EL33TONLINE: News tag archive: fear3
With the release of the original FEAR back in 2005, I encountered an extraordinarily visceral and high-action first-person shooter with a very mature, dark and creepy setting that made use of a gameplay mechanic that was, at the time, still relatively unexplored in the world of videogames - ‘bullet time’ or slow-motion action.
While I only ever dabbled in the FEAR franchise entries following the original (expansion packs, console ports and FEAR 2), I’m very happy to return to the horror-themed series after all this time with FEAR 3 because it retains everything I enjoyed about that first game while adding a huge range of new cooperative and multiplayer features that extend the experience well beyond what’s visible on the surface.

It’s been another incredibly busy week here at El33tonline, not only because of a good, constant stream of videogame news, a few new reviews, an in-depth preview, and a host of competitions, but we also announced our attendance at rAge this year!
That’s right! We’ll be at booth 28 of rAge 2011 in Johannesburg, taking place at the Coca-Cola Dome from September 30th through October 2nd - if you’re in the area, be sure to stop by to take part in a few activities, giveaways and competitions, but if you won’t be there, we’ve got you covered.
All of this excitement and content tends to wear a person out, you know? So the team at El33tonline will be relaxing in the only way we know how - by playing games! Find out what members of the team will be busy with this weekend, and be sure to let us know what you’re playing, too:
The end of the week can only mean one thing here at El33tonline - a brand new edition of El33t’s Pre-W33kend Post!
We’re falling into the depths of Winter here and that always makes for the best gaming weather, which is a good thing, too, because all of us here at El33tonline have tons of gaming to be done!
After bringing a few awesome competitions to a close this week, we introduced a few new ones for you to take part in, but… wait until next week when we’ve got a few new and exciting contests for you to enter - don’t miss them!
That’s next week, though. What’s the team at El33tonline up to this weekend? Find out below and let us know what games you’ll be playing:
There’s no stopping Zumba Fitness!
The game has once again claimed the No. 1 spot on Chart Track’s UK Software Sales listing this week, with a massive 33% increase in sales over the week previous.
Interestingly, Chart Track says that this past week represents the second highest sales week for Zumba Fitness, and outsold games appearing in the next three positions combined. Chart Track goes on to explain that the game’s best sales week earlier this year only allowed it to reach No. 2 on the chart, after Crysis 2.
What are those next three games that Zumba Fitness managed to outstrip in terms of unit sales this week?
If you’re a fan of gobs of horror and dollops of creep in your games, then you’ve certainly come to the right week, but if you’re more into the destruction of gigantic robotic creatures, or you enjoy playing mini-games with your friends, then the games releasing today in South Africa, the UK and Europe have you covered!
Releasing around the world this week on PlayStation 3, PC and Xbox 360, it’s fitting that FEAR 3 has recently received a suitably creepy and horrific launch trailer to accompany the game onto retail shelves, with the Marilyn Manson track ‘Four Rusted Horses’ to provide the mood:
This month is packed to the bursting brim with exciting, important, explosive and otherwise amazing videogames, and may just represent the best month of gaming we’ve enjoyed so far in 2011.
We’ve rounded up a list of titles releasing over the next few weeks of June, and members of El33tonline talk about the games they’re most looking forward to getting their hands on from now until the month’s dying breath.
Did we mention June is packed with games? Is it ever:
After receiving that horrific and impressive FEAR 3 press kit the other day, we became anxious about absorbing every last piece of information on the game that we could, so luckily there were a few gameplay and feature trailers waiting in the wings to satiate this desire.
Discover one of FEAR 3’s multiplayer modes, Soul King, in a bloody and brutal video, and find out about the game’s ‘lethal scoring’ system which will pit your first-person killing skills against online players around the world:
Today, something quite disturbing arrived at my door. Something creepy… and even a little scary. At first, I couldn’t look past the dashes of bloody fingerprints and streaks of crimson gore smeared on it, but after a cursory glance my interest was well and truly piqued.
I couldn’t stop examining it and flicking through its contents, trying to put together the clues – if they even were clues – to get to the bottom of its mystery.
Today, I received a family photo album, and it’s horrific. And entirely awesome.
So here we are again with news of a FEAR 3 delay.
FEAR 3 from Warner Bros. Interactive and Day 1 Studios was originally due for release at the end of 2010, but was subsequently delayed into ‘early 2011.’ This was followed up with an official release date window… and then another delay with a new release date of May 27th in Europe.
Now, we’ve learned that FEAR 3 will in fact only arrive on retail shelves at the tail-end of June around the world…
The story of FEAR is surprisingly complicated, what with prototypical soldiers, a ghastly ‘mother’ figure, sibling rivalry, psychic connections and hellish visions – and that’s all before a single shot is fired in an attempt to destroy super soldiers, demons and other monstrosities in stylish slow-motion combat.
Luckily, the folks over at Warner Bros. Interactive and Day 1 Studios have released a handy video to summarise the story of FEAR, and consequently FEAR 3, as the demonic Paxton Fettel narrates the tale of his brother, his mother… and blood:
Now that FEAR 3 has an official release date (for the UK, at least), Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment and Day 1 Studios are finally able to start ramping up towards May 27th – the day we’re immersed in blood, viscera and fear!
To start getting us ready for this terroriffic (…) shooter, the publisher/developer pair have unleashed a brand new story trailer revealing further narrative elements behind the game, encased in brutal in-game footage:
After a series of unfortunate delays, FEAR 3 from Warner Bros. Interactive and Day 1 Studios has been given a new official release date for the UK, at which time all of us will be cowering in terror while sat in front of our PlayStation 3/Xbox 360/PC (as applicable).
Warner Bros. Entertainment has released a new cinematic trailer for FEAR 3, and it’s sure to raise at least a few hairs on the back of your neck.
The new trailer was released yesterday to celebrate the Ides of March, the day on which Julius Caesar was betrayed and murdered by his closest friends. It shows an in-game cinematic where brothers Paxton Fettel and Point Man recount their violent and hostile past, giving readers a little insight into the game as the “two are haunted by themes of betrayal and family ties as the game progresses.”
From a Warner Bros. Entertainment press release:
“For Valentine’s Day, Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment has announced that Paxton Fettel is available as a playable character in the single player campaign and will be unlocked at the end of each level after first playing through a level as Point Man.”
For… Valentine’s Day? You want to tell people on Valentine’s Day that you’ll be able to play as a psychopathic, demonic monster who is able to destroy his enemies with a mere thought?
Well, while you’re doing that, Warner, we’ll be over here enjoying (READ: Grimacing At) a new set of FEAR 3 screenshots containing overdoses of crimson explosions, while watching a ghastly (READ: Tasty) new trailer revealing some of Fettel’s horrible (READ: Awesome) powers:
