-in-one development solution for future titles, rather than being hamstrung to the PC only.
It’s been announced that, at this year’s Game Developers Conference, the creator of the Metal Gear series, Hideo Kojima, will received a Lifetime Achievement Award at the Game Developer’s Choice Awards.
Kojima, who is to make his debut GDC appearance as well as deliver the 2009 GDC keynote address, will receive the Lifetime Achievement Award in recognition of his career and achievements over the last twenty years of his time in the industry, and his contributions to the growth of game development. Event director of the Game Developers Conference, Meggan Scavio said:
“For years, Hideo Kojima’s contributions to game development have broken new ground and inspired the community to think about creating games in never-before-imagined ways.
“From giving birth to the stealth action game genre to showing game makers how to interact with their players by breaking the ‘fourth wall,’ Kojima’s achievements make him an obvious choice for an award that in previous years has gone to luminaries including Sid Meier, Shigeru Miyamoto, Richard Garriott, Eugene Jarvis, Mark Cerny, Gunpei Yokoi, Yuji Naka and Will Wright.”
The 2009 Game Developers Conference will run from March 23rd to March 27th at the Moscone Convention Center in San Francisco.
