I contend that Dead Space 2 is the culmination of decades of game development lessons and learning, benefiting from everything game developers have learned over the past thirty years, and all of the knowledge that these digital wizards have collected and stored in their overarching hive mind.

Dead Space 2 is presented in incredible style and you’re never once given the chance to think that what you’re experiencing is anything but the highest quality. Likewise, the third-person action of Dead Space 2 is tuned to expert degrees, ensuring you’re always comfortable with the challenging in-game scenarios and able to overcome these challenges with your own accumulated skill. The world is wonderfully realised, the story is delivered very well, and you’re kept engaged throughout. And there’s multiplayer!

But there’s something a little off about Dead Space 2. Despite all of the visual splendour, gripping action and extremely memorable events, there’s a blandness that I personally couldn’t shake while playing. The game has one note that it plays exceptionally well, and there are even a couple different, interesting notes included in the melody to mix it up… but considering the intense mood and atmosphere of this horror-themed action game, that melody can become all too familiar and oppressive.

EA and Visceral Games have finally slapped a release date on the first set of scheduled story-based downloadable content (DLC) for the horrific action adventure game Dead Space 2, and like the creatures in the game, it’s managed to sneak up on all of us.

Despite the release of Capcom’s mighty fighting game last week, Marvel VS Capcom 3, Activision and Treyarch were able to deftly shut down the Japanese publisher’s efforts at UK game industry domination as Call of Duty: Black Ops claimed another week at No. 1 on Chart Track’s UK Software Sales chart.

Ugh.

The terrible header aside, it’s good news for Atari and Test Drive Unlimited 2 this week as Eden Game’s highly ambitious open-world racing game has claimed No. 1 on Chart Track’s UK Software Sales listing for the past week, usurping previous crown holder Dead Space 2 in the process.

HeadphonesIn this podcycle built for two, Tom and Oliver discuss what makes an addictive open-world game, why Double Fine’s Stacking is so amazing, what we think about the cancellation of major Activision franchises (and the continuation of minor ones), while also chatting about newly announced games Skylanders: Spyro’s Adventure, The Darkness II and Call of Juarez: The Cartel.

We’re two members light this week, but the discussion is heavy! Can the podcycle take the weight?

Listen in to the latest El33tonline Podcast to find out! (Hint: Yes)

Dead Space 2 London Advert Image 1 EA and Visceral Games’ top-notch Dead Space 2 has managed to remain at No. 1 on Chart Track’s UK Software Sales listing for the second week in a row, joining a very elite class of games that have managed to accomplish this feat so far this year… despite a 47% drop in sales compared to the week previous.

Can this action horror game go three weeks in a row at the top?

Apart from Test Drive Unlimited 2 releasing this week, there won’t be much new competition for the top title on the chart, but FIFA 11 (sales up 28%) and Assassin’s Creed: Brotherhood (sales down 5%) are still looking dangerous at No. 2 and No. 3 respectively, both of which shifted up one spot since the previous listing was released.

If you haven’t heard by now, Dead Space 2 is a most intense third-person action adventure game created by EA and the original team over at Visceral. The game places you in the combat boots of Isaac Clarke, a veteran destroyer of zombie-aliens called Necromorphs, and over the course of the adventure you’ll have sliced and diced many ghastly nasties, solved awesome environmental puzzles, gone for zero-gravity jaunts in space, and faced-off against enormous, hideous beasts.

From first-hand experience, I can tell you it’s all fantastic, but those of you with weak hearts and/or bowels should secure a playing partner… just in case.

You of course have a chance to win Dead Space 2 with us, and you can find out how (it’s very easy) over on El33tonline’s Dead Space 2 competition page.

(Note: This sweepstakes competition is only open to South African residents.)
