It’s been a very quick cycle of ‘announce and release’ for Crysis on PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360, and after only being revealed in early September, Crytek’s previously PC-exclusive first-person shooter is now available for consoles.
Earlier this month EA and Crytek announced that they would be bringing Crysis to Xbox Live and the PlayStation Network in October.
EA has since revealed that the exact release date for this award-winning first-person shooter will be October 4th (next week Tuesday). PSN users from PAL territories will have to wait an extra day for it to appear on the PlayStation Store due to it only being updated on a Wednesday.
The release of THQ and Kaos Studios’ Homefront earlier this year was met with a less than stellar critical response as gamers bemoaned the extraordinarily short and underwhelming singleplayer campaign, but paused to heap at least a little praise on the game’s multiplayer.
Despite encouraging sales numbers (especially for a brand new intellectual property competing in the cutthroat military shooter genre), Kaos Studios was shut down at THQ’s behest, leaving the future of the Homefront franchise in doubt.
EA and Crytek have today announced that the publisher and developer pair will be bringing their original collaborative effort, the first Crysis, to Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 as downloadable titles over Xbox LIVE and the PlayStation Network respectively.
Crytek (Far Cry, Crysis) has been working in secret on an Xbox 360-exclusive title for quite some time now, and the only hint of its existence that we’ve received was with a teaser trailer last year, and a name: Codename Kingdoms.
Today during Microsoft’s E3 2011 press conference, not only was the game’s official title revealed, but a new trailer was also released along with the news that it is to make extensive use of the Xbox 360’s Kinect.
Crysis 2 is impressive right from the get-go and throttles your attention from the very first cinematic, effortlessly setting the tone for the incredible action, events, set pieces and story to follow.
As you’re slowly introduced to the different characters of the game, the crumbling urban warfare environment of New York City, and the invading alien menace determined to wipe out mankind, you’re given bounteous opportunities to get to grips with the many powers and abilities afforded to you by the super powerful Nanosuit as you crush enemies, turn invisible to outwit your foes and zip around obstacles (living and inanimate) with super speed.
It’s these powers (as well as their upgrades and other abilities) that truly set Crysis 2 apart from any other first-person shooter available, providing you with a non-linear playground to approach missions in almost any way you wish, with all of the trimmings of spectacular visuals, audio and production values to elevate the experience well above similar offerings.

It’s been a long time coming for Crysis 2, but EA and Crytek will finally release the pair’s latest first-person shooter today in North America and around the rest of the world later this week.
To properly mark the occasion, EA has released a mighty Crysis 2 launch trailer featuring the song “New York, New York,” re-imagined by Grammy-nominated artist B.o.B. Explosions, gunfire, crumbling cities, aliens, mechanical walkers and absorbing visuals also feature in abundance – check it out:
While it’s great that we can get another look at Crysis 2 with a third ‘experience’ trailer included below (with tons of stunning in-game footage), it’s a little bit of a bittersweet time for fans of the game as the PlayStation 3 version of the Crysis 2 multiplayer demo has recently been taken down due to gamers “experiencing server connection delays.”
From a statement on EA’s Crysis 2 blog:
Crysis 2 features the opportunity to instantaneously transform yourself from an everyday Nanosuit-wearing soldier into an ultimate weapon – a ‘one many army’ if you will – with enhanced abilities like invisibility (as seen here) and increased strength.
But to truly make the battlefield your own while fending off an alien menace hell-bent on the annihilation of Earth, you’ll need to make use of your incredible speed to outpace your enemies… and to pull off awesome, explosive tricks as seen in this latest trailer for Crysis 2:

From playing the current multiplayer demo for Crysis 2 it’s clear that Crytek and Crytek UK have put an enormous amount of time and effort into this portion of the game, meaning that we won’t only get a rock solid singleplayer campaign, but a deep and excellent online competitive component, too.
EA and Crytek have release two videos in a series of ‘Multiplayer Progression’ trailers (watch them here and over here), and now the third part of the series is available to talk some more about how you’ll be able to rank yourself up in Crysis 2 multiplayer, become a more efficient in-game killing machine, and gain an advantage over your opponents in the process:
It was being reported that with Crysis 2, Crytek would buck EA’s new trend of including ‘Online Pass’ into the online multiplayer portions of the publisher’s games (requiring you to enter a provided code to unlock multiplayer, or pay $10 if you bought the game second-hand), but it’s now been confirmed that the upcoming first-person shooter extravaganza will indeed not make use of the system.
In the run-up to the release of Crysis 2 on March 22nd in North America and March 25th everywhere else, the team at Crytek has begun to release a series of ‘multiplayer progression’ videos to clue us in as to the inner workings of the first-person shooter’s competitive online component, and the second entry to this video series recently went live.
The first trailer featured a look at the Nanosuit and its range of upgrades and capabilities, while part two focuses on the range of weaponry available in the game, as well as an enormous amount of additions, unlocks and customisation options for this arsenal of death-dealers.
Naturally, there are huge doses of in-game action from Crysis 2 multiplayer in the video, too:
