It has been announced that Square Enix will delay the release of the DS-bound Dragon Quest IX, a delay that may affect the release date of their highly, highly anticipated RPG, Final Fantasy XIII.

Square Enix LogoIn an investor call, Square Enix stated that, due to underperformance in some of their divisions, a major game release would be pushed back from March in Japan, until July 11th. That game has been revealed to be Dragon Quest IX for the DS.

While that news is bad enough, it was also revealed that this delay may negatively affect the release of Final Fantasy XIII. Square Enix president Yoichi Wada commented:

“There is a possibility that Dragon Quest IX delay could [affect] Final Fantasy XIII. The next term’s schedule has [not] been fixed yet. Presently, I cannot say what kind of effect we will experience from moving the Dragon Quest IX launch from March to July. I cannot say there won’t be an effect.”

A delay in Japan means a delay around the world. Here’s hoping the effects won’t be too disastrous.
