Xbox 360 Console (Smaller) Thanks to information from Tom, we now know that the latest system update for Xbox 360 has gone live and is available to download.

But what does this new update actually do?

PlayStation 3 ConsoleThe past five days have been momentous for both Sony Computer Entertainment (SCE) and Rockstar Games – one company brought a gigantic service network back to life, while the other released a spectacular, seven-years-in-the-making action adventure title.

Little did they know, however, that their triumphs would be connected to (and intertwined with) the tribulations of “a very small number” of PlayStation 3 owners, and the companies have jointly announced that neither the latest system update for the console, nor LA Noire itself, are the roots of reported overheating problems.

Let’s rummage around in some half-truths and indulge in some whole lies for a while, shall we?

Xbox 360 ConsoleMicrosoft recently put out a call to all Xbox 360 owners (based in the US) to help the publisher test the next system update for the console, in the annual “Xbox 360 System Update Preview program.”

Because the company has probably already received all of the testers that they can handle (and the fact that the preview is limited to the US), this isn’t the real news.

The real news is that this update is set to include a new disc format for Xbox 360, and the preview programme will help Microsoft test and prepare for this new functionality.

PlayStation Network Logo The latest firmware update for PlayStation 3, version 3.60, is now live and available to download the next time you connect to the PlayStation Network.

While a rather large ‘to-do’ was made over the fact that, with this update, PlayStation Plus subscribers would be able to save their games online and access those saves anywhere in the world from any PS3, not much else has been added with the firmware. Unless you value the battery life of your controller. And security.
