So, you’re driving along in your fancy new sports car in and around some twisting suburban roads, simply enjoying the understated purr of the engine at your control… but you know the car isn’t satisfied with these rinky-dink winding roads. You need to find an open stretch of tarmac to let your machine flex its true muscle.

You head out onto the highway – it’s clear. Not another car in sight. You slowly start pushing the car up to speed, past fourth and fifth gear, now into sixth! Barriers, lampposts and trees are an absolute blur now as you careen past them at what may as well be the speed of light!

But what’s that up ahead? A glint? Movement?

Before you have time to react, a stealth black monster roars out in front of you, smashing you and your fancy new sports car into the barrier until you grind to a dead halt. Somehow, you’re OK, but you’re woozy and about to pass out. Before your eyes close down tight, you catch a glimpse of the beast that struck you down, and think to yourself:

“An Interceptor… I should have known.”

Available in 2009, Criterion has announced future downloadable content for Burnout Paradise that will feature some extraordinary vehicles, for some extraordinary racing options.

Burnout Paradise Car Pack 1

About a week ago, the first of the vehicle updates was announced, which includes a specially modified car, The Jansen 88 Special. Looks awesome already, but what’s so special about this car? It hovers. Apparently hitting L3 on your PS3 controller will retract the wheels from under the car to turn it into a hovercar. Crazy! As part of that pack, you’ll be able to pick up the Cavalry Bootlegger, Manhattan Spirit and the GT Nighthawk!

The other vehicle pack to become available next year is the Toy Cars Pack featuring, what else, toy cars! Screenshots of the hovercar and toy cars follows below:

Criterion, the developer of the Burnout series, have announced a new, special edition of their game, Burnout Paradise, entitled The Ultimate Box.

Burnout ParadiseThis new edition includes all of the free downloadable content players have had access to throughout the year following the game’s release, encompassing the Cagney and Bikes update, new features such as the race restart ability and the PlayStation 3-exclusive Burnout Paradise Network, as well as a new game mode, Burnout Paradise Party. What is this new mode? Glad you asked:

“Burnout Paradise Party brings the social fun of Burnout Paradise into an offline environment where up to eight friends can pass the pad to play competitively. There are dozens of quick-fire, turn-based challenges where players compete in different stunt, speed and skill events.”

If you already own Burnout Paradise, the Party mode will be available to buy separately as downloadable content. Burnout Paradise: The Ultimate Box is apparently due out in February next year. You can check out Criterion’s entry on the US PlayStation Blog for more info, as well as pictures of the staff taking turns to play the Party mode.
