News on the street is that Sucker Punch’s popular videogame inFAMOUS is heading to the big screen.
According to the Hollywood Reporter, screenwriter Sheldon Turner (he who wrote the screenplay for The Longest Yard remake and co-wrote Up in the Air) approached Sony Pictures with a plan to turn the videogame into a feature film, a deal reportedly worth seven figures. The studio’s sister company Sony Computer Entertainment published the game and the studio is said to be negotiating a deal for the rights to the game.
The Resident Evil movies are Sony Picture’s second most profitable movie franchise. No surprise then that the fourth film in the Resident Evil franchise is on the way. Titled Resident Evil: Afterlife and touted to be a series reboot, the film is scheduled to be hitting the big screen on the 17th of September 2010, in 3D no less!
Early reports indicate that Paul W. Anderson will be writing, directing and producing Resident Evil: Afterlife, which will have the “largest budget of all the films so far.” Anderson is no stranger to the Resident Evil world, he wrote and directed the first Resident Evil movie before moving on to write but not direct the two sequels, Apocalypse and Extinction.
Last week reports surfaced that Naughty Dog’s popular action adventure videogame Uncharted would be heading to the big screen. Since then the publisher has confirmed that Nathan Drake is indeed heading to Hollywood.
Sony Computer Entertainment and Columbia Pictures have signed a deal for a movie adaption of Uncharted: Drake’s Fortune, which will be produced by Avi Arad, Charles Rovan and Alex Gartner.
Nathan Drake, he who is famous for witty one-liners and the mystifying half-tuck, is headed to the big screen.
According to The Hollywood Reporter Columbia is developing Naughty Dog’s popular action adventure videogame, Uncharted: Drake’s Fortune, into a feature film. Kyle Ward will be tasked with writing the script while Avi Arad, Charles Roven and Alex Gartner will be in charge of producing duties.
Ward is no stranger to game-to-film adaptations, having written Kane & Lynch (which stars Bruce Willis) for Lionsgate and working on Hitman 2 with 20th Century Fox.
Various sources indicate that Shadow of the Colossus is being made into a film. Kevin Misher is said to be producing the feature which is under development at Sony Pictures Entertainment (sibling to the game’s publisher Sony Computer Entertainment) while Justin Marks will be in charge of the script (who also penned Street Fighter: The Legend of Chun-Li).
Shadow of the Colossus was released across North America for the PS2 in 2005 and quickly became something of a cult hit among videogamers. The game comes from the makers of ICO and sees players assuming the role of a young warrior named Wander who is desperate to save the love of his life, Mono. Armed with only a sword, bow and your trusty steed Agro, you are plunged into this quest to conquer 16 Colossi in order to save the young woman.
Capcom’s Lost Planet could be headed to the big screen. Voice actor and screenwriter David Hayter hinted at the possibility of a Lost Planet movie at the recent AX08.
David Hayter (famous for voicing Solid Snake in the Metal Gear Solid series and for writing the screenplay for X-Men) conducted a Q & A session at AX08, revealing two new projects that he is working on. The first was a new action/adventure film that he will probably be directing and the second was a screenplay for the film adaptation of Lost Planet.
According to a report by IGN, Hayter has been conducting preliminary talks to draft the movie tie-in since June. Hayter commented “It’s not entirely confirmed yet. But we are just closing the deal with Warner Bros. for me to adapt Lost Planet.”
Contractual agreements bar Hayter from revealing more about the project but he did say this about his approach to adapting games to film.
“There is gap in Hollywood between people who write good movies and those who appreciate good video games. I’m fortunate enough to be in both worlds. For myself, I try to make an effort to take the essence of the game, keep as much of that as possible, and still put it into a proper film structure.”
Here’s what he had to say about what he will consider before writing Lost Planet for the big screen. “When they gave me Lost Planet to play to see if I wanted to write the movie, I looked at the environments, I looked at the vital suits, the armor, the creatures, and watched the story. While I couldn’t take those scenes and put them up verbatim, I can appreciate the core of the story and what it is about the character’s journeys that grab people.”
Len Wiseman will be directing New Line’s film adaptation of Microsoft and Epic Games’ video game Gears of War.
This according to Variety, who also report that Chris Morgan (The Fast and the Furious: Tokyo Drift, Wanted) will be taking over the screenplay writing responsibilities from Stuart Beattie. Gears Lead Designer Cliff Bleszinski will act as executive producer and creative consultant.
Rumours that Wiseman would be heading up the project began after Gears of War was featured in his recent film Live Free or Die Hard. Wiseman will rework the story with Morgan, with whom he is collaborating on sci-fi action thriller Shell Game.
Wiseman is best known for co-writing and directing the first two Underworld films and is currently producing the third installment in the Underworld franchise, Underworld 3: The Rise of the Lycans. Incidentally Wiseman is married to Kate Beckinsdale who starred in the first two Underworld films.
The Gears of War film was initially expected to arrive in cinemas in summer 2009 although further development on the project is likely to delay that date. Gears of War 2 will be available for the Xbox 360 in November.
“It’s like with our games, you can have it right or have it right now,” said Epic Games head Mark Rein. “We want to get it right. There’s no timetable for us. We just want to make as good a movie as we can, and we think (Wiseman’s) the guy who will do it.”
