How weird… this edition of Xbox LIVE’s ‘Deal of the Week’ concerns itself with special price offers on a variety of games that just so happen to contain insects and other creepy crawlies.
Coincidence? I think not.
For one week only, and available exclusively to Xbox LIVE Gold members, the following Xbox LIVE Arcade games are being offered at reduced prices:
Remakes. Man, what a can of worms! Personally I am not very fond of remakes. You always have some fond memories of a particular song, and then you hear a new rendition of the song by some rapper with a lisp and the whole song is ruined, forever. Movies are seldom as good as the originals, and games work pretty much the same way. But there is a type of “remake” that is different: remastered games. Remastered games are the exact same game, but with prettier graphics, a few new sound clips and maybe, just maybe an extra level or two.
Earthworm Jim is one of those remastered classics. It was released years ago and it deserves a comeback. Too bad they opted for the remastered game and not a fully fledged sequel. See the game still plays exactly the same after 15 odd years. I know this because Earthworm Jim used to cause many sleepless nights and I am still blaming my current hairline on the frustration this game has caused me. And nothing has changed.

Earthworm Jim falls slap bang in the middle of the 16-bit era, an era seemingly inundated with platformers starring mascots. It was the time before first-person shooters – can modern gamers even imagine this? In fact, Jim came out the same year as Doom II, System Shock and Heretic, the beginning of what has become the biggest genre in gaming. And so the colourful, idiosyncratic platformers starring diverse characters like Earthworm Jim, Donkey Kong and Sonic gave way to serious-business first person shooters starring unnamed bald space marines. Even id was once making colourful platformers starring Commander Keen before Wolf 3D, and Epic Games made Jazz Jackrabbit before Unreal and Gears of War. While that meant we got to experience multiplayer deathmatch in all its intensity, some of the character and variety of the mascot-driven 2D platformer was lost.

Gameloft’s high definition remake of Earthworm Jim, the classic mid-nineties action platformer, will be available on Xbox LIVE Arcade tomorrow for 800 MS Points.
Earthworm Jim HD will feature all the original levels with an “HD facelift” plus “wild gameplay” and a “remastered cult soundtrack.” There will also be new enemies and three exclusive levels in a never-before-seen location to keep those who played the game on home consoles such as the Mega Drive/Genesis and Super NES busy.
Gameloft has revealed a release date for the high definition remake of Earthworm Jim, the classic mid-nineties platformer originally put together by industry veteran Dave Perry and his team at Shiny.
According to Urban Dictionary:
Waja: The word for when you watch someone embarrass themselves so thoroughly that you also become embarrassed for no apparent reason.
Usage of Waja: “Did you see that guy try to be funny? That was some major waja…”
Other than an extended clip showing off what looks to be a well done remake of the original Earthworm Jim action platformer with full high definition art, this trailer for Earthworm Jim HD is filled with the joys and delight of first-class, grade-A waja.
