The Nintendo DS continues to sell well the world over, bolstered by the release of some fantastic games like Dragon Quest IX, Picross 3D, Mario & Luigi: Bowser’s Inside Story and many more!
This year we also saw the DSi XL being added to the popular family of handhelds, a console that features a 93 percent bigger touch screen and a bigger play screen, a wider viewing angle, and a larger pen-like stylus, culminating in what is quite possibly the ultimate version of Nintendo’s DS. It’s definitely true that once you try the DSi XL, regular DS consoles simply won’t do - just ask El33tonline’s Editor In Chief!
However, if you haven’t joined the handheld gaming world yet, then you might want to take a look at a few new ways to enjoy this super-sized method of portable gaming, including the New Super Mario DSi XL Special Edition Pack and new colour options for the DSi XL.

Nintendo Japan has announced that both the DSi and DSi LL (known as the XL everywhere else) will receive significant price drops in the region, as both handheld consoles will see over $25 removed from their usual prices.
Additionally, a brand new range of colour options have been revealed for the DSi LL, and the console will soon be available in Blue, Yellow and Green on June 19th (… in Japan at least).
In an act of kindness and generosity, Core Gaming (which represents Nintendo in South Africa) has donated six Nintendo DS Lite handheld consoles, as well as accompanying copies of Professor Layton and the Curious Village, to the haematology ward of South Africa’s Groote Schuur Hospital in an effort to help chemotherapy patients there pass the time with some interactive entertainment.
Patients in the ward undergoing chemotherapy and receiving bone marrow transplants spend an average of six weeks in an isolation room to prevent infection, with little to do to pass the time other than watch television.
In addition, these patients are usually from out of town, which means that visits from friends and family during the six week isolation period can be infrequent, and as a result of this isolation and lack of mental stimulation, patients can rapidly find themselves becoming depressed.
During Nintendo’s media summit in San Francisco yesterday, the publisher confirmed that their larder, more feature-rich handheld, the DSi XL, will be releasing in North America at the end of March for the price of $189.99, complete with pre-installed software.
According to data posted by Japanese game magazine Famitsu, Nintendo’s DS was (by far) the best selling console in Japan over 2009, racking up sales of just over 4 million units, contributing to lifetime sales of 29 million units for the console in the region.
The second-best selling console in Japan last year was the PSP, followed by the Wii, PS3 and Xbox 360.
Full sales figures for each console follow below:
So, the rumours were true after all, despite Nintendo’s reluctance to add any credence…
At a press event in Tokyo, Nintendo recently announced the existence of a new DSi, the DSi LL, which features a bigger screen (measuring in at 4.2 inches), priced at ¥20,000 ($220) and slapped with a release date of November 21st in Japan.
Nintendo has apparently been bombarded with requests by previous DS and DSi customers for a larger screen, to which the Japanese games giant has responded with a screen size that is roughly 93 percent larger than that of the DS Lite.
The DSi LL will come standard with two touch pens (one short and one long) and three pre-installed DSiWare games comprising two brain training games concerning humanities and sciences, and DS Easy Dictionary.
The new handheld will be available in three different colours, namely Dark Brown, Wine Red and Natural White.
The iMP 13 in 1 Travel Kit is a great solution for DS Lite owners who are in dire need of a carry case that can hold, not only your DS Lite, but other bits and pieces in the accessory range.
The case itself is a stylish, understated black ‘plastic leather’ zip case, that fits the DS Lite very snugly indeed, with no chance of sliding around once it’s zipped up.
The case feels so solid, in fact, that it seems as though you would be able to drop it without damaging the valuable console within (El33tonline does not recommend dropping your DS under any circumstances).
