EA Sports LogoEA has officially announced that a full-blown sequel to the publisher’s EA Sports Active fitness product (don’t call it a game!) is in development, and will release on PlayStation 3, Wii, iPhone and iPod Touch (no mention of Xbox 360) in the Fall of this year.

EA’s financial results for the first quarter of the fiscal year are looking a little droopy, as losses of $234 million (up $95 million last year) dragged the company’s performance down.

Electronic Arts LogoEA CEO John Riccitiello says, however, that their quarterly net revenue of $644 million is “better than expected,” even though that number is down from $804 million during the same period last year:

“Good execution delivered better-than-expected financial results in the first quarter,” said Riccitiello.

Driving this performance were the releases of The Sims 3 (with 3.7 million units sold), EA Sports Active (1.8 million units sold) and Fight Night Round 4.

The Sims 3 was notably the top selling game at retail in both North America and Europe for the quarter combined, while EA Sports Active is now officially EA’s most successful Wii game, helping EA to a 21% and 13% share of that console’s market in North America and Europe respectively.

Peter MooreEA’s Peter Moore has issued a challenge to President Barack Obama to try his hand at EA Sports Active.

This follows Obama’s remarks at the American Medical Association where he commented “”It means going for a run or hitting the gym, and raising our children to step away from the video games and spend more time playing outside.”

Although Moore agreed with the President that it’s important to “get off the couch and get active,” he also challenged “the President and his family to put their Wii to good use and fire up the 30-Day Challenge with EA Sports Active” which is a “game that even the President may not want to step away from.”

For the second week in a row, primarily PC title The Sims 3 has taken the top spot on the UK Software Sales Chart, sitting pretty at No. 1 despite a 48% drop in sales.

The open-world actioner, Prototype, manages to claim No. 2 during its debut week on sale, while last week’s No. 2, Red Faction: Guerrilla (sales down 31%), moves down to No. 2. Wii Fit (sales up 18%) makes a mini-resurgence, climbing to No. 5 from No. 4 this week, but UFC 2009: Undisputed (sales down 36%) slides down two places from No. 3 last week to No. 5.

EA has taken the wraps off its first personal training product known quite simply as EA Sports Active.

EA are obviously hoping to enjoy some of the success that Nintendo has notched up since the launch of their popular Wii Fit game earlier in the year, and it is clear that they are taking note of Nintendo’s strategy to draw non-traditional gamers into the gaming realm.

EA Sports Active will be available across the US exclusively for the Wii in March 2009. Retailing at $60, the new fitness game is said to offer a more rigorous training opportunity than Wii Fit and hopes to target women as a cheaper alternative to attending gym.

Developed in collaboration with Bob Greene (none other than Oprah’s personal trainer), EA’s new fitness game will include over 20 sports for two players as well as various fitness tools such as a calorie counter, virtual personal trainer, 30-day weight loss program and players can even customize their workouts.

The game will not make use of the Wii Balance Board, instead players will make use of two specially designed leg straps that hold the Wii Remote and Nunchuck to track lower body movements. In addition the game will come bundled with a rubber resistance band to assist with strength training.
