It’s been a while since I had as much fun with a sandbox-style game as I did with Driver: San Francisco. This title is a brilliant return to form for the long-running series that debuted in 1999. Driver is this time a more focused and intelligent game than the last couple of entries in the franchise, and its lengthy development cycle (around five years) paid off with regards to the wealth of worthwhile and exciting content it makes available to players.

If you’re one of those people who shake their head in disapproval when there’s any mention of the ‘online pass’ system then you’ll be pleased to know that Driver: San Francisco is now effectively free from its shackles.

Deus Ex: Human Revolution Box Art Despite a whopping 46% drop in sales compared to the week previous, Deus Ex: Human Revolution has once again claimed the top spot on Chart Track’s UK Software Sales listing, ahead of the newly released Driver: San Francisco.

Ubisoft’s Driver, however, had enough success to land it in No. 2 on the chart - as 53% of the game’s sales were seen on Xbox 360, while 46% were recorded on PS3 - effectively pushing the previous sales monster Zumba Fitness down by one place to No. 3, as that title’s sales dropped by 19% from the previous week.

Sales of Rugby World Cup also fell, this time by 30%, forcing the game down to No. 4 from No. 3, while LEGO Pirates of the Caribbean (sales down 16%) stepped down one place to No. 5.

Driver: San Francisco - Prize Image Driver: San Francisco is now available in most European territories, and will soon launch in the US, too. Unfortunately, those of us in South Africa will have to wait a little while longer to get our hands on the game’s action racing and unique ‘Shift’ ability.

To try and help make up for the small delay, El33tonline and Megarom are giving away a massive, whopping Driver: San Francisco hamper which includes all kinds of awesome goodies, as well as a PlayStation 3 version of the game.

For a chance to win the game and goodies (which include a soundtrack on LP, a poster, a t-shirt and more!), make your way over to El33tonline’s Driver: San Francisco Competition page, and spy all of the ways you can enter!

Move along now - the competition ends this weekend, during the last dying breaths of September 4th, so get your entries in soon!

Ubisoft and Reflections Studios’ Driver: San Francisco is due for release in all EMEA (Europe, Middle East and Africa) regions today and tomorrow, finally bringing the publisher and developer pair’s latest vision for the much-loved Driver franchise to the world.

South Africa, however, will be left out of the high-speed racing and ‘shifting’ fun.

According to Ubisoft South Africa’s Rene Fraser, incoming stock of Driver: San Francisco to the country has been delayed. Here’s the full statement:

When I was tasked with writing a preview for Driver: San Francisco, I jumped at the chance. You see, not only do I happen to be a USA fanatic (well, certain cities within USA, to be precise) but I am also currently the only qualified San Francisco driver on the El33tonline team, so I’ll try to provide my opinion on how the game is looking in terms of reproducing a true San Fran experience, and get my nostalgia-junkie fix at the same time!

Ubisoft LogoEarlier this month it was revealed that Ubisoft would be introducing its own ‘online pass’ programme, Uplay Passport, to encourage consumers to buy new copies of the publisher’s games at retail, as opposed to second-hand, in order for you to benefit from additional online features, as well as multiplayer.

Beginning with Driver: San Francisco in August/September, Ubisoft will be including a Uplay Passport code in every copy of its games to give you free access to online functionality. If you don’t have a code because you bought it second-hand you’ll need to buy a Uplay Passport code in addition to whatever you paid for your used copy.
