Through stealth upgrades provided via various firmware updates, Sony has managed to reduce the amount of system memory that the PlayStation 3’s operating system (OS) uses at runtime, whittling the OS’s footprint down from 120MB to 50MB.
This essentially gives PS3 developers another 70MB for their games that would otherwise have been off-limits, which will be useful for applications such as temporarily storing extra data or higher resolution data, making for (ever so slightly) better looking and even (ever so slightly) faster running PS3 games.
Patrick Seybold of Sony Computer Entertainment America (SCEA) confirmed the news to videogame consumer site Joystiq, saying:
Sony has announced that although firmware update 3.15 was released as an optional update in early December, it has now become a mandatory update.
In a post on SCEA’s official blog Eric Lempel, Director of PlayStation Network Operations, explained that “the update improves system stability during use of some PlayStation 3 software” in addition to the features that were revealed at the end of last year, outlined below.
The next firmware update for the PS3, version 3.15, will be coming “very soon,” according to a recent post up on the European PlayStation Blog, and will include the ability to play PSP minis via your PS3, as well as a facility to transfer your current PS3 data to another entirely different PS3 console. From the post:
“We launched minis for PSP back in October but from the 17th December you will be able to enjoy these bite size games on your PS3 as well as your PSP.
“This firmware update allows the minis emulator to work on PS3 and we are working on getting the majority of the current minis ready for the PS3 from the 17th December.”
The post also assures us that even if we’ve already bought a PSP mini game, we’ll still be able to play it through our PS3s when the firmware update hits.
The new PlayStation 3 firmware update, version 3.10, has gone live, which means PS3 owners now have access to the new Facebook integration feature, slick photo browsing interface and the refined friends list presentation.
In addition, there are a host of other features, updates and changes Sony has added to the PS3 with update 3.10, some of which are country-specific. You can browse through a list of these additions below:
The next firmware update for your PSP, 6.20, is now live and available to download, and adds a bit of functionality that owners of the handheld will definitely appreciate, such as support for the Digital Comics Reader, as well as extended video and photo functionality.

After Facebook was rumoured, and then confirmed, to be heading to the PlayStation Network over the last week, network operations director Eric Lempel has announced via game consumer site 1Up that the world’s most popular social networking website and service will be arriving on the PlayStation 3 today.
The application will become available with Sony’s 3.10 PS3 update today, and will allow gamers to share their Trophy updates and game specific information via the application’s news feed, amongst other features.
Update 3.10 will also overhaul the way the PS3’s photo organisation works, and refine the presentation of friends lists.

Sony has given PS3 gamers a sneak preview of what they can expect from the next PS3 firmware update. The update boasts a few new features but the most significant among them is the incorporation of Facebook.
Firmware update v3.10 will allow gamers to link their PlayStation Network account to their Facebook account, which will give the option to automatically update the Facebook News Feed with both Trophy and PlayStation Store activity.
According to apparently leaked images showing the online service active on a PlayStation 3 cross-media bar (XMB), Facebook could very well be on the way to PS3 users, following in the footsteps of Microsoft’s planned integration of the social networking site.
Not only that, but if the rumour is true, you’ll also be able to change your gamercard colours and have access to a more efficient method for browsing through your photos by the time the next firmware update rolls around.
Sony has announced that a new firmware update for the PS3 is now available.
V3.01 is an optional update that “improves system stability during use of some PlayStation 3 format software.” Although the update doesn’t seem to add any new features, it will “fix the issues that some users have experienced with Uncharted: Drake’s Fortune.”
Happy downloading!

Sony has announced that a new firmware update for the PSP will be available soon.
V6.00 will be a minor update but will add a security patch and rename ‘Network Update’ to ‘System Update.’ The update will also add a few new colours to the Theme Settings, enabling PSP owners to customize their XMB (XrossMediaBar).

After months of rumours swirling around the internet, Sony has finally unveiled its new PS3, which is 32% smaller, 36% lighter and $100 less expensive than the currently available model, while requiring 34% less power during operation.
The new PS3 will cost $299 in North America, €299 in European territories and ¥29 980 in Japan, and will include a 120GB hard drive. The price of all current model PS3s will be brought down to match these prices as of tomorrow.
The new slim model PS3 will go on sale in the first week of September.

Additionally, the latest firmware update for the PS3, 3.0, was announced, which includes new features and feature tweaks, such as animated themes, direct links to TV services and more. Look below for a full list and descriptions of each feature:
Attention all Wii owners: your console’s firmware has been updated to version 4.1 in anticipation of Wii Sports Resort’s impending release around the world on July 24th in the UK and Europe, and July 26th in the US.
As Wii Sports Resort has already been released in Japan, the firmware update was actually released to fix a bug in the game, so now the rest of the world can breathe easy, safe in the knowledge that their Wii Sports Resort experience won’t be tampered with in the same way… as long as you download the Wii firmware update, that is.
