Let’s forget about Mass Effect 3 and its endings for a little bit and talk about BioWare’s other major and current RPG franchise, Dragon Age.
What’s up with that, then?
While fans would desperately like to know what’s next for the fantasy-based action role-playing series, it seems as though developer BioWare is just as keen to find out what the future has in store for its universe of magic and monsters. And dragons.
A new downloadable content pack for Dragon Age 2 is now available. The Mark of the Assassin DLC pack includes new characters, environments and enemies – it’s available on Xbox LIVE for 800 Microsoft Points, PlayStation Network for £7.99 and PC for 800 BioWare Points.
It’s been another incredibly busy week here at El33tonline, not only because of a good, constant stream of videogame news, a few new reviews, an in-depth preview, and a host of competitions, but we also announced our attendance at rAge this year!
That’s right! We’ll be at booth 28 of rAge 2011 in Johannesburg, taking place at the Coca-Cola Dome from September 30th through October 2nd - if you’re in the area, be sure to stop by to take part in a few activities, giveaways and competitions, but if you won’t be there, we’ve got you covered.
All of this excitement and content tends to wear a person out, you know? So the team at El33tonline will be relaxing in the only way we know how - by playing games! Find out what members of the team will be busy with this weekend, and be sure to let us know what you’re playing, too:
On account of EA’s recent ‘Summer Showcase’ event, we’ve managed to gather details on the next downloadable content (DLC) for Dragon Age 2.
Bioware recently revealed that the developer’s latest epic action RPG, Dragon Age II, has past the magic ‘one million units sold’ mark and as a result the company is holding a massive celebration by giving away free copies of Mass Effect 2 PC to owners of Dragon Age II!
The latest and greatest epic RPG from EA and Bioware, Dragon Age 2, released very recently to massive acclaim from all corners of the gaming world – even those that aren’t particularly fond of role-playing games!
Of course the creation of an intriguing, in-depth story was key for Bioware, but that didn’t stop the legendary developer from including an upgraded combat system to put gameplay focus squarely on the action while including all of the classic RPG elements you would care to tinker with!
As part of El33tonline’s recent ‘festival of competitions,’ we gave you a chance to win a PC or Xbox 360 version of Dragon Age 2 for you to experience the world of Kirkwall and the legend of Hawke as you choose between a Rogue, Mage or Warrior class to suit your own play style.
Did you win a copy of Dragon Age 2 to delve deeper into the rich history of Dragon Age?
We waited almost a year-and-a-half for Bioware’s next epic fantasy-themed RPG, Dragon Age 2, to launch, giving RPG fans the world over the chance to re-enter the ancient, rich and incredible world of Dragon Age.
The El33tonline team had been eagerly awaiting its arrival you see, because both Oltman and Tom are big fans of the series. The only thing left to see was just how mighty this RPG adventure would be, and how the PC and Xbox 360 versions would compare against one another.
Bioware is renowned for deep and immersive RPGs, none more so than the classic Baldur’s Gate series. When Dragon Age was touted as the spiritual successor to the Baldur’s gate series, a lot of geeky dungeons and dragons gamers were extremely excited, myself included. Dragon Age on PC proved to be a great game, with hours and hours of role-playing keeping you entertained. The game did well on consoles, but the PC crowd was certainly the favoured ones with better graphics, better controls and a more traditional RPG. When the sequel was announced the geeks rejoiced, expecting more of the same, yet with the trademarked Bioware upgrades and improvements. Pity that the game actually took a step backwards in a lot of areas, clearly aiming for the action RPG / console crowd this time around. Is the game still worth your while? Does a dragon poop in the woods?

Dragon Age II is a game best enjoyed when you leave all your preconceptions about what makes a good RPG behind. It’s short for a BioWare RPG (15 to 20 hours) and only features one sprawling city. There’s no clear villain until the very end, and all your party members sign up within the first few hours of the game. There’s also a distinct lack of new environments after your initial 5 hours of playtime. Despite these shortcomings, Dragon Age II is a worthwhile adventure with excellent presentation, solid gameplay and some of the best writing and character interaction you’ll find in a videogame. The game’s branching narrative is also laudable and provides plenty of opportunity for multiple playthroughs. To Dragon Age veterans this title feels like a worthy chapter in the series rather than a full-blown sequel, while newcomers will enjoy Mass Effect game mechanics fashioned around an enjoyable fantasy experience.

To mark the occasion a launch trailer for Dragon Age 2 has been released, and it is mighty! An epic world, an epic journey and epic battles… what more could an RPG fan ask for? (“Nothing else” is the answer, by the way.) Watch and be amazed:
Yesterday was a highlight on Dragon Age devotees’ calendars. The demo for Dragon Age 2 splashed down on Xbox 360 and PC, while PS3 fans only had their DA2 thirst quenched today. I finally got my hands on the PC sample this morning, as I had to leave it downloading overnight due to the Bioware servers (which crashed when the demo went live at 7pm) drip-feeding us at the dismal rate of 40kbps.
Weighing in at 1.9GB, this demo certainly packs a punch. Not only does it allow you to play through two, non-adjacent areas of the game (mirroring Mass Effect 2’s demo last year), but it allows you to try out three classes of either gender and really get to grips with the battle and character development systems. You could play this demo at least six times and probably discover something new during each playthrough, especially if you experiment with the many different dialogue options as your disposal.
