EL33TONLINE: News tag archive: comparison

This is my favourite time following the release of the latest massive videogame – the graphics comparisons between different platforms, in most cases across Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3. Why? Because gamers go ballistic!

If one version of the game dares to look better on one platform over the other, however infinitesimally, the community goes wild as PS3 and Xbox 360 fans tout ‘their’ console’s superiority… or bemoan ‘their’ console’s shortcomings.

Performance issues on different platforms are another issue entirely…

We waited almost a year-and-a-half for Bioware’s next epic fantasy-themed RPG, Dragon Age 2, to launch, giving RPG fans the world over the chance to re-enter the ancient, rich and incredible world of Dragon Age.

The El33tonline team had been eagerly awaiting its arrival you see, because both Oltman and Tom are big fans of the series. The only thing left to see was just how mighty this RPG adventure would be, and how the PC and Xbox 360 versions would compare against one another.

Crysis 2 is available today in the UK, Europe and South Africa, and graphically this first-person shooter from Crytek is looking insanely good!

As with all marquee game releases sporting a multiplatform release and mighty fine visuals, however, we absolutely need to compare and contrast just how fine the title looks over these different platforms, and thanks to Gametrailers, we can find out how the PlayStation 3, Xbox 360 and PC versions of Crysis 2 appear side-by-side.

You can decide for yourself which version looks better in this Crysis 2 graphics comparison video:

Xbox 360 VS PlayStation 3

Let’s just make one thing clear before I even launch into this discussion: I play games on both the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 regularly and I’ve put them each through their paces as media players. Therefore, in this article, you will not have to endure a fanboy’s rant concerning one console’s profound superiority over the other. What I would like to offer instead is an unbiased opinion on what advantages each console holds over the other based on my personal experiences with each of them.

Both consoles are likely to be around for a few more years at least, and the recent release of Kinect and PlayStation Move will undoubtedly extend the lifespan of the Xbox 360 and PS3 beyond initial expectations held when the consoles first launched in 2005 and 2006 respectively. I have only had limited experience with Kinect and Move so I’ll leave their respective merits out of the equation in this discussion.

Gran Turismo 5 recently released around the world to an overwhelmingly positive response, and while some of you were a bit disappointed with a few aspects here and there, there’s no question that Sony Computer Entertainment and Polyphony Digital’s PlayStation 3-exclusive racing simulator is a visual tour de force!

Gran Turismo 5 VS Forza Motorsport 3

But… I seem to recall another racing simulator game that released, was it last year? In October? And exclusively on Xbox 360? Oh yes, of course! Forza Motorsport 3!

Dang, that was a great game!

Last week, one of the few remaining blockbuster releases for 2010, Assassin’s Creed: Brotherhood, launched around the world for both the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3.

After spending an enormous amount of time working my way through the singleplayer campaign, and whiling away an hour or two in multiplayer, I can say it’s by far the very best entry to the franchise yet (look out for El33tonline’s review in the near future).

But, hark? I used the word ‘blockbuster’ just now, didn’t I? A blockbuster game release on the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3… there’s usually something that happens when such an event occurs…

Ah, of course! We need to compare the graphical fidelity of one console version of Brotherhood to that of the other console’s version! Luckily GameTrailers has done due diligence and put together a video that does just that!

Yes! Again!

One graphics comparison video is simply not enough, it seems, as GameTrailers has put together a new video to measure the visual fidelity of the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 versions of Call of Duty: Black Ops against one another.

Footage of the Wii version of Black Ops is thrown in there too, just for good measure.

Is this a truer representation of the different editions of Black Ops, readers? Watch below (Spoiler Alert!):

Yes!

Here on El33tonline, we like to have a little fun with comparison videos showcasing graphical differences (no matter how small) between PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 versions of brand new blockbuster videogame releases.

But not this time. This time it’s for real.

G4TV has put together a comparison video to destroy all other comparison videos, giving us an opportunity to scrutinize the Xbox 360 and PS3 versions of today’s mega-release, Call of Duty: Black Ops.

