New Xbox 360 - SmallUS sales tracking and research group NPD has revealed sales figures for the region’s videogame industry during the month of July 2010, and thanks to an incredible surge in Xbox 360 console sales, revenue for the month reached $846.5 million, which represents a decline of only 1% compared to the same month in 2009, when revenue reached $850.6 million.

Hardware sales then were led comfortably by the Xbox 360, ahead of perennial market leaders the Nintendo DS and Nintendo Wii – the first time Microsoft has managed such a feat since the release of Halo 3 in September of 2007.

On the software side, NCAA Football 11 from EA was the best-selling game for July, although interestingly enough, Blizzard Entertainment’s StarCraft II on the PC outsold EA’s title, but due to the nature of NPD’s reporting (i.e. not comparing PC and console software data), StarCraft II has to celebrate its victory alone.

It was inevitable. After twelve years of anticipation, and following the release of the original phenomenonal hit title, it had to happen.

Toy Story 3 Logo (Small) Disney Interactive Studios’ Toy Story 3 has managed to claim the No. 1 spot this week on Chart Track’s UK Software Sales chart, stepping up from No. 5 last week with a 78% surge in sales, in no small part due to the release of the movie.

New Xbox 360 - Small Microsoft UK must be smiling this week, as not only has the company’s Crackdown 2 managed to hold onto the top spot on Chart Track’s Software Sales listing for the second week in a row, but the new and improved Xbox 360 250 GB has pulled off the biggest launch for a ‘revised’ home console in the UK, outperforming both the PS2 Slim and the PS3 Slim during their respective launches.

Chart Track says that the new Xbox 360 recorded over two days of sales comparable to the launch of the original Xbox 360 in late 2005, which the sales tracking firm notes is quite a feat considering the original console launched in two flavours – the Pro and Core.

Nintendo’s Wii Party has debuted at number 1 on the Media Create Japanese Software Chart, selling an impressive 235 000 copies in its opening week. White Knight Chronicles: Awakening of Light and Darkness for the PS3 also makes a good debut, nipping at Wii Party’s heels to earn second place with 176 000 copies.

Microsoft’s Crackdown 2 has read the riot act and managed to calm the advances of other titles up Chart Track’s UK Software Sales chart this past week, claiming the No. 1 spot on the listing while no-one was looking.

This position represents Microsoft’s first No. 1 All Formats chart ranking for 2010, and betters the debut chart appearance of the original Crackdown by one place.

Crackdown 2 Box Art SmallWhen we were young(er), there may have been a time when we ventured out into the fresh, open air with our friends, running around with nary a care, playing all kinds of games outside, like ‘Tag,’ frantically trying to chase one another in an attempt to spread (and not become) ‘It,’ whatever that was.

But if this new gameplay video from Crackdown 2 is to be believed, this tried and tested game of Tag will be taken to the limit, as instead of spreading some nebulous, unknown entity, you’ll simply be required to tag enemies with an explosive rocket to the face (or body, as you choose), with even more frantic chases as a result.

Watch some rocket chases below in the Crackdown 2 Rocket Tag gameplay video below:
