It’s always nice to watch trailers that feature actual in-game footage from a title (so we can witness the graphical fidelity of a given game for ourselves) rather than some mocked-up, pre-rendered video presentation, but once in a while it’s OK to treat yourself to a CG trailer, provided that it’s so impressive that it knocks you off of your seat.
So here’s a word of warning: Before watching the below-appearing CG trailer for Square Enix’s Final Fantasy XIV online RPG… hold onto your seat:
Square Enix has announced that, following the crushing and eradication of a few “critical bugs,” and an unfortunate delay, the Final Fantasy XIV open beta test will be able to begin tomorrow.
The ‘Brain Bug’ won’t be pleased to hear this.
It seems Square Enix has been sending out mixed messages about its massively multiplayer online game, Final Fantasy XIV, and the open beta fans have been anticipating.
Last week, the company tweeted that the open beta for Final Fantasy XIV would commence today, on August 31st at 19:00 PDT, followed a second later by another tweet (for European gamers) that the open beta would begin on September 1st at 2:00 GMT.
They even hoped to see “everyone participate!”
Square Enix has just gone and revealed the release date for the publisher’s upcoming massively multiplayer online RPG, Final Fantasy XIV, announcing that eager PC gamers will be able to get their hands on the title in late September, while PS3 owners will have to wait until March 2011.
In addition, the PC system specifications for Final Fantasy XIV have also been unveiled, with plans of a new PC beta also coming to light.
Graphically impressive videogames are a dime a dozen nowadays, and while some games push that visual envelope into the stratosphere (Crysis 2, Uncharted 2, RAGE, Killzone 2 etc.), most electronic entertainments at least pass the bare minimum requirements to keep players engaged long enough for the gameplay to take over… or not.
Graphically impressive massively multiplayer online games (MMOG), on the other hand, are much more rare. Some games go with a stylised visual aesthetic to keep everything looking good and fresh for years at a time (World of Warcraft being a prime example). Other games try to ‘wow’ us out the gate with realistic graphics, and end up looking dated a year later (Age of Conan, we’re looking at you).
Sony Computer Entertainment is giving gamers a bit of an extra incentive to pick up Final Fantasy XIII (which launched today) on the PS3 today, as it’s been announced on the US PlayStation Blog that if you choose to do so, you’ll not only get a secret in-game item for Final Fantasy XIV, but your chances of entering the beta for that game will increase by… a margin of sorts. From the post:
Square Enix has announced that the upcoming beta test for Final Fantasy XIV, the publisher’s next massively multiplayer online RPG (MMORPG), will begin this month, starting with a closed beta seeded with a selection of invited players.
After Microsoft and Nintendo made some impressive announcements at their respective E3 2009 press conferences, all eyes were on Sony to deliver equally noteworthy revelations, with many rumours (and confirmed rumours) floating around in the form of a new project from Kojima Productions, the PSP Go and further showings of their announced and unannounced games.
