Xbox Live LogoThe great lineup of recent, current generation games available on Xbox LIVE’s Games on Demand service is growing rapidly, and has been strengthened further by the release of Far Cry 2 and Battlefield 2: Modern Combat onto the network.

Far Cry 2 is an excellent, open-world first-person shooter most unlike any released before, taking you to the wonderfully varied environments of Africa on a mission to stop a dangerous arms dealer, and return the war-torn region to an era of peace, as you “run, swim, drive, fly, shoot, fight and smash your way through over 50km² of open world. Beware though, sometimes the hunter can become the hunted.”

And how!

In a post on the Ubisoft forums, community manager Atmon has confirmed to Far Cry 2 fans that a new ‘hardcore’ mode is on the way for the multiplayer portion of the game, which will be available in the next set of patches.

According to Atmon, the new hardcore setting will increase the amount of damage for all weapons, all weapons will have been rebalanced (both in normal and hardcore mode) and enemy names will disappear after the spawning invincibility period is over (while invincibility is shown as a shield over a player’s head).

Additionally, you will be able to tweak spawning time (but not spawning rate) and a new search option will become available in multiplayer to search for games currently playing in hardcore mode.

These changes probably mean a lot more to a hardcore Far Cry 2 multiplayer fan than most, but they seem like good decisions.

We quite enjoyed Far Cry 2, so if you haven’t yet had a look at the game yet, read our review to find out what you’re missing.

Far Cry 2 is a game of massive proportions - an enormous African environment, dozens of weapons, tons of missions, hundreds of secrets, hundreds of enemies and a handful of vehicles to help traverse that vast, vast landscape, all wrapped up in a smattering of ambition for an open-world, free-roaming first person shooter where you are given the truest amount of freedom any game has ever realised… in the top five, at least. There are problems, of course, such as incapable AI and poor story exposition, but do the minor complaints drown out the major praise?

“The holiday quarter is off to a solid start with the successful launch of Far Cry 2,” said Yves Guillemot, chief executive officer at Ubisoft. “The game is well on track to achieve our expectations for the year.”

Set in the African savannah, Far Cry 2 promises to impress with its open world environment, non-scripted enemy AI, destructible environments, dynamic weather effects and multiplayer game play.

Far Cry 2, the not-sequel to the island-traversing adventure, starts with a clean slate, allowing players to take control of an all new hero, somewhere in Africa.

Big features include the ability to take on challenges however you feel, as well as a dynamic story where key characters are able to be killed, while the story trundles on. The environments are pretty dynamic as well, letting players take advantage of the wind to spread fire through dry brush and using the vast terrain to outsmart enemies.

Here are some screenshots to give you an idea of how good it looks on PC, Xbox 360 and PS3, releasing either late this year or early next year.
