Speaking to Gamasutra, a member of Blue Omega (the team behind Damnation), Geoff Rowland, has officially confirmed that a ‘majority’ of the team has been laid off, although a few members remain, which runs counter to his own Twitter post in late June which stated the ‘entire’ team had been let go.
Nevertheless, there remains the hope that the developer might be able to rehire those that were let go if their recently completed iPhone game, Attack of the Dust Bunnies, performs well in the market. Rowland said:
It’s been revealed that all of the developers at Blue Omega, the team behind the recent third-person action shooter Damnation, have been laid off, following not only poor sales of the title, but a multitude of legal conflicts as well.
After two sub-contract developers (Point of View and Velvetelvis Studios) were hired to aid development on Damnation, Codemasters (who handled publishing duties) forcefully removed Blue Omega (the original developers) from the project via official documentation early this year – documentation that Blue Omega dismissed - while one of the sub-contractors, Point of View, would continue to work on the game.
Uh-oh. For a game that doesn’t have much great press, is this really the trailer they want to put out? While the movement and combat look solid enough and, graphically, its doing OK, the overall presentation is lacking. You get the feeling that reviews around the world have already been written…
Despite this, you should watch the trailer to see if it might be your cup of tea. Damnation features ‘vertical’ game play, allowing you to swing, jump and fight your way to great heights, as well as traverse huge environments, utilising ‘swift, flowing movement,’ no less.
Damnation releases on PC, Xbox 360 and PS3 later this year.
Captain Rourke is out for revenge after his fiancé is slain, so it’s up to you to use any means necessary to get to the enemy and avenge her death.
Damnation, “the shooter gone vertical,” promises to allow players to use special acrobatic abilities to find and create their own route through organic, streaming landscapes and environments, providing the opportunity to move and fight in all directions at any time, leading to some swift, flowing movement and combat.
Further features include ‘Spirit Vision’ - the ability to see through walls and track the movement of enemies - as well as co-operative and online multiplayer modes.
Damnation is due out later this year on PC, Xbox 360 and PS3 from Blue Omega and Codemasters.
