This week’s Media Create software chart is led by Square Enix’s latest blockbuster - Final Fantasy Type-0. This massive RPG spread over two UMDs has incredible production values for a handheld title (as anyone who’s played the demo will tell you) and a huge cast of characters to interact with. The game sold an impressive 472 253 retail copies in its opening week, and I’m sure the digital version on the PlayStation Store fared just as well with the UMD-less, backwards compatible PS Vita just around the corner.

Final Fantasy Type-0 CG A Japanese demo for Final Fantasy Type-0 was released last week on August 11th, and negative feedback on various aspects of it has prompted director Hajime Tabata to put up a video response on the Square Enix Members Twitter page reassuring fans that their complaints will be taken to heart.

The top two gripes were directed at the camera and Phantoma system used in the game. Like many PSP titles, the camera is controlled with the D-pad which means you have to take your left thumb off the analog stick every time you want to change your view. This is an awkward and annoying practice and can be remedied by assigning horizontal camera controls to the L and R buttons on the top of the PSP (something which the demo doesn’t let you do). Kingdom Hearts: Birth by Sleep employs this method and it feels far more comfortable and natural than D-pad camera control does.

The free sample will include four missions and seven characters, along with a couple of tweaks to the one that’s currently on display at the Square Enix demo event in Odaiba.

It seems like just the other day when it was a sure bet that any Final Fantasy game released in Japan would make it to the West sooner or later. Even spin-offs like Chocobo Racing and Ehrgeiz were published in North America and Europe without hesitation.

Unfortunately times have changed, and we’re now facing a situation where even big-budget JRPGs like The Last Story and Pandora’s Tower for Wii face an uphill battle getting localised into English and published in the West.