And so, here we are again.

Medal of Honor Banner Image

Arguably October’s biggest videogame release, and one of the biggest releases to emerge from the house of Electronic Arts this year, and lo and behold, comparisons are being made between the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 versions of Medal of Honor.

Will wonders never cease?

Is it just my tired old eyes, or are the two versions of Medal of Honor looking basically identical? Aliasing looks the same. Effects look the same. Texture detail looks the same…

Maybe you can help me out and try to spot the differences between the PS3 and Xbox 360 versions of Medal of Honor in a new comparison video below:

One of the biggest releases of last week (in Europe and the UK) and this week (in the US) was Capcom’s Dead Rising 2, a harrowing zombie destruction simulator that puts you in the shoes of Chuck Greene, a fellow who is currently tasked with surviving the hostile advances of tens of thousands of zombies in a gambling paradise.

Luckily, Greene has a few… ‘tools’ at his disposal to take care of the zombie menace. ‘Tools’ like a hand-crafted, double-sided chainsaw pole, plus hundreds more.

Dead Rising 2 released on both Xbox 360 and PS3 (and will be releasing on PC shortly), and wouldn’t you know it, as with all big multi-platform game releases, we need to get the lowdown on which console spits the game out onto our screens better and faster than the other.

As is customary after an enormous blockbuster videogame release, we absolutely have to compare the game’s visuals over at least two different competing platforms, and with the launch of last week’s Red Dead Redemption on PS3 and Xbox 360, now seems like the perfect time to see which console provides the better graphics fidelity.

What say you?

Red Dead Redemption Screenshot 4

In one corner, we have the PlayStation 3 version of Red Dead Redemption, with all of its Blu-rays and its Cell processors and whatnot, and in the other corner, we have the Xbox 360 with all of its… stuff.

Let’s rumble!

Lost Planet 2 releases around the world today, and as with any massive videogame release, you absolutely need an accompanying comparison video to try and spot the graphical differences between the versions of the game across different platforms, in this case, the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360.

It’s a tradition.

Lost Planet 2 Logo

In most cases, the visual variations between consoles don’t amount to much, but after watching this comparison video for Lost Planet 2, it seems this may not be the case this time…

I’m not even going to say it. I’m not even going to try to engage you in ‘witty’ banter, and point out that, once again, we’re trying to compare the graphical fidelity of a single game across multiple platforms, and suss out which of the consoles is ‘superior’ based on such skin-deep perceptions.

Oh, I guess I just did…

Watch the Final Fantasy XIII graphics comparison video below, where you’ll be able to see the Xbox 360 and PS3 versions of the game going head-to-head in selected scenes, and try to spot the differences between the two. Get out your microscopes:

The hell-bound action adventure game Dante’s Inferno is now officially available around the world, and what better way to celebrate with one of those console comparison videos that everyone apparently hates so much.

C’mon, you love them, really.

This time, the comparison video takes a look at the differences between the PS3 and Xbox 360 versions of Dante’s Inferno. Which console comes out on top graphically? I’ve given up trying to look for differences, so you can make up your own mind below (Warning - minor nudity ahoy):

Having already launched in North America on Tuesday, and releasing today in Europe, Bayonetta has been a part of gamer’s conversations for quite some time since its initial reveal towards the end of 2008, the release of the demo, and the game’s release in Japan last year in October.

From the looks of the released screenshots and trailers, Bayonetta looks an absolute riot, with the stylish melee and gunplay-based combat found in Devil May Cry, only taken to a completely different level of insanity, speed and raw ‘cool.’

To celebrate Bayonetta’s release in the West, SEGA and Platinum Games have released a launch trailer that simply cements prior conceptions surrounding the game, and also hints at some story elements. Watch below:

Also bubbling to the surface is a console comparison video for Bayonetta, contrasting in-game footage from the PS3 version of the game with that of the Xbox 360 version. Which version comes out on top, visually? Watch below to make up your mind:
