This weekend, the inaugural BAFTA ‘Brits to Watch’ gala event and dinner took place at the Belasco Theatre in Los Angeles to honour 42 emerging talents in film, TV and videogames, each of whom was hand-picked by a panel of industry experts.
According to the event’s website, honourees were selected “based on extraordinary potential displayed in their craft. From on-screen performance, to cinematography and games development, the achievements of these individuals highlights the breadth and depth of creativity emerging from today’s British talent.”
Other than A-list Hollywood celebrities such as Tom Hanks, who else was present at the Brits to Watch event? Videogame legends, including Will Wright, Tim Schafer and John Romero.
Gameloft is currently working on a remake of the early nineties classic action platformer, Earthworm Jim, which saw a release on home consoles such as the Mega Drive/Genesis and Super NES in 1994. This much you knew.
A single comparison screenshot has now been released, however, to show the differences in graphical detail between the game’s original release in 1994, and the new remake here in 2009.
It’s been announced that a new entry to the historical Earthworm Jim series of platform games will be making its way onto downloadable game services Xbox LIVE Arcade, PlayStation Network and WiiWare, as well as mobile platforms, via the combined efforts of developers Gameloft and a licensing agreement with Interplay.
“The game, with its humorous and edgy style,” said senior vice president at Gameloft, Gonzague de Vallois, “is a great fit for today’s gamer who craves a fully immersive experience that is fun and easily accessible. We look forward to delivering a fantastic game.”
Game industry veteran, David Perry, has recently updated his personal blog with a post about his approach to cloud-based online gaming, or the ability to stream games to your computer screen (or TV) over an internet connection.
Earlier this year at the Game Developers Conference, a similar service, Onlive, was announced, which has since been hailed as a revolutionary solution (if it really works) to set-top box gaming, allowing gamers to choose from a vast number of games, and play them with an inexpensive routing device hooked up to your TV.
Dave Perry was a little frustrated over the Onlive revelation, as it surfaced that he, too, was working on such an online gaming solution, and that the plans he had put in place to announce the technology had been jeopardised, forcing him to speed up the announcement.
Former boss of Shiny Entertainment, developer of classic games such as Earthworm Jim and MDK, and currently behind the revitalisation of the Acclaim brand, Dave Perry is getting ready to launch a new videogame design book. From an email sent to members of Perry’s GameIndustryMap.com, Perry spoke about the book:
“Another thing, I’ve signed a book deal with Charles River, and FIVE YEARS LATER the book is nearly finished (thanks mostly to the help of my co-author Rusel DeMaria, the video game industry book writing legend). The book is NOT FOR PROFIT, it’s the largest video game design book ever made, and it contains a TON of brainstorming reference for game design ideas & stories to help inspire YOU to easily generate amazing new ideas.”
“I’ve tested it on IGDA members and it works great! Immediately after launch we will start Edition 2 and we will want you to come and contribute ideas (we want to remain the biggest design reference book ever made).”
Those interested can pre-order the book at Amazon or follow the launch at GameDesignBook.com. The book, Perry says, will be in print before the Game Developers Conference this year, which is taking place from March 23rd to March 27th in San Francisco.
