It was recently announced that Atlus is to shut down the North American servers for From Software’s Demon’s Souls at the end of May, removing many of the game’s unique online features in the region in the process.
Vice President of Sales and Marketing at Atlus, Tim Pivnicny himself described some of these features thus:
Demon’s Souls has one of the most active and passionate online communities on the PlayStation Network, yet publisher Atlus was originally intending to shut down the game’s servers as early as next month in order to save on operation and maintenance costs.
The good news for fans of Demon’s Souls ingenious online component is that Atlus has suddenly changed its tune and announced that it’ll keep the game’s servers running until 2012 at the very least.
This last week has been an exciting one for Demon’s Souls fans, as well as any Action RPG devotee who never got a chance to play this modern classic. Now that the series has shed its PS3 exclusivity, you’ve got no excuse to let Dark Souls fly under your radar this year.
Demon’s Souls is that rare game which gets developers the world over scrambling to emulate its genre-redefining features. This PS3 exclusive is a title which can join the elite club of other revolutionary games such as Grand Theft Auto III, Metroid Prime, Resident Evil 4 and Super Mario Galaxy. What makes Demon’s Souls so special is its compelling amalgamation of various RPG gameplay mechanics, superb controls and an inspired infusion of online components into the very heart of the game.

[Update] Added the debut trailer for Dark Souls below. [End of Update]
Following the full reveal of From Software’s next action RPG in Dark Souls (previously known as Project Dark), an extraordinary clutch of screenshots has emerged to allow us to all clap eyes on the game. It’s looking mighty!
At Tokyo Game Show 2010, From Software revealed the studio’s next title in the form of the codenamed ‘Project Dark,’ but thanks to a preview in the latest issue of Japanese game magazine Famitsu, we now know this game’s official title, as well as a number of juicy new details.
‘Dark Souls’ is the name of From Software’s currently-in-development game, and while fans of the company’s Demon’s Souls may have been hoping for some sort of connection or follow-up to that mighty title, Dark Souls won’t share any of the same story or world elements.
After last week’s successful podcast jaunt, this edition of the El33tonline podcast is filled to the brim with participants in the form of Lisa, Peter, Tom and Oliver, and we have a few good old ‘Charlie Chats’ about Sony’s announced NGP (Next Generation Portable aka the PSP’s successor), why we need to support Xbox LIVE in South Africa, why we’re ticked off about firmware updates and game patches, the official launch of the iPad in South Africa, and other miscellaneous T.R.E.A.T.S.
We follow all of that up with talk on the games we’ve been playing recently, which this week include Bulletstorm, Dead Space 2, LittleBigPlanet 2, Demon’s Souls, Crysis 2 and more! We certainly played some games!
You can download or listen to the latest edition of the El33tonline podcast over here, and be sure to let us know what you think, send us some mail to the provided address, and tune in again next week!
There comes a moment in every gamer’s life when we sit back with satisfaction as the credits roll and think to ourselves: “That’s got to be one of the best games I’ve ever played.”
Unfortunately, just like you eventually get hungry after digging in at an all-you-can-eat buffet, that sense of satisfaction fades with time and an appetite for more gaming goodness gradually takes shape in your belly. The one thing that can get your adrenaline pumping and intensify that hunger is the announcement of a sequel or addition to this game series you’ve irrevocably pledged yourself to.
Think about how ecstatic Call of Duty fans get when a new game in the series is announced - they know it’s coming (one a year without exception it would seem) but that inevitability doesn’t seem to dampen their enthusiasm one iota.
I recently experienced this ‘hunger’ after completing Demon’s Souls for the second time. Although I have encountered people online (a PSN friend from Singapore springs to mind) who get endless hours of entertainment from this title’s cooperative and Player VS Player (PvP) features, I found myself craving new worlds to explore and new behemoths to take down (with a little help from fellow demon hunters of course).

Sony has announced that it will be expanding its Greatest Hits library with seven new PS3 titles. The seven new Greatest Hits PS3 titles are available now at US and Canadian retailers for $29.99.
The new additions include MAG, Ratchet & Clank Future: A Crack in Time, MotorStorm: Pacific Rift, Demon’s Souls, Call of Duty: World at War, Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare and Tekken 6.

[Update] It looks like Project Dark will also see a release on Xbox 360. Details below. [End of Update]
From Software recently announced that it’s working on a “dark fantasy” PlayStation 3 game currently going by the name of Project Dark.
‘Currently,’ because that is hopefully just a codename for the final release. Project Dark may be one of the most generic names ever bestowed upon a videogame – especially a videogame from the creators of Demon’s Souls!
Following a quick round of rumours and speculation, Namco Bandai has saved everyone some misery by officially announcing that the publisher will be bringing From Software’s action RPG, Demon’s Souls, to European, Middle-Eastern, African and Asian Pacific territories at the end of June this year, exclusively for the PS3.
Demon’s Souls will be launched as an exclusive European limited edition retail pack, and will contain a soundtrack CD, a new artbook and a brand new strategy guide.
Japan got it in February 2009. The United States got it in October 2009. Europe and the rest of the world is yet to get it. What’s the it?
An amazing, crazy and hardcore action RPG by the name of Demon’s Souls for the PlayStation 3, developed by From Software and published by Sony (in Japan) and Atlus (in the US), that’s what.
Demon’s Souls is primarily a singleplayer hack and slash action adventure RPG set in a twisted world filled with strange, enormous beasts and peculiar sights, but the game also has an interesting multiplayer component, where online players are able to leave messages for one another (either to aid or to hinder).
These online players are also able to show up in one another’s game to fight each other to the death. Charming.
PS3 exclusive Demon’s Souls was first shown at the Tokyo Game Show last year to a bit of a lukewarm reception. The fantasy setting was all a bit ‘been there done that’ while the hack ‘n slash RPG combat wasn’t convincing.
This new trailer, however, is looking mighty and shows a mixture of pre-rendered cutscenes with in-game action, both combining together to give a truly epic feel.
The story goes that the king of the land of Boletaria has accidentally unleashed an ancient monster upon the lands. As the hero, you must save the land from this monster and the evils that have been awoken, in what sounds like a very open-ended adventure.
